The short answer: not free, but free to test
Is SE Ranking free? No. There is no free plan, and long-term free use is not possible. What SE Ranking offers instead is a 14-day trial of the full platform that needs no credit card and cannot turn into a paid plan by itself, plus about 40 free single-check tools on its website that you can use a handful of times a day without an account. After that, the platform costs from $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed annually [1]. That is the trade.
This guide walks through each free option as of October 12, 2026: what the trial gives you and what it holds back, which free tools are worth your time and where they stop, the smaller free extras around the product, and the honest ways to bring the paid bill down. If you already know you will pay, our SE Ranking pricing guide covers every plan in detail.
On day one, create a project with your actual keywords, engines and locations, so the rest of the trial tests SE Ranking on your own data.
Why there is no free plan
SE Ranking says so itself: "SE Ranking doesn't have a free version, but it offers everyone a 14-day free trial". That makes it the odd one out among the big suites. Semrush, by comparison, has a free plan with 10 tracked keywords, and Ahrefs has a free tier for verified sites. SE Ranking chose a generous trial instead of a permanent free account. The upside is that the trial is the full product, not a cut-down version, so you judge the tool on real data rather than on a teaser. The downside is just as clear. When the 14 days end, so does free access, and you either pay or go back to the single-check tools.
The 14-day trial: no card, no surprise charge
How long it lasts, and why the card matters
The trial lasts 14 days. The help center says that after it, you will need to subscribe to the service to continue, and there is no published way to extend it. Plan your testing before you sign up. The pricing page also says no credit card is required for the trial, which is unusual among the big SEO suites. Semrush's 7-day trial bills automatically when it ends unless canceled, and Ahrefs offers no trial at all. With SE Ranking you can test the whole platform without any payment details on file.
It does not turn into a paid plan
SE Ranking is explicit on this point: "SE Ranking's free trial does not renew into a paid subscription, and you will not be charged when it ends." [2] The trial expires automatically and your access becomes inactive. Nothing to cancel. No reminder to set. If you do decide to buy, you choose a plan from the Billing page; the trial account is then deactivated and the subscription takes over. Either way, export anything you want to keep before the trial ends, in case you do not buy.
MCP access, keyword database expansion, extra client seats and limit purchases are not available on the trial. Testing the MCP server means paying or asking for a demo.
The terms you accept on day one
Starting a trial means accepting the Terms of Service and the Agency Pack terms. The Terms are governed by California law. Read the refund clause before the trial ends, because after the first payment nothing is refunded except for poor service. In practice, that turns the trial into your only real refund window: the 14 days are when you find out whether SE Ranking fits, and the first payment is when that decision becomes final.
What the trial includes, and what it leaves out
The trial's limits
The trial gives you 10 projects, 3 manager seats, 750 keywords tracked daily, 20 AI prompts a day, AI research on 3 domains, 10 research reports a day, three months of history and 10,000 audit pages [3]. It also includes 100,000 API credits with access to every endpoint, the Agency Pack and AI Search. Against the cheapest paid plan, the trial is smaller on tracking and audits but larger on seats and API credits, as the table shows.
| Trial | Core | |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords tracked daily | 750 | 2,000 |
| AI prompts daily | 20 | 100 |
| Manager seats | 3 | 1 |
| Audit pages | 10,000 | 250,000 a month |
| API credits | 100,000 | 25,000 a month |
| MCP | No | Yes |
What you cannot test
Keyword database expansion, MCP access, additional client seats and extra limit purchases are not available on the trial. That matters most for anyone who wants to connect SE Ranking to an AI assistant. If you want to test the MCP server with Claude or ChatGPT, you will have to pay or ask for a demo. The same goes for anyone who expects to buy more keywords or extra client seats: those purchases only open once you pay, so size your trial project to the limits in the table above rather than to the account you plan to run later.
Agencies and developers
The trial includes the Agency Pack: white label, client seats, the Lead Generator and scheduled reports. Agencies should set up their branded domain during the 14 days, because afterwards the pack is sold only with an annual plan. Developers have a separate route. The API package is available as a standalone product with no active SE Ranking subscription required, and its own 14-day trial includes 100,000 free API credits. After that, the standalone plan starts at $179 a month, billed annually. Our SE Ranking API guide covers that path in depth.
SE Ranking's free Google location changer lets you search as if you were somewhere else, which is the easiest way to compare its rankings with Google by hand.
How to spend the 14 days
A trial this short rewards a plan, and nothing happens automatically when it ends, so the schedule is entirely up to you. The order below puts the slow tests first. Ranking comparisons need several days of data before they mean anything, while an audit, two competitor checks and one client report fit comfortably into the second week. It leaves the decision to the last full day, with time to export your data if the answer is no:
- Day one: create one real project with your actual keywords, engines and locations.
- Days two to seven: compare SE Ranking's rankings with Google in an incognito window, using the free Google location changer to search as if you were somewhere else.
- Second week: run an audit, research two competitors and build one client report.
- Day thirteen: decide. Not later.
The free tools you can use without an account
What they cover, and the daily caps
Separately from the trial, SE Ranking's site offers free tools that need no account. They cover rank checks, keyword research, traffic, backlinks, domain data, content and technical SEO [4]. Most allow five uses a day. The AI visibility checker gives five free checks per day, and the rank checker and the AI writing tools show five attempts a day. The keyword tool is stricter, with three free checks for users without accounts. These are snapshots, not tracking, but several of them are genuinely useful.
Rankings, keywords and traffic
The Google rank checker shows where a site ranks for a keyword in Google's organic results, desktop or mobile, in a chosen country and city. Results are limited until you sign up for the top 100. It is useful for a quick look at a few keywords. Not for tracking. The keyword tool returns volume, difficulty, CPC and intent across 188 geo databases, and for more than three checks the 14-day trial unlocks the full Keyword Research tool.
Separate checkers handle keyword difficulty and volume, and volume in SE Ranking is based on Google Keyword Planner data. Use them to sanity-check a few target keywords; for lists of hundreds, the trial's Keyword Research is the tool. The website traffic checker estimates organic and paid traffic, top keywords and pages, and traffic cost for any domain, and marks Google algorithm updates on the graph. Its estimates come from SE Ranking's own model, so treat them as relative signals.
AI search tools
This is where the free set is strongest. The AI visibility checker compares a domain with up to five competitors across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, five checks a day. An answer engine optimization tool adds five more free checks a day on how a brand appears in AI answers, and a ChatGPT location changer shows how answers differ by country or city. The fan-out extractor shows the search queries ChatGPT runs behind the scenes when it browses to answer a prompt, and you can test up to 10 prompts at once. For content teams trying to understand AI search, it is one of the most useful free tools on the site.
Content, technical and domain checks
Content tools include a word counter, a keyword density checker, a title and meta description checker, and AI rewriters and generators. The rewriters allow 200 words at most per use, five uses a day. Fine for a headline. Not for an article. The People Also Ask tool pulls the questions Google shows for a keyword, which helps writers plan FAQ sections and headings. Like the other free tools, it gives a snapshot rather than tracking.
Technical tools cover a robots.txt generator and tester, a speed test, a mobile-friendly test and a redirect checker that scans up to 30 URLs at a time. A website authority checker returns SE Ranking's Domain Trust score, its own metric, so it will not match Ahrefs' or Moz's scores. Domain tools add age, expiration, WHOIS, IP, subdomain and CMS lookups, though the domain age checker's page contradicts itself on how many URLs one scan takes.
Where the free tools stop
Free tools give single snapshots. They do not track rankings over time, store projects, run full-site audits, monitor backlinks or send reports. For any of that you need the trial or a paid plan. The gap is easy to underestimate. A small business owner who checks 20 keywords by hand with the free rank checker, five a day, needs four days for one pass and never sees a trend, while the cheapest plan tracks 2,000 keywords every day and keeps the history.
| Need | Free tools | 14-day trial |
|---|---|---|
| Account required | No | Yes, no card |
| Daily limit | About 5 uses per tool | Plan limits |
| Rank tracking over time | No | 750 keywords daily |
| Full-site audit | No | 10,000 pages |
| Reports and exports | No | Yes |
The free tools give single snapshots with no stored projects, history, full-site audits or reports. Tracking needs the trial or a paid plan.
The smaller free extras
SE Ranking publishes a blog, webinars, a YouTube channel and original research studies, free to everyone, and the free tools page adds SEO templates for planning and tracking work. These are worth reading before you buy, because they show how SE Ranking's own team approaches SEO. The Academy is a different case. It is free only for users with an active subscription, paid or trial, which means you can take the beginner course and the certification exam during the 14 days; the exam needs a score of 80% or more. The iOS and Android apps are free for SE Ranking customers, but they need an account with access, so they are not a free way in.
Two more extras apply only in narrow cases. Paying customers who did not try Local Marketing during their trial get a second chance: they can use the tool to its full potential for 30 days from the moment of adding the first location, and every plan also includes three locations. Schools and nonprofits may find a route through the Educational Partnership Program that SE Ranking's Terms mention, but the pricing page lists no nonprofit or student discount, so ask the team directly.
Lowering the bill once you pay
The cheapest paid path
The cheapest plan is Core at $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed annually, which is $1,238.40 a year. Start monthly after the trial, then switch to annual once the setup works. Annual saves $309.60 a year on Core. API credits follow a similar logic. There is no free API tier, but after the trial, credits come with paid plans or through the pay-as-you-go Wallet, from $50 for 250,000 credits that never expire.
Affiliate income and coupons
The affiliate program pays 30% on every sale from your referral link, including later renewals by the same customer. A paid subscription is not required to join; a trial account or even an expired account is enough. Bloggers and consultants who recommend tools can offset their own subscription this way. Four referred customers on monthly Core earn 30% of $516, or $154.80 a month, which more than covers a monthly Core plan of your own. The checkout also has a coupon field, but affiliates may only promote coupons generated by SE Ranking. Treat coupon-site codes with care, and never pay before the trial ends just to use one.
Free alternatives, and whether SE Ranking is worth paying for
For free long-term use, Semrush's free plan tracks 10 keywords, Ahrefs Free covers sites you can verify, and Moz offers a free community account with limited access. None of them is a full suite, but together they cover occasional checks. Our SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison shows how the two paid suites differ once you outgrow free.
For anyone tracking more than a few dozen keywords, SE Ranking is worth paying for. Core's 2,000 daily keywords cost under 7 cents each a month, it keeps the history the free tools never store, and the trial lets you prove the value before you pay anything. If you only need occasional checks, the free tools and a rival's free plan may be enough. The free tools will tell you quickly whether you have outgrown them.

Use the free tools for quick checks and AI search snapshots, use the trial for a real decision with your own keywords, and pay only once your own data has convinced you. If you do pay, start monthly, keep the refund clause in mind, and move to annual billing once the setup has earned it.
