beehiiv is not built for online stores, and it is worth being clear about that before anything else. Its own comparison page against Mailchimp describes Mailchimp as "built for e-commerce, with support for cart abandonment workflows, sales campaigns, and promotional blasts" and beehiiv as built for publishing [49]. This page sets out where a store can still use beehiiv well, where it cannot, and what it costs, from the vendor's pages read on 9 October 2026.

The short answer

A store should not use beehiiv as its main email platform. It lacks the store-event automations that drive most ecommerce email revenue. A store can use beehiiv well for one job: a content newsletter, a brand magazine or buying guide, that builds an audience and sends it to the shop. For transactional and lifecycle email, Klaviyo, first in our email scores at 3.88, is built around store data.

💡
Toolkit tip

Sync unsubscribes between store and newsletter lists.

## What is missing for a store

Store-event triggers. The automation triggers in beehiiv's feature table are sign-up, email or form submitted, segment entered or exited, tag added or removed, survey submitted, paid subscription purchased or cancelled, product purchased, custom field changed, and unengaged [3]. Product purchased refers to beehiiv's own digital products. There is no trigger for a cart, a checkout, a browsed product or a Shopify order in that table.

Product feeds and recommendations. None appear in the pricing file's feature lists [3].

SMS. No SMS row appears in the feature table [3]. For stores that rely on text messages for flash sales, delivery updates or back-in-stock alerts, that alone rules beehiiv out as the main tool; it can still carry the longer-form content those messages point to. Kit lists SMS on Creator [20]; Klaviyo sells SMS with email [39].

The Shopify connection. The integrations page says beehiiv "supports Shopify integrations for content ingestion, ecommerce workflows, and connecting your store to your newsletter" [27]. It does not list which store events reach beehiiv. Ask before you rely on it.

What a store can use beehiiv for

A content newsletter. Buying guides, stories behind products, maker interviews, seasonal edits. beehiiv's editor, website archive and referral program suit this better than many ecommerce tools, and sends are unlimited [3].

Selling digital products. If the store sells digital goods, such as patterns, presets or guides, beehiiv sells them natively with Apple Pay and Google Pay and states "We never take a cut of your earnings." [65]. Free allows one product, Lite three, Pro unlimited, with order bumps, upsells and custom checkout on Pro [3].

Sponsorship and ad income. A store with a large content audience can earn from the Ad Network or sell sponsorships on Pro [11] [3].

⚠️
Watch out

Subscribers in both tools count in both bills.

## A brand magazine, planned and priced

A homeware brand with 15,000 customers on its store platform starts a fortnightly magazine on beehiiv, offered to customers and to new readers. Six months in, 9,000 have opted in.

The brand keeps abandoned cart and order email in its store platform, and syncs unsubscribes both ways.

Selling digital goods: worked example

A craft brand sells knitting patterns at $9 each. On beehiiv Lite it can sell three products with discount codes and product reviews; on Pro, unlimited products with order bumps, upsells and custom checkout pages [3]. beehiiv takes no cut: "We never take a cut of your earnings." [65]. Card processing applies.

If it sells 400 patterns a month, $3,600 a month in sales, Pro at a list of 8,000 costs $239 a month [3], about 7% of sales; a marketplace taking a percentage would cost more at that volume. Our arithmetic, before card fees.

Ad Network ads in a brand magazine

A store's magazine can carry Ad Network offers and earn from them [11], but a brand should think before it does. The vendor gives publishers control: "You always have full control over which offers you run." [36], and offers can be downvoted [36]. A homeware brand running an ad for a competitor's sofa defeats the purpose of its magazine. For most stores, the better use of a large content audience is selling its own products or sponsorships from partner brands through Pro's storefront [3].

The checkout for digital goods

beehiiv's digital products page lists multiple currencies, Apple Pay and Google Pay, multiple product images and customer reviews on product pages [65]. In the pricing table, product reviews, discount codes, pay-what-you-want pricing, tips and license key delivery start on Lite; order bumps, upsells, custom checkout pages, revenue cohort analytics, purchase webhooks and an API for products on Pro; an affiliate program for products on Enterprise [3]. A store selling software licences or templates with upsells needs Pro.

What beehiiv tells small businesses

beehiiv's small-business page promises to help "Build stronger customer relationships, drive more sales, and grow your brand" . The tools it names are segmentation, monetisation through premium subscriptions, paywalls and native ads, a no-code editor and growth tools . None of them is store automation. The page is an accurate description of what beehiiv offers a business: a publishing platform, not a sales engine.

Seasonal stores and annual plans

A store whose email peaks in November and December pays for its peak list size all year on an annual plan, and annual plans cannot be paused [4]. On monthly billing a store can lower its tier after the season, effective from the next billing cycle [5]. Monthly billing costs about 13% to 17% more than annual [3], which is often less than a season's tier difference.

Pricing for a store's content newsletter

List Lite monthly Lite annual Pro annual
Up to 5,000 $109 $1,140 $2,028
Up to 25,000 $199 $2,028 $3,588
Up to 100,000 $469 $4,788 $7,188

From the vendor's pricing file [3]. A store that already pays Klaviyo for its customer list should count overlapping subscribers twice: once in each tool.

A launch waitlist

beehiiv suits one store task well: collecting interest before a launch. Subscribe forms, signup flows, link-in-bio pages and a website are on every plan [3]. A brand can open a waitlist on Free, up to 2,500 people, and send launch updates with unlimited sends. Surveys, to ask what the waitlist wants, start on Lite [3].

When the product launches, the waitlist can be exported as CSV [28] and imported into the store's email platform, or kept on beehiiv as the brand newsletter.

Importing store customers

Store customers are not automatically newsletter subscribers. beehiiv's import asks you to confirm "that all contacts in the import have knowingly opted in to receive emails from you" [45]. A customer who bought once and ticked no marketing box has not. Import only customers who opted in to marketing, or invite the rest from the store platform to join the newsletter.

Running both: beehiiv for content, a store platform for lifecycle

Many brands run two tools. The split that works:

Email Tool
Welcome series for shoppers Store email platform
Abandoned cart and browse Store email platform
Order confirmations and shipping Store platform or transactional service
Weekly content newsletter beehiiv
Brand magazine and archive beehiiv website

Two cautions. Subscribers who appear in both lists count in both bills. And unsubscribes must be synced: a reader who unsubscribes from the newsletter on beehiiv should not be re-added from the store list, or complaint rates rise. beehiiv publishes a problematic complaint rate of 0.30% or higher [41]; a badly synced list can cross it.

Keeping two lists in step, step by step

  1. Pick the source of truth for consent. Usually the store platform, which records marketing consent at checkout.
  2. Sync new opt-ins into beehiiv through the API or Zapier [60] [27].
  3. Sync unsubscribes back. beehiiv's webhooks report a subscription deleted or paused; on Lite and above, send that event to the store platform [55] [62].
  4. Never re-import a full customer list over beehiiv's existing list; it can re-add people who left.
  5. Watch complaints after each sync; beehiiv treats 0.30% and above as problematic [41].

Policies a store should know

When to move a store off beehiiv

Signs that a store has outgrown beehiiv as its main email tool:

  1. More than a third of email revenue would come from automated flows such as abandoned carts.
  2. The store wants product recommendations in email based on browsing or purchases.
  3. The store wants SMS alongside email.
  4. The team is pushing store events into beehiiv through the API and custom fields to imitate triggers it does not have.

At that point, keep beehiiv for the magazine if it works, and move lifecycle email to a platform built on store data.

Questions to ask before choosing beehiiv for a store

  1. What share of email revenue comes from automated flows? If most of it, beehiiv is the wrong main tool.
  2. Is the content the product? A paid magazine, a pattern library or a newsletter-first brand fits beehiiv well.
  3. Which store events must reach email? The Shopify connection is described for content and workflows [27]; confirm the events before buying.
  4. Do you sell digital goods? beehiiv takes no cut [65].
  5. Who owns consent? Decide which tool records marketing opt-in, and sync from it.
  6. Is the list seasonal? Prefer monthly billing; annual plans cannot pause [4].
  7. Do you need SMS? It is not in beehiiv's feature table [3].

Frequently asked questions

Does beehiiv work with Shopify?+

beehiiv lists a Shopify integration for content ingestion and ecommerce workflows, but its automation table has no cart or order triggers. Confirm which store events reach beehiiv before relying on it.

## The verdict for ecommerce

Use beehiiv for a store's content newsletter or for selling digital goods, not as the store's email engine. Our composite score of 3.61 reflects a strong publishing product; for ecommerce use, its effective score is lower, because the features stores rely on most are not in it.
