The verdict: recorder first or editor first

Pick Riverside if recording is the hard part of your show: guests in different places, a clean separate track for each person, and live streaming from the same studio. Pick Descript if editing is the hard part and your team is one to three people working on a transcript. The headline prices match to the dollar, and that misleads. Riverside bills per account, Descript bills per person, so $24 a month billed annually buys one Riverside Pro workspace or one Descript Creator seat [1]. The gap opens with your second collaborator.

Neither tool wins on features outright, because each is strong where the other is thin. Riverside's rebuilt studio records up to 100 participants per session, keeps each on its own track and streams from Grow upward, but its editor always exports at 24 FPS and 44.1 kHz. Descript has no live streaming and no mobile editing app, yet it offers education and nonprofit pricing, which Riverside does not. Streamers and mobile-first hosts should skip Descript. Schools and nonprofits should price Descript first.

The ratings block above shows Riverside's own review-platform scores only, so it is not a head-to-head with Descript. Those scores measure how satisfied people are with the product they chose, not which product fits your workflow. A host who records weekly remote interviews and a solo creator who cuts tutorials can both rate their own tool highly and still be unhappy with the other one. Read them as a check on reliability and support. Then settle the recording-versus-editing question above, because that is where the two products really split.

⚠️
Watch out
Editor seats are not extra hosts

A Riverside editor seat only handles and edits recordings, and the account's separate-track hours stay shared across everyone.

Same digits, different bill

Riverside sells four self-serve plans per account. Free costs $0, Pro costs $35 a month billed monthly or $24 a month billed annually, Grow costs $45 a month billed monthly or $34 a month billed annually, and Webinar costs $99 a month billed monthly or $79 a month billed annually. Business is a custom quote with no trial. Pro is one user. Anyone else who edits on Pro, Grow or Webinar needs the Editor seat add-on at $19 a month or $168 a year, one editor per seat, not available during a trial, while Business adds editors at no extra cost.

Descript prices every seat. Hobbyist costs $16 a month billed annually or $24 a month billed monthly for one seat, and Creator costs $24 a month billed annually or $35 a month billed monthly per person, for up to three seats [2]. Business costs $50 a month billed annually or $65 a month billed monthly per person, for up to five seats, and Enterprise is quoted. Descript Free costs $0. Education and nonprofit buyers pay $8 a month billed annually or $12 a month billed monthly per person, a discount category Riverside does not offer at all.

For one person on annual billing, Riverside Pro and Descript Creator both come to $288 a year, by our arithmetic. With a second person, Riverside Pro plus one editor seat costs $456 a year against $576 for two Descript Creator seats. With a third, Riverside Pro plus two editor seats costs $624 a year against $864 for three Descript Creator seats. On monthly billing the same teams pay $54 against $70 a month, then $73 against $105. Two caveats apply. A Riverside editor seat only handles and edits recordings, and the account's track hours stay shared.

Billing rules differ too. Riverside's 14-day trial on Pro, Grow or Webinar needs a card and charges the full price on day 15 unless you cancel. Its published refund policy covers Pro and Grow only: within 24 hours on monthly plans or 14 days on yearly ones; our Riverside pricing guide covers the rest. Descript refunds within 48 hours, or 7 days for added seats. Both windows are short. Decide during Riverside's 14-day trial or on Descript's Free plan, before paying.

Toolkit tip
Price the second person first

At $24 a month billed annually, Riverside Pro and Descript Creator match for one person, though a solo editor can pick Descript Hobbyist at $16 a month billed annually. The difference appears once a collaborator needs access, because Riverside adds an editor seat while Descript adds a full per-person seat.

Recording: local tracks against Rooms

Riverside records every participant locally on their own device, with audio and video as separate tracks, up to 4K video and 48 kHz WAV audio from Pro upward, and uploads progressively during the session so a dropped connection does not damage the high-quality files. Guests join from a link with no account and no install, in Chrome, Edge, Safari 18.2 or later, the Mac app or the iOS and Android apps. The Free plan records at 720p. Sessions end automatically after six hours while someone is in the studio.

The catch sits in downloads, not recording. Recording is unlimited on every plan, but downloading separate tracks is capped at 15 hours a month on Pro, 20 on Grow and 25 on Webinar, with Business unlimited [3]. Hours reset monthly with no rollover. They count session length rather than headcount, and live streams count toward them. Over the cap you can still record, edit and export edited videos, but individual-track downloads stop until the next cycle or an upgrade.

Descript records remote sessions in Rooms, with up to 10 participants and local recording up to 4K. Each Rooms session runs four hours at most. 4K recording is not available on Windows yet, and Rooms does not run on mobile. Rooms recording hours range from 2 to 25 a month per Drive depending on the plan, Rooms sessions also use media minutes, and those minutes reset monthly with no rollover. For asynchronous recording, Descript limits its links to Enterprise, while Riverside offers async sessions on some Business plans through its customer success manager. Panels larger than ten belong on Riverside.

Editing and AI: credits run in opposite directions

Both products edit video by editing the transcript. Riverside pairs a text-based editor with a timeline, both rebuilt for Riverside 2.0 on 30 June 2026, and adds Co-Creator, a chat agent that cuts clips, trims recordings, writes posts and adds captions. Magic Clips, Magic Audio and Co-Creator use no AI credits, though Magic Clips are limited to three sets per recording on Pro, Grow and Webinar. Transcript downloads need Pro or higher. Riverside says its transcription is 99% accurate in more than 100 languages, with one language per recording.

Descript builds on the same transcript-first idea, with its Underlord AI tools inside a desktop app and a browser editor. On its paid plans, AI credits and media minutes refill each month and do not roll over, so an unused allowance simply expires; Descript Free gets 100 AI credits once. Riverside works the other way. Its paid plans include a starting balance of AI credits that does not renew monthly, and extra packs are one-time purchases, from 100 credits for $2 up to 20,000 for $400. Credits are never refunded or carried forward.

What burns those Riverside credits is specific. AI Translation costs 100 credits a minute across 30 languages, for videos up to 60 minutes with up to four speakers, which works out to about $2 a minute at pack prices. AI Twin costs 200 credits a minute of video, and a voice clone costs 200 credits per hour of audio. If you finish in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, note that Riverside's timeline export (XML or AAF) is Business only. On Pro, Grow and Webinar you download the separate tracks or the exported edit and rebuild the timeline yourself. Descript includes timeline export from Creator upward.

Download tracks before the reset

Riverside's separate-track hours reset monthly with no rollover, and live streams count toward them. Pull the tracks you need before the cycle ends.

Streaming, webinars, mobile and security

Live production is the clearest divide. Riverside streams from Grow upward to unlimited destinations, including YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitch and custom RTMP, at up to 1080p and for up to eight hours per stream, with a small Riverside logo unless you hide it. The Webinar plan adds registration, Q&A, polls and recurring events for up to 100 registrants; 10,000 registrants requires Business. An audience link for up to 100 viewers works on every plan. Descript offers no live streaming. If you stream, the choice is made.

Mobile follows the same pattern. Riverside has iOS and Android apps with basic editing, and Mobile Plus is a separate app-store subscription at $9.99 a month. Descript has no mobile editing app. Riverside cannot record on Linux, ChromeOS, Firefox or mobile browsers, so check your guests' setups. On security, Riverside holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001, and Descript holds SOC 2 Type II. Both cover the basic audit question a buyer will ask. Neither makes a HIPAA claim, and Descript's Terms prohibit protected health information in user content, so regulated health teams should ask Riverside's sales team directly before recording patient conversations.

⚠️
Watch out
Riverside trials charge on day 15

The 14-day trial on Pro, Grow or Webinar needs a card and bills the full price automatically on day 15 unless you cancel. Business has no trial.

Frequently asked questions

Go to Settings, then Plan & Billing, then Cancel plan; access runs to the end of the paid period. The Terms ask for notice 30 days before renewal, so cancel well ahead.

Does Riverside train AI on my recordings?+

Its Privacy Policy and Terms let Riverside use recordings, transcripts and AI prompts to train its own models. Only Business customers can opt out, by written agreement.

Can guests record from any browser on Riverside?+

No. Recording works in Chrome, Edge, Safari 18.2 or later and the apps, but not on Linux, ChromeOS, Firefox or mobile browsers.

The bottom line

Choose Riverside when the recording itself carries the risk: remote guests, separate tracks, panels above ten people, live streams or webinars, and a team that works in one account through editor seats. With editor seats added, it costs less than Descript Creator for two or three people, by the arithmetic above, as long as 15 to 25 hours of track downloads a month cover your output. Choose Descript when one to three people spend their time editing, your recordings fit in four-hour Rooms sessions, and you want a monthly credit allowance or an education or nonprofit price.
