Yes. Kit is a legitimate company and a long-running email platform. It was founded in 2013 as ConvertKit, renamed itself Kit, and its founder still writes to customers under his own name about prices [10]. It publishes its prices, terms, refund policy and GDPR position. This page answers whether it is safe to use, as a creator and as a reader, from Kit's own pages and 100 recent Trustpilot reviews read on 9 October 2026.

The company

Kit's founder and CEO, Nathan Barry, explains in a public letter that he started the company in 2013, switched early from feature-based to subscriber-based pricing, and kept the original prices until 2025 [10]. The letter describes a company that once could not raise money because investors saw "no money in this", and grew with the creator economy. The pricing page claims more than 550,000 creators on the platform [11]; that is the vendor's figure.

Toolkit tip

Read both Trustpilot profiles.

## The rename

ConvertKit became Kit. The company still runs its WordPress plugin under the name "Kit (formerly ConvertKit)", published by Kit, with 4.8 stars from 90 ratings . Old Trustpilot reviews remain under the convertkit.com profile, which shows 1.9 from 67; the current kit.com profile shows 4.0 from 159 [9]. A buyer checking reputation should read both.

Payments and data

Kit's own plans are paid by card through Stripe, which runs a temporary $1 verification charge when a card is added or changed [4]. Sales through Kit also run on Stripe [30]. For data protection, Kit transfers EU, UK and Swiss personal data under the Data Privacy Framework or Standard Contractual Clauses, both included in its Data Processing Addendum [64].

⚠️
Watch out

Lists built from affiliate offers risk account closure.

## Kit checks its senders

A platform's legitimacy depends partly on who it lets send. Kit verifies every new account before sending is enabled: "We ask that all new accounts send us a link to their blog before we enable email sending." [7]. It asks for evidence that the sender is a real person who owns the domain and creates content people want, and may ask for open and click history [7]. It also recommends double opt-in, which is the default on its forms [65]. If you received an email from a Kit sender you did not sign up for, the sender passed this check and still mailed you; use the unsubscribe link and report it.

The price change, handled in public

How a company raises prices says something about it. Kit's founder announced the 2025 increase in a signed letter, explained the reasoning, and gave existing customers until their first billing date after 15 October 2025 [10] [4]. The billing FAQ added that discounts, including nonprofit discounts, would carry over, that plan limits and features would not change, and that customers who could not afford an annual renewal could switch to monthly [4]. Customers felt the increase, and some say so in reviews [9]; the process itself was disclosed openly.

Compliance and privacy

Kit's GDPR article explains that it transfers personal data from the EU, UK and Switzerland under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions, or under Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement, both included in its Data Processing Addendum [64]. Kit's terms state that it provides the service solely from the United States and may refuse or suspend use from unauthorised countries or regions [8].

What Kit does not allow

Kit's Acceptable Use Policy opens with "Kit is for creators and business owners." and lists what it calls inappropriate use [21]. Among the categories: purchased or scraped lists, disguised identity, online pharmacies, make-money-online and get-rich-quick schemes, and "CPA affiliate type sites or similar affiliate type of sites, network marketing sites" [21]. During verification, Kit says "we reserve the right to deny your account" [21].

Affiliate marketing is allowed in moderation. Kit's guidance is that "If 70-80% of your email content is about your own products, services, and information about who you are and what you do" and only around a fifth to a third concerns affiliate offers, the account is acceptable [23]. A newsletter made only of affiliate links is not a fit.

These rules explain the account closures in our review corpus. They also mean that a reader on a Kit list is, by Kit's rules, on a list built with permission.

What users say

Our sample of the 100 most recent kit.com reviews averages 4.17, above the 4.0 badge: 67 five-star, 15 four-star, 1 three-star, 2 two-star, 15 one-star [9]. GetApp shows 4.63 from 244. By theme:

Our coding of the corpus [9].

The complaints worth taking seriously

Account closures. Three reviews describe Kit closing an account; one quotes the message "we don't believe that our platform is the right fit for your business" [9]. Kit's Acceptable Use Policy and affiliate-marketing rules set out what it does not allow [21] [23]; read them before importing a list built from affiliate offers.

Support after the price rise. Negative support reviews describe long exchanges on technical questions after October 2025 [9].

Refund wording. The help centre promises a 30-day refund on all plans [4]; the terms say Kit "will not refund any Paid Services Fees already paid to us" on cancellation [8]. Ask within 30 days and cite the help centre.

A buyer's dispute. One reviewer bought a $200 service from a seller using Kit and could not get a refund from either side [9]. Kit is the platform, not the merchant; disputes with a creator's product go to the creator and the card issuer.

What reviewers praise

Two thirds of recent reviews are five-star [9]. Reviewers praise ease of use, templates and deliverability; one writes "Never had an issue with deliverability and the features allow me to do everything I need to do." [9]. Another moved from a competitor after five years and says "I'm so glad I did" [9]. Support, when it works, is described as fast and patient; 26 of the 38 support mentions are positive [9].

If you are a reader worried about an email

Kit is a platform used by hundreds of thousands of creators; an email sent through Kit comes from the creator, not from Kit. Every Kit sender passed account verification before sending [7]. If an email asks for a password or payment details you did not expect, treat it as phishing whatever platform sent it, and unsubscribe from any list you did not join.

Deliverability, explained by the vendor

Kit's deliverability guide describes what mailbox providers judge: whether a message is safe, whether most recipients want it, and whether this recipient wants it [66]. Sender reputation, it says, is like a credit score that providers keep private, and "the most important determining factor is the way that Subscribers engage" [66]. Kit recommends double opt-in on every form, and makes it the default [65], and recommends a verified sending domain with DMARC [67].

That is the standard advice, published plainly. It also explains why Kit verifies accounts before sending: one sender's bad list affects others on shared infrastructure.

What we would check before trusting Kit with a paid business

  1. Verification timing. Send the link on the first day; nothing sends until approval [7].
  2. List origin. Only permission-based lists; purchased or scraped lists breach the policy [21].
  3. Affiliate share. Keep affiliate content to a minority of each email [23].
  4. Refund wording. Note both the help centre's 30 days and the terms [4] [8].
  5. Exports. Export the list on a schedule [25].
  6. Stripe ownership. Sell through a Stripe account you control [30].

A business that passes those six checks has the ordinary risks of any email platform and no unusual ones.

Our verdict

Kit is a legitimate, long-established platform with unusually open billing documentation. Its risks are the common ones: account review, a price that can rise at renewal, and a refund promise that lives in the help centre rather than the contract.

The two Trustpilot profiles, read together

The convertkit.com profile's 1.9 from 67 and the kit.com profile's 4.0 from 159 are not two opinions of two products [9]. They are one company's reviews split by a rename, with older complaints left under the old name. Read recent kit.com reviews for the product as it is.

The terms in brief

Kit's Terms of Service contain the clauses a buyer should know before paying [8]:

The help centre's 30-day refund policy is more generous than the terms [4]. Where they differ, the help centre describes what Kit does in practice; the terms describe what it is bound to do.

For readers who pay a Kit creator

If you subscribe to a paid newsletter or product sold through Kit, cancelling stops future charges and you keep access until the next billing date [27]. Unsubscribing from the creator's list also stops the charges [27]. Refunds are the creator's decision and are issued in full when given [29]. Payments run through Stripe [30].

Frequently asked questions

Is Kit the same company as ConvertKit?+

Yes. ConvertKit, founded in 2013, renamed itself Kit.

## Is it safe to build a business on Kit?

The signals are good: a company in business since 2013, published prices with worked billing examples, a refund window in the help centre, verification of senders, data exports at any time [25], and account deletion on request within 24 to 48 hours [24]. The risks are the ordinary ones of any email platform: an account review if a list was not opted in, and a price that can rise at renewal, as it did in 2025 [4].

Our composite score for Kit is 3.79, second in the email category, with its best marks for sentiment and ease of use.
