Riverside is worth paying for when your show, interview series or webinar depends on clean, separate audio and video tracks from remote guests. It records every participant locally on their own device and uploads during the session, so a shaky connection does not ruin the high-quality files. Prices are per account: Pro costs $35 a month billed monthly or $24 a month billed annually ($288 a year), for one user [1]. The number to plan around is not the price. It is the 15 hours a month of separate-track downloads on Pro. Anyone who wants to live-stream needs Grow or higher.

A recording studio first, a content suite second

Riverside started in 2020 as a remote recording studio, and the recorder is still its strongest part. Riverside 2.0, announced on 30 June 2026, rebuilt the studio and the AI editor and added in-person multicam in the Mac app, newsletters, social scheduling and motion graphics. Around the recorder now sit a text-based and timeline editor, an AI layer, live streaming, webinars, podcast hosting, a website and an MCP server. The breadth is real, but it is metered by hours, credits and plan gates. That shapes every buying decision.

Buyers who need a reliable remote recorder will find it excellent. Buyers hoping one subscription replaces a separate editor, a streaming tool and a webinar platform should read the gates before the feature list. The pricing unit also trips people up. Riverside bills per account. Descript bills its Creator plan per person, at $24 a month billed annually or $35 a month billed monthly. Same digits, different unit. A Riverside Pro account is for one person: sharing a login breaks the Terms, and each collaborator on Pro, Grow or Webinar needs an Editor seat add-on. Our Riverside alternatives guide lines up the rivals on the same basis.

The 2026 Privacy Policy and Terms let Riverside train its own AI models on recordings and transcripts; only Business customers can opt out, by written agreement.

What local recording actually gets you

Guests join from a link with no account and no install, using Chrome, Edge, Safari 18.2 or later, the Mac app, or the iOS and Android apps. Each participant is captured on their own device as separate audio and video tracks, up to 4K video and 48 kHz WAV audio on paid plans, and uploaded progressively while you talk. The rebuilt studio records up to 100 participants per session, each on an individual track, with up to 9 shown on screen. Screen shares land on their own track on every plan. Producers can run the show without being recorded, although internal producers start at Grow and invited producers are Business only.

The quality ladder is short. Free records at 720p and 44.1 kHz; 1080p, 4K and 48 kHz start at Pro, camera permitting. Editor exports, however, are always 24 FPS and 44.1 kHz, whatever you recorded, with EBU R128 loudness applied to every export. If a local track fails, a cloud backup exists, but it tops out at 720p and is kept for three months. Recordings end automatically after six hours with someone in the studio, and Riverside recommends staying under four.

The gaps are about platforms. Riverside cannot record on Linux, ChromeOS, Firefox, Brave or mobile browsers, and the mobile app has no offline recording. Desktop sessions cannot be recorded in 9:16 portrait; only the phone apps can. The Mac app needs Apple Silicon and macOS 15, but it is also where in-person multicam lives, with up to eight cameras and mics on one Mac. Check every regular guest's browser before the first booking. Most surprises start there.

Set the transcript language first

Each recording uses one studio language for its transcript, so set it before you press record.

Plans, prices and the hours cap

Plan Price Separate-track downloads Live streaming Webinars
Free $0, no card One-off 2 hours No No
Pro $35 a month billed monthly, or $24 a month billed annually 15 hours a month No No
Grow $45 a month billed monthly, or $34 a month billed annually 20 hours a month Up to 1080p No
Webinar $99 a month billed monthly, or $79 a month billed annually 25 hours a month Up to 1080p Up to 100 registrants
Business Custom quote, no trial Unlimited Up to 1080p Up to 10,000 registrants

Recording itself is unlimited on every plan. What runs out is the right to download individual tracks [2]. The hours reset monthly with no rollover, count session length rather than headcount, and include live streams. Deleting a recording gives nothing back. Over the cap you can still record, edit and export edited cuts, but separate tracks stay locked until the next cycle or an upgrade. A weekly 90-minute interview uses 6 to 7.5 hours a month, well inside the entry tier. A one-hour stream every weekday is another matter: 20 to 23 hours a month, by our arithmetic, which already fills Grow before a single recorded episode.

By our arithmetic, annual billing saves $132 a year on Pro, $132 on Grow and $240 on Webinar, or 31%, 24% and 20%, but only if you stay. On the entry tier, eight months billed monthly cost $280, under the $288 annual price, while nine months cost $315. On the two higher tiers the break-even falls after nine months: nine months billed monthly cost $405 and $891, against $408 and $948 for a year. Small teams pay for seats on top. Pro plus one Editor seat comes to $54 a month billed monthly or $456 a year, again by our arithmetic; the seat alone is $19 a month or $168 a year and cannot be bought during a trial. Business adds editors at no extra cost.

The 14-day trial on Pro, Grow and Webinar needs a card and charges the full price on day 15 unless you cancel. The published refund policy covers only Pro and Grow: a monthly plan cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, or a yearly one within 14 days, gets a full refund on request, and other fees are non-refundable [3]; our Riverside pricing guide covers billing, refunds and cancellation in full.

The editor and the AI layer, with their meters

The editor works two ways at once: you cut by editing the transcript, or you work on a timeline where tracks split and move freely and speaker tiles sit anywhere on the canvas. Transcripts are automatic in more than 100 languages, which Riverside says reach 99% accuracy, but each recording uses one studio language that you set before recording. Downloading a transcript or SRT file needs Pro. Cleanup tools such as remove pauses, filler-word removal and Smart Mute are on every plan, while blur and custom backgrounds, the brand kit and show notes start at Pro.

Co-Creator is the headline AI tool. It is a chat agent inside the editor that trims, removes filler words, adds captions and builds clips, posts and thumbnails, with thumbnails on Grow and up. Magic Clips cuts 30 to 90 second clips automatically for any recording over three minutes with a transcript. It is not unlimited. Paid plans get three sets per recording on Pro, Grow and Webinar and five on Business, and Free gets a single watermarked clip. Magic Clips, Magic Audio and Co-Creator use no AI credits.

The heavier tools do. AI Translation costs 100 credits a minute and handles 30 languages for videos up to 60 minutes with up to four speakers; AI Twin costs 200 credits a minute and a voice clone 200 credits per hour of audio. Paid plans start with a balance of credits, but credits do not renew monthly, are never refunded and never carry forward. Extra packs are one-time purchases, from 100 credits for $2 to 20,000 for $400, so translation runs about $2 a minute at pack prices, by our arithmetic. Many AI tools are still labelled beta or experimental.

Download tracks before the cycle ends

Separate-track hours reset monthly with no rollover, and live streams count toward them, so pull the tracks you need inside the month.

Streaming, webinars and hosting: which plan unlocks what

Live streaming starts at Grow. Pro has none. From Grow up you can stream to unlimited destinations, including YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram and custom RTMP, at 720p by default and up to 1080p. Each stream stops at eight hours, without warning, and viewers see a delay of roughly 20 to 30 seconds. A small Riverside logo appears on every stream unless you hide it. There is no RTMP ingest and no total-viewer count after the stream ends. Every plan, Free included, gets an audience link that lets up to 100 viewers watch, chat and call in inside Riverside.

Webinars need the Webinar plan. It adds registration for up to 100 registrants, Q&A, polls, surveys, reminders, recurring events, up to five on-demand webinars, a branded lobby and a HubSpot integration. That ceiling is low for marketing teams. Going past 100, up to 10,000 registrants depending on the contract, or connecting Salesforce and Marketo, means Business.

Hosting starts at Pro, with one podcast per studio, episodes under 10 GB and 180 minutes, and YouTube publishing through its API. The RSS feed is audio-only. Video episodes on Apple Podcasts need Grow and an Apple review that can take up to two weeks. Grow also unlocks the website and newsletters with up to 10,000 subscribers, social scheduling and analytics, embeds, and the MCP server.

Data, security and how we score Riverside

One clause deserves attention before any confidential recording. The Privacy Policy revised in June 2026 and the Terms of October 2026 let Riverside use your recordings, transcripts and AI prompts to train its own AI models [4]. Only Business customers can opt out, and only by written agreement. Third-party AI providers may not train on that content. Voice clones and AI Twins of guests are Business only and need a recorded consent video. We found no HIPAA claim, so regulated health conversations belong elsewhere.

The security record is otherwise solid on paper. Riverside holds a SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, with the report available under NDA to enterprise customers, and ISO/IEC 27001 certification; data moves over TLS 1.2 or 1.3 and is encrypted with AES-256 at rest. SAML single sign-on and SCIM exist only on some Business plans. Recordings on Pro, Grow and Webinar move to an archive after two years, and the Terms state that Riverside is not a backup service, so keep your own copies.

We score Riverside on eight axes, each from its own evidence, with recording quality and plan value weighted ahead of support. The recorder carries the result, while the hours cap, the per-account seat rule and the AI-training clause pull it down. Together they land the composite at 3.9/5: a top-tier recorder whose real cost depends on hours, seats and credits. The full breakdown is below.

Platform ratings are one axis among the eight, not the verdict. We read the reviewer platforms as a check on daily use, while the gates, meters and data terms in this review come from Riverside's own pricing, help and legal pages, which change more often than reviews do.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel a Riverside plan?+

Go to Settings, then Plan & Billing, then Cancel plan; access runs to the end of the paid period. The Terms ask for 30 days' notice before renewal, so cancel well ahead of it. The account then drops to Free, where 120 days of inactivity deletes it, so download your separate tracks before the paid cycle ends.

Does Riverside delete a Free account?+

Yes. A Free account left unused for 120 days is deleted along with its content, so download anything you want to keep.

Is there a nonprofit or student discount?+

We found none. Riverside offers promo codes for new users only, and the Business plan accepts no discount codes.

What is Mobile Plus?+

Mobile Plus is a separate app-store subscription at $9.99 a month for the iOS and Android apps, adding 1080p or 4K and WAV exports without a watermark. It cancels only through Apple or Google.

The bottom line

Riverside earns its score as a recorder first. Local capture of separate 4K and 48 kHz tracks for up to 100 people is the reason to buy it, and the per-account price is fair for one person. The value thins out as you grow: collaborators need paid seats, separate tracks are capped at 15 to 25 hours a month, streaming starts at Grow, and webinars stop at 100 registrants below Business. Pick it for remote interviews and podcasts. Skip it if you need large webinars cheaply or must keep recordings out of AI training without a Business contract.
