Cancelling Kit can mean three different things: moving a paid plan to Free, closing the account entirely, or, for a reader, stopping a newsletter or a paid subscription bought from a creator who uses Kit. This page covers all three, from Kit's help centre and terms read on 9 October 2026.

If you are a reader

To stop a newsletter sent with Kit, use the unsubscribe link in any email. If you pay for a creator's newsletter or product through Kit, cancelling the subscription stops future charges, and you keep the paid content until the next billing date; a confirmation follows at the end of the period [27]. Unsubscribing from the creator's list also ends paid subscription charges [27].

Refunds of a creator's product are the creator's decision; Kit processes them from the creator's account, and only full refunds are supported [29].

💡
Toolkit tip

Check for a lower band before cancelling over price.

## If you are a creator: three ways out
Option Effect Billing
Downgrade to Free Account kept; paid features stop at the end of the period No further charges
Lower your subscriber band Same plan, lower price From the next billing date
Delete the account All data removed within 24 to 48 hours Ends

From the help centre [6] [4] [24].

Before you decide: what you will lose and keep

Cancelling a paid plan by moving to Free keeps your subscribers, tags, forms, landing pages, broadcasts and products. It stops visual automations and sequences, removes the custom domain and branding removal, and paid apps need a paid plan again [6] [55]. Paid subscriptions you sell keep billing your readers, because selling is a free-plan feature [6].

That last point surprises people. Moving to Free does not stop your own products from charging your customers. If you are closing the business, cancel or refund those subscriptions as well [29].

⚠️
Watch out

The terms say no refunds; ask within 30 days citing the help centre.

## Pausing instead of cancelling

Kit's billing FAQ answers the question directly: "You can pause or downgrade to the free plan at any time. Your data will be saved, and you can return later at the new plan price." [4]. Returning means choosing from the current plans and prices; a customer who left before the 2025 increase does not return at the old price [4].

If you expect to come back within months, moving to Free is usually the practical pause: lists, forms, products and archives stay, and only automations and paid features stop [6].

Moving to Free

You can switch to the Free plan at any time from your billing settings [6]. On a paid plan you keep paid features until the end of the current billing period; on a trial, they end immediately [6]. What you built on the paid plan stays in the account, but automations and sequences stop running on Free and return when you upgrade [6]. Free holds up to 10,000 subscribers [6]; a larger list needs pruning first.

Lowering the band instead

If the reason is price, check whether a lower band is available. After cleaning the list, Kit shows a Switch to a lower tier link in Account & Billing; the lower price applies from the next billing date if the count is still below the limit then [4]. Kit's own example: from 1,200 subscribers on the $59 band to 800 on the $39 band [4].

Step by step: lowering your band

  1. Clean the list of inactive or unconfirmed subscribers.
  2. Open Account & Billing in your settings.
  3. If you are eligible, a Switch to a lower tier link appears; click it.
  4. Review the popup showing your current band and the lowest band available.
  5. Click OK, understood. A confirmation appears on the Account & Billing page.

The lower band applies on your next billing date, and only if your count is still below its limit then; if an even lower band fits, Kit applies that one [4].

Step by step: Pro to Creator, annual to monthly

To move from Pro to Creator, click Downgrade on the Account & Billing tab [4]. To move from annual to monthly billing, ask through the in-app messenger; the change happens at the end of the annual cycle [4]. Neither change is immediate, so make it well before the renewal you want to avoid.

Cancelling a paid plan

"When you cancel your account, it will remain active until the last day of your billing period." [4]. Annual plans can be switched to monthly only by asking support, effective at the end of the annual term [4].

Refunds when you cancel

The billing article: "We have a 30-day refund policy, so if you cancel, you can request any funds paid in the last 30 days to be refunded in full." [4]. It applies to annual plans too, and excludes payments older than 30 days. The Terms of Service say that if you cancel before the end of the period, "we will not refund any Paid Services Fees already paid to us" [8]. Request a refund within 30 days, in writing, quoting the billing article.

Worked example. A creator pays $390 for a year of Creator on 1 March and cancels on 20 March. The payment is within 30 days, so the billing article's policy covers a full refund. Cancelling on 15 April is outside the window: the account stays active to the end of February next year, with no refund [4].

Annual plans: the timing that matters

On an annual plan, three dates decide what you pay. Within 30 days of the renewal payment, the billing article's refund policy covers a full refund [4]. After that, cancelling keeps the account active to the end of the year with no refund [4]. And a switch from annual to monthly, requested through support, only takes effect at the end of the annual term [4].

If you might leave within the year, monthly billing costs two extra months' price but leaves you free to stop. At 3,000 subscribers that is $708 a year on monthly Creator against $590 annual: $118 for the option to leave at any month. Our arithmetic.

What happens when the deletion completes

Kit's deletion article explains that once you request deletion you are logged out and cannot log back in, including into other Kit accounts where you are a team member, and that the account is deleted within 24 to 48 hours [24]. Export first: subscriber lists and the Subscribers page graph data are the two things Kit names [24]. A deleted account cannot be restored; to return you start a new one at the current price [4].

Deleting the account

  1. Export what you want to keep: subscribers and the Subscribers page graph data [24] [25].
  2. Go to Settings, then Account & Billing, then Account Deletion, and click Delete my Kit account [24].
  3. Type DELETE ACCOUNT, confirm, and enter your password [24].
  4. Kit logs you out and deletes the account "within 24 to 48 hours" [24].

Only the account owner can request deletion; team members see a message telling them to ask the owner [24]. Deleting also logs you out of other Kit accounts where you are a team member [24].

Before you delete: paid subscribers

If you sell subscriptions through Kit, decide what happens to them first. A subscriber who unsubscribes stops being charged [27], and refunds are issued from each subscriber's profile [29]. Moving paid subscribers to another platform depends on that platform: beehiiv's own guide says paid subscriptions managed through Kit and Stripe Express cannot be imported [47].

If Kit closes the account

Kit's Acceptable Use Policy reserves "the right to close an account at any time, including but not limited to inappropriate use" [21]. Three reviews in our corpus describe a closure, all negative [9]. Export your subscribers regularly so a closure never takes the list with it [25], and keep paid subscriptions in a Stripe account you control [30].

Readers and refunds from creators

If you bought from a creator who sells through Kit and want your money back, ask the creator first. Refunds are issued from the creator's Kit account, in full, and only for purchases made through Kit; purchases made on other platforms are refunded there [29]. Kit's billing refund policy covers what creators pay Kit, not what readers pay creators [4].

Cancelling when you sell subscriptions

A creator who sells paid newsletters on Kit and wants to stop should tell paying readers first, then cancel or refund each subscription from the readers' profiles, in full where a refund is given [29]. Moving the account to Free alone does not stop those subscriptions, because selling remains available on Free [6]. Deleting the account without that step leaves readers to discover the change from their bank statements.

The short version

Move to Free if you might return; delete only when you are sure; ask for any refund within 30 days; and deal with readers' paid subscriptions before either step.

Coming back later

If you cancel and return, you choose from the plans and prices in force at the time; a customer who left before October 2025 returns at the new prices [4]. An account moved to Free rather than deleted keeps its subscribers, tags, forms and archives, so returning means upgrading, not rebuilding [6]. A deleted account cannot be recovered [24].

A cancellation timeline, monthly plan

Date Action Money
1 May Monthly Creator renews at the 3,000 band $59 charged [2]
12 May Creator moves the account to Free Paid features continue to 31 May [6]
12 May Refund requested for the 1 May payment Within 30 days, so covered by the billing article [4]
1 June Account on Free; automations stop $0 [6]

Our illustration of the vendor's published rules. Had the creator waited until 2 June to ask, the May payment would have been outside the 30-day window.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund from Kit?+

Kit's billing article offers a full refund of payments made in the last 30 days, annual plans included; its terms are stricter, so ask in writing within 30 days.

## If you are thinking of cancelling over price

Kit's billing FAQ says its team can walk you through features you may not be using, and that nonprofit discounts carried over to the new prices [4]. Annual billing costs ten months' price for twelve [4]. Those three options, a lower band, annual billing and a discount if eligible, are worth checking before closing an account that took years to build.
