FigJam is Figma's online whiteboard: a shared board for brainstorming, diagramming, running meetings and planning, built so that people with no design experience can join in. It lives in the same account and file browser as Figma Design, and on paid plans it comes with every seat. If your team already pays for Figma, you already have FigJam. Many teams forget that.

Everything below comes from Figma's own pages and help center, read on 9 October 2026.

What FigJam is

Figma's guide calls FigJam an online collaboration tool for brainstorming, developing and organizing ideas, and says you do not need prior knowledge of design tools to use it [113]. It suggests uses from decision trees, diagrams and mind maps to design critiques, research synthesis and running meetings [113].

FigJam files are a separate file type that sits alongside design files in teams, projects and drafts, available on any team or plan [113].

Figma's own case for whiteboards is about voice. Introducing Slides, it wrote that FigJam "allows 20 people to voice their opinion in the time it usually takes one person to speak" [327]. That is the job to judge it on.

Use sections to guide workshops and help screen-reader users.

## What it costs

FigJam is included with all seats on every plan [9]. On the free Starter plan you get three FigJam files in the team folder plus unlimited drafts [129]. On paid plans the cheapest seat that can create in FigJam is Collab: US$3 a month billed annually or US$5 monthly on Professional [2].

There is one exception: a free View seat can view and comment on FigJam boards but cannot create in FigJam [92]. Viewers watch; they do not jam.

How the price changed

In 2022 Figma said unlimited shared FigJam whiteboards started at US$3 per editor [7]. Since March 2025, FigJam has been part of every paid seat rather than a separate purchase [5].

For a team that bought FigJam alone for non-designers, the Collab seat is the same price under a new name, and it now includes Figma Slides as well [2].

Generate diagrams from ChatGPT; it does not consume Figma credits.

## A short history

Figma introduced FigJam in beta in 2021, when its own team, newly remote, wanted a shared space for brainstorms and icebreakers [81]. It reached general availability in February 2022, launched alongside paid FigJam plans and the Figma Enterprise plan [81] [7].

In April 2021 Figma said FigJam would be free during its beta, with free and paid plans to follow [8]. In October 2021 it set the terms: from 1 February 2022, Starter would get unlimited personal whiteboards and three shared ones, and paid plans would cost US$3 per editor on FigJam Professional and US$5 on FigJam Organization [323]. The same announcement launched open sessions, widgets and plugins for FigJam [323].

Starting a board

You can create a FigJam board from the file browser, from inside a project, or by typing figjam.new or figma.com/jam in the address bar [113]. Template files help you start with a structure instead of a blank board [113].

Every board is one infinite canvas with a light dot grid [114]. There are no page edges. Pages add another layer of organization, for example one page per recurring meeting [113].

⚠️
Watch out

View seats cannot create in FigJam.

## The toolbar

FigJam's main toolbar groups navigation, objects, tools and inserts [114]. Objects include drawing tools, stickies, shapes and connectors; tools include text, sections, tables, stamps and emotes, comments and AI actions [114].

The insert menu opens templates, widgets, plugins, sticker packs and Community libraries, plus a timer, mind maps, face stamps, code blocks and link previews [114].

Stickies and shapes

Stickies are the core of a board: they carry your name by default, which you can switch off, and they grow vertically as you type [113] [114]. Shapes come in basic, flowchart and miscellaneous sets [113].

For technical diagrams, FigJam offers shape libraries for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud [114]. Connectors can be straight, curved or elbowed, and you can move their ends between objects [113] [114].

⚠️
Watch out

Voting needs a paid team.

## Sticky notes in detail

Stickies hold text only, and their color is picked at random each time you open a file [314]. Figma suggests them for brainstorms, retrospectives, Kanban-style lists and card sorting [314].

Stickers are curated objects for reactions, and components made in Figma Design can be used on a board; components can only be created in Figma Design [312].

Sections, tables and drawing

Sections cluster and contain objects, can be hidden and revealed, and can be linked to directly, which is useful for guiding a workshop step by step [114]. Tables let several people edit at once and accept data pasted from spreadsheets [254].

The drawing tools are a marker, a highlighter, washi tape and an eraser; washi tape can even use an uploaded image [113]. A tidy-up action arranges at least three selected objects into an even grid [113].

Finished diagrams can be locked so nobody moves or edits them; locked objects also refuse new connectors and quick create [313]. Boards accept PNG, JPEG, HEIC, TIFF, WebP and GIF images and MP4, MOV or WebM video [315].

Faster building

Quick create adds the next sticky or shape with one shortcut or a click on its edge, keeps the text field active, and can connect new shapes automatically [279]. It does not work on locked stickies or shapes [279].

Mind maps are built from nodes, sibling and child ideas arranged in a hierarchy, and can be drawn from the shape picker or generated with FigJam AI [277]. Figma suggests them for decision trees, brainstorms and organization structures [277].

Paste a link to a video, article or document and FigJam turns it into a preview; some previews are interactive, letting you pan a Figma Design file or a city map, or stream music while you work [280]. Code blocks add formatted code with syntax highlighting, four lines and TypeScript by default [281].

Anyone with view or edit access can comment, @mention people or user groups, and resolve threads; only a comment's author can edit or delete it [282].

Templates

The FigJam page advertises more than 300 ready-made templates [9], and the whiteboard page offers hundreds of free templates for kickoffs, flow charts, weekly meetings and customer journey maps [11].

Custom templates are a paid feature, and Professional teams can publish only five templates per team [253]. On organizations, any member with edit access can publish team templates [253].

What the templates cover

Figma's template guide lists meeting agendas, daily stand-ups, ice breakers and one-to-ones, user journey maps, fishbone diagrams and flow charts, empathy maps and information architecture diagrams, and even games such as chess and connect four [284]. A daily stand-up template, for example, adds columns for tasks and goals as stickies [284].

Templates are available on any plan to anyone with edit access in a FigJam file [284].

Running meetings

FigJam's meeting tools sit in the top-right panel [114]. The timer runs up to 99 minutes and 59 seconds, there can be one timer per file, and anyone in the file can start, pause or add time; you cannot yet limit it to a single facilitator [241]. Music can play with the timer or on its own [241].

Figma's own meeting guide suggests asking whether a meeting is needed at all, and using a board for pre-work instead [240].

Voting

Voting sessions hide each participant's choices until the session ends, then reveal the tally and each person's votes [242]. Organizers set a prompt and how many votes each person gets, and can run several votes in one file [242].

Starting a vote requires a Professional, Education, Organization or Enterprise team [242]. Starter cannot vote.

Open sessions for outsiders

Open sessions let anyone edit a FigJam file for 24-hour periods, including visitors without Figma accounts who join by link [275]. They are available on Professional, Education, Organization and Enterprise, and inviting visitors does not affect billing [275].

Visitors cannot use comments or audio, and FigJam AI features are off during an open session [275]. That makes open sessions the cheapest way to run a public workshop on FigJam. Visitors pay nothing.

Admin controls on sharing

Organization and Enterprise admins can disable public links and open sessions entirely [276]. Enterprise adds required passwords on public links, autogenerated passwords, link expirations on design files and workspace-level settings [276].

Changes to these settings are recorded in the activity log [276].

Spotlight and audio

Spotlight asks everyone in the file to follow your view, and others can take the spotlight in turn; it works on any plan for anyone with view access [243]. Audio chat works in the browser and desktop app on Professional, Education and Organization plans, but not on mobile or in presentation view [244].

Closed captions for audio are available only in the desktop app [244]. Music can play in the background while people work [241].

FigJam AI

FigJam's AI can generate templates and diagrams from a prompt, sort stickies into groups and summarize them [10]. In credit terms, summaries and clustering are free, and generating templates and diagrams costs 2 to 24 credits a prompt [94].

Jambot, a widget that brings ChatGPT to the board, brainstorms, summarizes, creates mind maps, reframes text and generates code; it needs a paid plan and edit access [252]. The FigJam AI page still says AI is free in beta [10], which no longer matches the credit system [6].

Diagrams from your AI assistant

With Figma's connector, Claude can turn a prompt into flowcharts, decision trees, Gantt charts, sequence and state diagrams in FigJam [247]. Microsoft Copilot can do the same from Microsoft 365 apps [248], and ChatGPT can turn brainstorms into FigJam diagrams [83].

Generating FigJam diagrams through ChatGPT does not consume Figma AI credits at this time [94]. These integrations create FigJam files only, not other Figma products [247] [248].

Diagrams from Slack

Slackbot can turn Slack messages, threads, channels and canvases into a FigJam diagram once the Figma app is installed and connected [278]. Workspaces that installed the Figma app before 18 June 2026 need an owner to re-authorize it first [278].

Like the Claude and Copilot connectors, it creates FigJam files only [278].

A whiteboard for coding agents

In April 2026 Figma pitched FigJam as a whiteboard for engineers and their AI agents: an MCP skill called figma-use-figjam lets agents read and write FigJam boards, a diagram tool handles architecture and entity-relationship layouts, and workflow skills turn docs and codebases into project boards [324].

It builds on use_figma, an MCP tool that lets agents create and edit designs on the canvas [324]. MCP tool calls count against the plan's MCP limits rather than AI credits [155].

Moving from Miro, Mural, Lucid or Jamboard

FigJam imports Miro boards, Mural content and Lucid documents from PDF exports, after which text is editable and objects can be moved [115] [187] [116]. None of those tools exports boards in bulk, so Figma suggests sorting boards by date to pick what to move [115]. Migrations are manual.

Google Jamboard files also import from PDF, but each Jamboard frame arrives as an image [249]. Comments do not import from Miro [115].

Ready to put Figma to the test?Try Figma →

What FigJam imports

FigJam accepts PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF and WebP images, CSV data as tables, PDF files and MP4, MOV or WebM video; GIFs import without animation [285]. You can also paste components and stickers made in Figma Design [285].

CSV import turns spreadsheet rows into a FigJam table; Figma's example is a product-feedback form discussed and sorted as a team [286].

Getting work out

You can export a whole board as an image, or export stickies and tables to CSV, with each sticky becoming a cell [246]. SVG export is not supported; the workaround is to copy objects into a Figma Design file and export from there [246].

Working with Figma Design

Copy and paste works between FigJam and design files, and even between an iPad and a computer signed into the same account [251]. Figma Slides can generate a deck outline from a FigJam board with AI on paid plans [262].

That handoff, from board to design to deck in one account, is FigJam's main advantage over a standalone whiteboard. Nobody re-uploads anything.

FigJam on an iPad

The standalone FigJam for iPad app was retired on 8 January 2026; FigJam now runs in the Figma app on iOS 16 or later and Android 8 or later, or on the web [245]. Figma says the Figma app has full feature parity and no work was lost in the move [245].

Accessibility

Figma's accessibility advice for FigJam starts with sections, which make boards easier to navigate with a screen reader [250]. FigJam also supports screen-reader use and alt text on images [250] [114].

Screen-reader access is off by default; you turn it on in Accessibility settings from the quick actions menu [283]. With Adapt content on, stickers, connectors and washi tape are left out of the tab order to keep screen readers less verbose [283].

FigJam in the classroom

A FigJam add-on for Google Classroom lets teachers assign, collect and grade FigJam files, on all plans [117]. Figma's Jamboard page points schools to the Education plan for a free move to FigJam [12].

K-12 users get FigJam through the Education plan, though not Figma's AI tools [98].

In December 2024 Figma published 27 classroom activities for FigJam, from building classroom community to visualizing STEM concepts and checking understanding together, adaptable to any subject [82].

FigJam against Miro

Miro's free plan keeps three editable boards, Starter costs US$8 per member a month billed yearly and Business US$20 [175]. FigJam's Starter allows three FigJam files, and a Collab seat costs US$3 a month annually on Professional [2].

Miro advertises more than 250 integrations and its own MCP server [175]. FigJam's advantage is the shared account with Figma Design and Slides; Miro's is a larger dedicated ecosystem.

FigJam against Mural

Mural's free plan includes three editable murals, Team+ is US$9.99 per member a month billed annually and Business US$17.99 [182]. Mural focuses on facilitation, rooms and guests [182].

For teams that run large structured workshops with outside guests, Mural's model is built for that. For product teams, FigJam's link to design files matters more. Context wins.

What to watch

View seats cannot create in FigJam [92]. Voting needs a paid team [242]. Custom templates are capped at five per team on Professional [253]. Audio has no mobile support [244].

And FigJam files count toward Starter's limit of three [129]. Three fills fast.

Who should use FigJam

Product teams already on Figma, who want boards next to their designs and decks without another vendor. Teachers using Google Classroom. Former Jamboard users looking for a free home for old boards. Engineers mapping systems with agents.

Frequently asked questions

Is FigJam free?+

Yes on Starter, with three FigJam files plus drafts. On paid plans it is included with Full, Dev and Collab seats; a Collab seat costs US$3 a month billed annually on Professional.

Can I import Miro boards into FigJam?+

Yes, from a PDF export of the Miro board. Text becomes editable; comments are not imported.

## Verdict

FigJam is a capable whiteboard that becomes compelling when you already pay for Figma, because it costs nothing extra on a paid seat and links straight into design and slides. As a standalone purchase it competes on price with Miro and Mural rather than on depth.
