Freshdesk costs less than Zendesk for teams whose tickets arrive mostly by email, and the gap opens against Zendesk Suite Professional. At the entry level the two cost the same, because Freshdesk Growth and Zendesk Support Team both list $19 per agent per month billed annually. Freshdesk's pricing page lists Pro at $55 per agent per month billed annually, with multiple SLA policies and custom roles. Zendesk lists Suite Team at $55 and Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month billed annually, and keeps custom roles on its sales-quoted top plan. Zendesk includes automatic assignment on every plan; Freshdesk starts it on Pro. Zendesk also wins on built-in messaging channels and on a longer data export window. Pick Zendesk Suite when chat and social come first.
What each one charges per agent
Both vendors bill per agent per month, and both charge less for annual billing. Freshdesk's pricing page lists Growth at $23 per agent per month billed monthly or $19 per agent per month billed annually, Pro at $66 per agent per month billed monthly or $55 per agent per month billed annually, and Enterprise at $107 per agent per month billed monthly or $89 per agent per month billed annually.[1] Every agent on a Freshdesk account sits on the same plan, so one team lead who needs Pro moves everyone; the full plan math lives in our Freshdesk pricing guide.
Zendesk's pricing page lists Support Team at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $25 per agent per month billed monthly, Suite Team at $55 per agent per month billed annually or $69 billed monthly, and Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month billed annually or $149 billed monthly.[2] Suite Enterprise has no public price. Zendesk sells it through sales, so its top tier cannot be priced from the page, while Freshdesk publishes every tier it sells.
By our arithmetic, five agents on annual billing pay $1,140 a year on either entry plan. Billed monthly, the same five agents pay $1,380 a year on Freshdesk Growth and $1,500 on Zendesk Support Team. The middle tier is where they split. Ten agents billed annually pay $6,600 a year on Freshdesk Pro and $13,800 on Zendesk Suite Professional, a gap of $7,200. Zendesk Suite Team lands on the same $6,600 as Freshdesk Pro for ten agents, but the two plans buy different things.
Freshdesk can assign unassigned Copilot licenses to all eligible agents after a notice unless you contact support to opt out.
Plan for plan: SLAs, routing and roles
The cheapest plans already differ. Freshdesk Growth includes business hours and one default SLA policy, while Zendesk's own pricing page marks SLAs, skills-based routing and multiple ticket forms as features that are not on Support Team. An entry-level team that promises response times therefore gets an SLA clock only on the Freshdesk side. Routing runs the other way. Zendesk includes automatic assignment by agent availability and workload on all plans, while Freshdesk Growth lacks it. Growth also lacks multiple SLA policies and custom roles. Those arrive on Pro, together with round-robin assignment, SLA reminders and escalations, 5,000 free collaborators, up to 15 custom dashboards and a multilingual help desk.
At the top, Freshdesk Enterprise adds skill-based routing with up to 180 skills, a sandbox, an audit log, IP restrictions and Freddy AI Insights at a listed price. Zendesk keeps audit logs, custom agent roles, the sandbox and approval workflows on its top plan, which only sales can quote. Custom roles show the clearest split. Freshdesk unlocks them on Pro, Zendesk only at the top. Freshdesk dashboards are live on every plan, while Zendesk refreshes them every 24 hours on lower plans.
| Area | Freshdesk | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| SLAs on the entry plan | One default SLA policy on Growth | Not on Support Team |
| Automatic assignment | Pro and up | All plans |
| Custom roles | Pro and up | Top plan |
| Sandbox and audit log | Enterprise | Top plan |
| HIPAA with a BAA | Enterprise | Top plan |
| Free trial | 14 days, Enterprise features, no card | 14 days, Suite Professional with Copilot, no card |
| Data export after leaving | 14 days after closure | During the term and 30 days after |
| Data centers | US, EU, India, Australia, Middle East | US, APAC, EEA, UK |
| Ticket attachments | 20 MB per conversation (Growth and up) | 50 MB on all plans |
| Standard support | 24/5 on paid plans, plus onboarding | Weekdays 10am to 4pm ET |
| Payment | Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex; no PayPal | Direct debit, card, PayPal |
If you promise response times, check which plan carries SLAs on each side before comparing totals. Freshdesk Growth has one default SLA policy; multiple policies start on Pro.
Channels: email-first versus messaging-first
Standalone Freshdesk turns email, the customer portal, Facebook and phone calls through Freshcaller into tickets in one shared inbox. Its help widget offers knowledge base articles and web forms, but no live chat. New Freshdesk accounts get no WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS either. Those channels, plus web chat and chatbots, belong to Omni, the Freshworks bundle that adds Freshchat messaging to Freshdesk ticketing. Freshworks itself says teams that run almost entirely on email may be better served by plain Freshdesk than by Omni.
Zendesk's Suite plans include messaging and social channels: Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, Slack, WeChat and LINE, with live chat departments capped at two on lower Suite plans and unlimited on Professional. Zendesk voice offers local and toll-free numbers in 75+ countries, with minutes billed per minute. So the fair channel match is Omni against Suite. Omni lists $29 per agent per month billed annually on its Growth plan and $79 per agent per month billed annually on its Pro plan. By our arithmetic, ten agents billed annually pay $3,480 a year on Omni Growth and $6,600 on Zendesk Suite Team. Omni is the cheaper route; Zendesk's case is one product with that whole channel list built in. Our Freshdesk Omni guide covers what that bundle adds.
AI: sessions versus automated resolutions
The two vendors meter their AI agents in different units. Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions once per account, not every month, and they last until used. After that it charges $49 per pack of 100 sessions, added to the current billing cycle; unused purchased sessions do not carry over to the next cycle, and the AI agents stop answering at zero. An email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email. Standalone Freshdesk runs only the Email AI Agent; the Chat AI Agent needs Omni. A session costs the same whether the AI solves the problem or hands it to a person.
Zendesk includes AI agents on every plan and charges per automated resolution, meaning a request closed without escalation to a human. Support Team and Suite Team include 5 resolutions per agent a month and Suite Professional 10, capped at 10,000 a year; extra resolutions cost $1.50 each committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. That allowance renews monthly, so a team that stays inside it pays no Zendesk overage. By our arithmetic, a session costs $0.49. Once both included allowances are used up, sessions are cheaper per solved request when your AI resolves more than about 33% of conversations against the committed rate, or about 25% against pay-as-you-go. Below those rates, paying only for resolutions wins.
A Freshdesk AI Agent session is billed whether or not the AI solves the request, and the 500 included sessions come once per account. Zendesk charges only for automated resolutions beyond the ones its plans include each month.
Agent assistants follow the same pattern. Freddy AI Copilot costs $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 per agent per month billed monthly, on Pro and Enterprise only, bought for the agents you choose. Watch the fine print: Freshdesk can auto-assign unassigned licenses to all eligible agents unless you opt out. Zendesk's Copilot add-on costs $50 per agent per month paid yearly and requires Professional or higher. For ten agents billed annually, by our arithmetic, Copilot adds $3,480 a year on Freshdesk Pro and $6,000 on Zendesk, bringing totals to $10,080 and $19,800.
Contracts, trials and leaving
Both trials last 14 days and need no card. Freshdesk's runs on Enterprise features; Zendesk's defaults to Suite Professional with Copilot. When a Freshdesk trial ends, you pick a plan or the account is suspended, and trial data is deleted unless you export it. Neither path leads to a self-serve free plan at Freshdesk: it can move a small account into its Free program, up to two agents, only through Customer Success. Freshworks can also end or start charging for free programs at any time.
The contracts look alike. Both vendors make payments non-refundable, block downgrades and agent cuts mid-term, and renew automatically unless notice arrives at least 30 days before the term ends, so set a reminder 45 to 60 days out.[3] Freshdesk cancellations take effect at the end of the term, and renewal fees can rise with 30 days' notice. Zendesk says a customer who cancels early still owes the rest of the term, and it keeps data exportable for 30 days after the term, against Freshdesk's 14 days after closure.[4] Zendesk also offers multi-year terms, PayPal and four currencies.
Support hours split clearly. Freshdesk includes 24/5 support and complimentary onboarding on every paid plan. Zendesk's basic support runs weekdays from 10am to 4pm ET, and round-the-clock coverage needs a paid Premier plan. Budget time for a switch. Moving between them is real work either way. Zendesk's own page quotes a customer, HeliosX, saying its move away from Freshdesk took about three weeks.
Freshdesk keeps data exportable for 14 days after closure and Zendesk for 30 days after the term. Run a full export before you give notice.
Security, limits and what reviewers complain about
Compliance lands at the top on both sides. Freshdesk signs a HIPAA BAA only on Enterprise, with mandatory settings such as IP whitelisting and SAML SSO or an advanced password policy, and it offers a PCI vault field on Enterprise. Zendesk supports HIPAA through a BAA on its top plan. Freshdesk is audited yearly for ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and SOC 2 Type 2. On AI data, Freshworks' terms switch AI training on unless the customer opts out, while Zendesk's agreement has customers instruct it to use service data to improve its products.
API limits are published unevenly. Freshdesk's limits are 100, 400 and 700 calls a minute on Growth, Pro and Enterprise, counted account-wide, with 50 during the trial; extra calls can be bought, but Freshdesk publishes neither their price nor a ceiling. Zendesk publishes a paid add-on that raises its limit to 2,500 requests a minute for accounts with 10 or more seats. Storage runs the other way. Zendesk caps it per account plus a per-agent allowance; Freshdesk sets no storage limit.
The business-software sites collect reviews from people who use Freshdesk at work every day, so they speak to the product itself. Its Trustpilot page reads differently, as most writers there are unhappy customers. The recurring complaints are support responsiveness, billing and charges, cancellation that only takes effect at the end of the term, price increases and forced moves off legacy plans. Read those themes as a checklist for your contract review, not as a trend in quality.
Frequently asked questions
Is Freshdesk a CRM like Salesforce?+
No. Freshdesk keeps contacts and companies for support work; Freshworks' CRM is Freshsales, and Freshdesk also connects to Salesforce, Zoho CRM and HubSpot.
How do part-time agents work on each?+
Freshdesk sells day passes for occasional agents, includes 3 free passes on every plan, and adds 5,000 free collaborators on Pro and Enterprise. Zendesk offers light agents, team members with limited ticket access who need no paid seat: its pricing page includes up to 100 where a plan offers them and sells more through an add-on.
Can I connect Freshdesk to AI tools such as Claude or Cursor?+
Yes. Freshdesk's MCP server has been generally available since 10 Sep 2026, uses an API key, and includes 100, 500 or 1,000 actions a month on Growth, Pro and Enterprise.
Does Freshdesk have mobile apps for agents?+
Freshdesk has iPhone, iPad and Android apps for agents on every plan, but no customer-facing app, and admin setup is web-only.
The bottom line
Choose Freshdesk if your support runs on email and you want multiple SLA policies and custom roles on one published-price plan (Zendesk keeps custom roles on its sales-quoted top plan): Freshdesk Pro lists them at $55 per agent per month billed annually. Choose Zendesk Suite if chat, WhatsApp and social should live in one product, or if you want automatic assignment on the entry plan, a 30-day export window and PayPal billing. On AI, compare only past both included allowances. Beyond them, Zendesk's per-resolution pricing protects teams whose AI resolves under a quarter of conversations, and Freshdesk's sessions cost less above a third.
