The short answer
Freshdesk is Freshworks' customer-support help desk, and it is built around email. Every query from a support mailbox, the customer portal, a web form or Facebook becomes a ticket in a shared inbox, and automations, SLA timers, routing and reports work on that queue. Freshdesk's pricing page lists Growth at $19 per agent per month billed annually, or $23 per agent per month billed monthly.[1] Billing is per agent, and every agent on an account sits on the same plan; our Freshdesk pricing guide has the full breakdown.
Our verdict is simple. Freshdesk is a mature, well-documented ticketing desk for teams that answer customers mostly by email, and Freshworks positions it for businesses of about 50 to 500 employees. The plan most growing teams end up needing is Pro, not Growth, because automatic assignment, multiple SLA policies and custom roles start there. Skip it if your customers expect live chat. Standalone Freshdesk offers no web chat, WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS to new accounts, and those channels live in a separate product.
Freshdesk, Omni, Freshservice: which product is which
The Freshworks catalog confuses buyers, so start with the map. Freshdesk was founded in October 2010, and the company renamed itself Freshworks in June 2017 as the umbrella brand; Freshworks says more than 74,000 customers use its products. Standalone Freshdesk covers email with unlimited support mailboxes from Growth, a customer portal with a knowledge base, a lite help widget for articles and forms, Facebook, and phone through Freshcaller or a telephony app. Freshdesk Omni, formerly the Customer Service Suite, adds web chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS through your own Twilio account, chatbots and a voice add-on in one workspace.
Two other names trip people up. Freshservice is a different product for IT and employee service, the internal help desk, while Freshdesk faces your customers. Freshsales is the company's CRM. Freshdesk is not a CRM: it keeps contacts and companies with custom fields, segments and notes for support work, pulls contact details from Freshsales, Salesforce, Zoho CRM or HubSpot through apps, and shows recent deals from Freshsales. Freshworks itself says teams that run almost entirely on email may be better served by plain Freshdesk than by Omni. If chat matters to you, read our Freshdesk Omni guide before you buy anything.
New accounts get 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions once, not monthly, and they last until used. Let the Email AI Agent draft answers as private notes first, and judge the quality before customers see replies.
What each plan unlocks
Billed annually, Growth comes to $228 per agent a year, Pro to $660 and Enterprise to $1,068. New buyers start with a 14-day trial of Enterprise features that needs no card. When it ends, you pay for a plan or the account is suspended, and trial data can be deleted unless exported. There is no self-serve free plan. Freshdesk can move a small account into its Free program through Customer Success: up to 2 agents, email ticketing only, free for 6 months according to the help center. Freshworks can end or charge for free programs at any time.
Prices shown are what Freshdesk lists for visitors in the United States, in US dollars. Your price can differ by country, currency and local taxes such as VAT.
| Plan | Price per agent per month | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | $19 billed annually, $23 billed monthly | One default SLA policy, one set of business hours, custom fields and statuses, scenario automations, webhooks, marketplace apps, API at 100 calls a minute, Email AI Agent |
| Pro | $55 billed annually, $66 billed monthly | Round-robin and load-balanced assignment, multiple SLA policies with escalations, custom roles, collaborators, up to 15 custom dashboards, multilingual help desk, up to 5 brands, Copilot add-on |
| Enterprise | $89 billed annually, $107 billed monthly | Skill-based routing, sandbox, audit log, IP restrictions, Freddy AI Insights, HIPAA with a BAA, PCI field on request |
The jump that matters is Growth to Pro. Growth has no automatic round-robin or load-based assignment, one SLA policy covers every customer, and there are no custom roles. By our arithmetic, a 5-agent team on Growth billed annually pays $1,140 a year, and a 10-agent team on Pro billed annually pays $6,600 a year. Billing annually costs about 17% less than paying monthly on each plan; put the other way, monthly billing costs about 20% more. Occasional agents can use day passes, and every plan includes 3 free ones. Collaborators on Pro are free seats who join tickets without a full license.
Renewal is where buyers get caught. Cancellation and downgrades take effect only at the end of the paid term, payments are non-refundable, and plans auto-renew unless written notice arrives at least 30 days before expiry. Freshworks can also raise prices at renewal with 30 days' notice; the pricing guide covers proration and suspension. Added agents and upgrades are charged pro rata at once, while fewer seats wait for the next cycle.
On Pro, collaborators are free seats who can join tickets, and every plan includes 3 free day passes for occasional agents.
Freddy AI: three pieces, separate meters
Freddy AI comes in three pieces, each billed differently. Freddy AI Agent answers customers. On standalone Freshdesk that means the Email AI Agent, which replies inside the ticket thread using your published articles, uploaded files, crawled pages and Q&A pairs; the Chat AI Agent exists only in Omni. New accounts on every paid plan get 500 sessions once per account, not every month, and they last until used. After that, sessions cost $49 per pack of 100, added to the current billing cycle; unused purchased sessions do not carry over to the next cycle. An email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email, however many messages follow. At zero, the AI agents stop taking new queries.
By our arithmetic, 1,000 more sessions after the first 500 come to $490 in ten packs. That is fine for a pilot. It is worth modeling before you point the agent at every mailbox, because the meter runs on conversations, not on outcomes. A shadow mode drafts AI answers as private notes without sending them, which lets a team judge quality before customers see a single reply. Each ticket source can have one active AI agent, and a handover leaves a private-note summary for the human who takes over.
Freddy AI Copilot is the agent-side assistant: ticket summaries, reply suggestions, tone rewrites, auto triage and Live Translate, capped at 100 translated tickets per license a month and pooled across the account. Freddy AI Copilot costs $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 per agent per month billed monthly, on Pro and Enterprise only, for whichever agents you choose. One catch: Freshdesk can automatically assign licenses you bought but left unassigned to all eligible agents after an in-product notice, unless you opt out through support. Freddy AI Insights, the reporting assistant with root-cause analysis and plain-English questions, is Enterprise only and English only.
Check the data terms before you switch anything on. Freshworks' Supplemental Terms say AI training is on unless the customer opts out by email; processing for training stops within seven business days, and the data leaves training within 180 days.[2] The same terms say Freshworks will not use customer data to train third-party hosted models, including Azure OpenAI, and that the customer owns its data and the AI output. Freshworks' product page says customers can opt out of model training and disable specific AI features.
Freshdesk plans auto-renew for the same term unless written notice arrives at least 30 days before expiry, and prices can rise at renewal with 30 days' notice. Set a reminder 45 to 60 days out; cancellation takes effect only at the end of the paid term.
Limits, security and what is missing
The limits are generous for email work. Freshdesk sets no limit on tickets or storage, though closed tickets left untouched for 120 days are archived as read-only, and a reply then opens a new ticket. The API is version 2, authenticates with an agent's API key, and allows 100, 400 or 700 calls a minute account-wide on Growth, Pro and Enterprise; webhooks and invalid calls count against that budget. A Freshdesk MCP server, generally available since 10 September 2026, lets AI tools such as Claude Desktop or Cursor reach tickets and contacts with an API key, with 100, 500 or 1,000 actions a month included by plan.
Security is a real strength. Freshdesk is audited every year for ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and SOC 2 Type 2,[3] encrypts data with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2 or newer in transit, and lets you choose a US, EU, India, Australia or Middle East data center at sign-up. Single sign-on supports SAML, OAuth2, OIDC and JWT. HIPAA with a BAA is Enterprise only, and so is the PCI vault field for card data. Support runs 24/5 on all paid plans, with complimentary onboarding.
The gaps are specific. Freshdesk has no recurring or scheduled tickets, no NPS in its surveys, no bulk email lists and no ticket locking, only collision alerts. There is no customer-facing mobile app; the iPhone, iPad and Android apps are for agents. Freshdesk does not publish an uptime percentage or an uptime SLA, only a status page. Automations never run retroactively, and one rule cannot trigger another, which shapes how you design workflows. Freshdesk says, as of October 2026, that its Arcade gamification feature will be deprecated or discontinued soon, so do not count it as a reason to buy.
How we score Freshdesk
We score Freshdesk on our standard axes, each on its own evidence, and weight capability, pricing clarity and fit above user sentiment. Freshdesk is the first help desk we rate, so the score stands on its own, not as a rank inside a category. Here is the full breakdown, axis by axis.
Email (multiple support mailboxes from Growth), a customer portal and knowledge base, a help widget with web forms, Facebook (a Growth+ channel for new accounts), phone through Freshcaller or telephony apps such as Aircall, Five9, Genesys and Amazon Connect, and eBay on Pro (on request) all feed one ticket queue; the Freshworks Marketplace lists 1,200+ apps (Growth and up), with CRM data from Freshsales, Salesforce, Zoho CRM and HubSpot, plus Shopify, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Jira; REST API v2 from Growth at 100, 400 or 700 calls a minute account-wide, Trigger Webhook in automations from Growth and Trigger API from Pro, and an MCP server generally available since 10 Sep 2026. Held back by no live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS in standalone Freshdesk for new accounts (those need Freshdesk Omni), every webhook counting toward the API limit, an MCP server that takes an API key only with 100 actions a month on Growth, then $15 per 1,000 actions, Connector Apps such as Salesforce running on paid connector tasks ($80 per 5,000 tasks), paid marketplace apps billed separately, and no apps or API on the Free program.
A deep ticketing help desk: SLA policies with reminders and escalations (up to 1,000), business hours, custom ticket, contact and company fields, custom statuses and objects, three kinds of automation rules plus scenario macros, round-robin and load-balanced assignment from Pro and skill-based routing on Enterprise (up to 180 skills), collaborators (5,000 on Pro), parent-child tickets (50 per parent), shared ownership, a knowledge base on every plan with multilingual support and community forums from Pro, up to 5 products or brands on Pro and unlimited on Enterprise, custom dashboards and reports, and on Enterprise a sandbox, audit log, Workspaces and IP restrictions. Held back by the routing and SLA depth starting at Pro (Growth has one default SLA policy and no automatic assignment), no recurring or scheduled tickets, no NPS surveys, no bulk email, no ticket locking (collision alerts only), closed tickets archived read-only after 120 days of inactivity, irreversible merges and splits, and no customer-facing mobile app.
Freshdesk's pricing page lists Growth at $23 per agent per month billed monthly or $19 per agent per month billed annually ($228 per agent a year), Pro at $66 or $55 ($660), Enterprise at $107 or $89 ($1,068); a 14-day trial with Enterprise features and no card; 3 free day passes, then $2, $7 or $12 per pass for occasional agents; free collaborators on Pro; 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions included once per account, then $49 per 100 sessions. Held back by every agent being a paid seat on the same plan, no free plan for new buyers (Freshdesk can move a small account into its Free program only through Customer Success), the routing, SLA and role controls a growing team needs sitting at Pro, Freddy AI Copilot as a per-agent add-on on Pro and Enterprise ($29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 billed monthly; 10 Pro agents billed annually pay $6,600 a year plus $3,480 for Copilot, our arithmetic), AI sessions that do not roll over, no PayPal, no refunds, and renewals that can rise with 30 days' notice.
A refreshed interface (Dew) for new accounts, every channel landing as a ticket in one shared inbox, scenario automations for repeat work, a 14-day trial with Enterprise features and no card, agent apps for iPhone, iPad and Android on every plan (18 languages, app lock, bulk actions), and a shadow mode that lets the Email AI Agent draft private notes before it ever sends. Held back by admin settings and workflow setup only on the web, hourly triggers that run once an hour and may fire up to about 58 minutes late, automation rules that never run retroactively and cannot trigger one another, reports that refresh every 30 minutes rather than live, AI workflow drafts that replace the live version with no rollback, and a product map (Freshdesk, Freshdesk Omni, Freshchat, Freshcaller, Freshservice) a buyer has to untangle before choosing a plan.
Freddy AI in three pieces: an Email AI Agent on Growth, Pro and Enterprise that answers tickets from mailboxes, the portal and web forms in about 70 languages, built in AI Agent Studio with no-code agentic workflows, API actions and knowledge from solution articles, files, URLs, Google Drive, SharePoint and Confluence; Freddy AI Copilot with reply suggestions, summaries, auto triage, sentiment and Live Translate; and Freddy AI Insights with root cause analysis and Conversational Insights on Enterprise; plus an MCP server for AI tools. Held back by the Chat AI Agent only on Freshdesk Omni, a session meter (500 once per account, then $49 per 100 sessions, no rollover) that stops the AI agents at zero, Copilot on Pro and Enterprise only at $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 billed monthly, Live Translate capped at 100 tickets per Copilot license a month, Insights in English only on Enterprise, and Supplemental Terms that turn AI Training on unless the customer opts out by email.
Freshdesk is audited annually for ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and SOC 2 Type 2 (reports through the Customer Trust Portal), with Level 1 PCI DSS through an isolated vault field and HIPAA with a BAA on Enterprise, data centers in the US, EU, India, Australia and the Middle East, AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2+, EU-US, UK and Swiss Data Privacy Framework certification, a public status page, and, Freshworks says, 24/5 support and complimentary onboarding on all paid plans. Held back by no published uptime percentage or uptime SLA, support at the same level on every paid plan, support responsiveness and billing among the recurring themes in low-star reviews, HIPAA and PCI only on Enterprise (no PCI on Freshdesk Omni), cancellation that takes effect only at the end of the term with payments non-refundable, and data kept for export only 14 days after closure.
A large help center that publishes the numbers buyers need: API limits per minute with sub-limits per plan, what counts toward them, field and configuration limits, automation behaviour, AI session and MCP metering, archiving and export rules, plus developer API docs with a deprecation policy (six months after a new major version, 60 days' notice for breaking changes), MCP guides, a new-features page and Terms, Supplemental Terms and a DPA. Held back by many pages not updated: comparison pages with a 'from $15' price, Omni prices labelled as Freshdesk, a 'forever free' plan and a 21-day trial; help articles still listing PayPal, 'Adds advanced configuration, multiple SLAs, and enterprise-grade controls' on Enterprise, Insights through a Copilot license and a child-ticket cap of 10; a GDPR page citing Privacy Shield; and plan details spread between Freshdesk, Omni, Freshchat and Freshcaller pages.
Ratings are high on business-software sites and app stores: G2 4.4 from 3,877 reviews, Software Advice 4.5 from 3,494 (Gartner Digital Markets network, Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice counted once), App Store US 4.49 from 3,000 ratings and Google Play 4.2 from about 8.98K; Trustpilot 1.5 from 412. Trustpilot collects mostly unhappy customers, so it is a map of complaints (support responsiveness, billing, cancellation timing, price increases, legacy-plan moves, the free plan going away), not a trend. Axis score 4.3: the mean of each platform's displayed rating with at least 30 reviews, app stores included, weighted by review count (computed 4.28, rounded).
Weighted across the axes above (weights reflect what actually drives the decision in this category). How we score →
User ratings are one axis among several, and the platforms measure different things. We read G2, Software Advice, Trustpilot and both app stores. Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice belong to the same Gartner Digital Markets network and share reviews, so we count them once. The app stores rate the agent apps, not the web help desk itself.
Read the business-software review sites for detail on daily ticket work, and read Trustpilot as a map of complaints. Trustpilot draws mostly unhappy customers, so it cannot show a trend. Its newest reviews keep returning to support responsiveness, billing and charges, account access, cancellation that only takes effect at term end, price increases, forced moves off legacy plans and the free plan going away. Those are commercial frictions, not ticketing failures, and they match the renewal and plan-change rules above.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move my Freshdesk account to another data center later?+
You choose the data center (US, EU, India, Australia or Middle East) at sign-up. Moving it later needs a support ticket.
What happens to my data if I cancel Freshdesk?+
Under Freshworks' Terms, data stays available for export for 14 days after closure. After that Freshworks may delete it, and deleted data cannot be recovered.
Can I buy Freddy AI Copilot during the trial?+
Yes. Freshdesk lets trial accounts buy Copilot, which is otherwise sold on Pro and Enterprise only.
Does Freshdesk handle phone support?+
Yes, through Freshcaller or a telephony app such as Amazon Connect, Five9, Genesys or Aircall, with calls turned into tickets. In Freshdesk Omni, phone is the Voice add-on. Freshcaller, the Voice add-on and third-party telephony are billed separately from Freshdesk.
The bottom line
Freshdesk earns 3.7/5 as a dependable, email-first help desk with clear plan gates, solid security and an AI layer priced on separate meters you should model before switching it on. Buy Growth for a small team that can live with one SLA policy and no automatic assignment; plan on Pro once routing, roles and several SLAs matter. Set a renewal reminder 45 to 60 days before expiry on day one. If your customers want chat or messaging, look at Omni or our Freshdesk alternatives instead.
