The short answer: free to look, paid to work

Partly. Serpstat gives away more than you might expect: a Freemium account with no card, a set of free single-purpose checkers, a browser extension that is free to install and a free tier of LLM Brand Monitor. The full platform still costs $50 a month or more [1]. Freemium caps you at 10 searches a day, 10 results per report and 10 pages to audit [2], which is enough to look up a competitor or two. It is not enough to run SEO for a site. For real work you need a paid plan or the 7-day trial.

This guide sorts out what is free, what is a trial and what sits behind a paywall, as of 13 October 2026. The distinction matters here, because Serpstat uses all three ideas on its own pages and does not always keep them apart. Only one of them can end with a charge on your card.

Free tools, Freemium and the trial are three different things

Free tools are public checkers on Serpstat's site that anyone can run ten times a day. Freemium is a registered account with no card and small limits. The trial page lists it as limited access next to the trial offers, and the support page describes it as freemium access with limited functionality. You sign up and stay on it. No clock runs. The trial is different in kind: seven days of a paid plan that needs a card and renews into a charge [3]. Do not confuse them. The rest of this page takes each in turn, starting with the account most people land on.

What a Freemium account actually gives you

Here is how Freemium compares with Individual, the cheapest paid plan:

Limit Freemium Individual
Searches per day 10 100
Results per report 10 2,000
Pages to audit 10 30,000
Rank Tracker unclear 10,000 checks a month
API, AI tools, batch analysis no no

Ten searches, ten rows, ten pages

A search is one look at a domain, keyword or backlink profile, so ten a day lets you check your site, three rivals and six keywords. The support page says credits are spent each time you start a request, move between reports, or sort or filter a report. Sorting eats searches. Every report then shows only its first 10 rows: for a competitor with thousands of ranking keywords, you see ten. That is a preview of the data, not the data. The audit stops at 10 pages, with one project for Audit, which covers a home page and a few templates. A 50-page brochure site already needs the trial.

Does Freemium include Rank Tracker?

Serpstat's own pages disagree. The trial-free page lists access to Rank Tracker under Freemium. The trial FAQ page lists no access to Rank Tracker. The support page says the trial gives you access to more tools, naming AI, the API and Rank Tracker, which implies Freemium lacks them. Two pages say no. Assume no. If tracking your positions is the reason you are looking at Serpstat, treat it as a paid feature and plan around the trial instead.

What Freemium leaves out, and how accounts end up there

Freemium has no API, no AI tools, no batch analysis and no extra team seats; MCP depends on the API, so it is out too, and JavaScript rendering and keyword lists start only on Team. It is a reading account. Not a working one. You can pick it at sign-up by skipping the trial, a canceled trial switches to it when the trial period ends, and a failed renewal is downgraded to it as well. When a paid plan ends, Serpstat keeps data for 2 to 100 months by plan, then deletes every project except the first one created. Export the rest before retention ends, which is two months on Individual.

The free checkers anyone can run

Serpstat's free tools page lists a competitor checker, a Domain Rank checker, an AI content checker and a domain overview, each available ten times a day for free [4]. It also lists a SERP volatility checker and the browser extension. Rank Tracker and the bulk traffic checker appear on the same page, but both need the trial, so the page promises a little more than it gives. Serpstat's llms.txt adds two narrow technical utilities that need no plan: an IndexNow submission tool and a search engine IP lookup that checks whether a crawler is really Googlebot or Bingbot.

Sizing up a rival

The competitor analysis page lets you check website data for free ten times daily and shows organic traffic, keywords and how they have moved. The domain overview gives a snapshot of traffic trends and total keywords. Together they are enough to size up a rival, though not enough to study one. The Domain Rank checker returns DR, backlinks and linking sites, also ten times a day. Serpstat's DR scores authority from 0 to 100 using the sites that link to a domain and the sites that link to those. It works well as a quick sanity check before you buy a link.

Keyword lookups

The keyword research page has a box for up to five keywords at once that returns volume, difficulty, intent and AI Overview presence. Past ten lookups a day, it points you to the 7-day trial. Ten lookups of five keywords is fifty keywords a day, which is useful for quick checks. The keyword difficulty page runs the same five-keyword box. Difficulty is scored 1 to 100 and built from backlinks, URL complexity and commercial intent. Its FAQ points to the trial for more and quotes $69 for Individual and $129 for Team afterward, figures that match the pricing page.

Traffic, volatility and AI detection

The traffic checker estimates any site's traffic, and the free account covers 10 websites a day; bulk checks of up to 5,000 domains need the trial and Team. The estimate comes from Serpstat's machine-learning model. It is not your analytics. The SERP volatility checker shows Google's ranking turbulence over the last 30 days and needs no plan, so use it when your rankings jump and you want to know whether everyone's did. The AI content checker gives a confidence score for AI-written text, ten times a day, while the paid version sits among the AI content tools from Team up. Detectors guess. Treat the score as a hint.

The browser extension: free to install, not to use

The Website SEO Checker extension works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera and shows on-page SEO, domain traffic, visibility and backlinks. Its product page says it is available on all plans, including free users after signing up, with a limited number of credits. The help article of May 5, 2026 disagrees: the extension needs API credits, and API access starts on Team. The newer page wins. On Freemium, expect little or nothing to load, so test it during the Team trial instead. Our Serpstat Chrome extension guide covers what it does once it works.

LLM Brand Monitor has its own free tier

LLM Brand Monitor, Serpstat's AI visibility product, has a Free plan with 10 checks and 2 projects a month, and the product page says no card is required. It runs separately from the SEO plans. A check is one query run against your selected models, so five queries across four models use 20 checks. Ten free checks therefore cover two queries across five models, or ten queries on one model. Pick your models carefully. The free budget amounts to one modest AI audit a month, and our LLM Brand Monitor guide covers the paid tier.

The 7-day trial: what it gives and what it costs

The trial covers Individual or Team for seven days, and Serpstat says the Team trial gives full access to all the tools of a Team plan. It needs a card, and it is the only way to try the API, MCP and batch analysis without paying. Watch the prices, though. The trial-free page still says Individual costs $59 a month after the trial and Team $119, and the trial FAQ repeats both, while the free rank tracker page and the pricing page show $69 and $129. Budget for the higher numbers. Our Serpstat pricing guide walks through every plan.

Individual or Team, and why there is no Agency trial

The Individual trial bills $69 a month after 7 days and includes 2,000 rank checks and 5 Rank Tracker projects, with no API, AI tools or batch analysis. That is a narrow test. The Team trial bills $129 a month afterward and includes 10,000 rank checks, unlimited Rank Tracker projects, and the API, AI tools and batch analysis, with 5,000 batch credits on trial. That covers a week of real testing. Agency cannot be trialed at all: its card offers only Subscribe, and the trial links in the page code cover Individual, Team and Team x2 only. To test white label, ask sales for a demo rather than buying blind at $410 a month.

The card, the $1 check and the renewal

Serpstat asks for a card for verification, charges $1 and returns it within half an hour [1]. The card details go to a payment processor, and the trial page says Serpstat does not store them. Auto-renewal turns on with the trial, and the plan price is withdrawn automatically after 7 days; on Team that is $129. The trial page promises a reminder before the trial ends. Do not rely on it. A week passes quickly, and the charge lands whether or not you have opened the account since the first day.

⚠️
Watch out
The trial renews into a charge

Auto-renewal turns on with the trial and the plan price is withdrawn after 7 days, $129 on Team. Switch off renewal in Settings or Bills the day you sign up.

Cancelling, and what happens if you forget

To cancel, go to Settings and turn off Automatic renewal. You keep access until the trial ends and then drop to Freemium. The Bills section has the same toggle and asks you to type a confirmation word. Do it the day you sign up. If you miss it, the trial FAQ is reassuring: "If you forget to cancel the trial and your card gets charged, please reach out to our support team. We will quickly process the refund." The cancellation terms, however, call payments non-refundable, so the refund rests on goodwill. Write to support at once.

Other free routes: courses, perks and old lifetime deals

Universities, schools and courses that teach SEO, PPC, SMM or content marketing can join Serpstat's education program, and every student and lecturer on the course receives their own free account. Those accounts reach 50+ tools plus the Academy and the Knowledge Base. Access lasts for the period the course needs, from 3 to 28 days, and teachers should apply three to five days before the course starts. Afterward, students can buy a plan on special partner conditions. It is short, but it is enough for a module.

Paying users also get partner discounts on other tools, such as 10% off Netpeak Spider and Checker, 20% off Visme Premium and 15% off Snov.io monthly plans, though perks do not reduce Serpstat's own price. Lifetime access is a different story. Serpstat sold it through deal sites in the past, and a TrustRadius snippet mentions an AppSumo deal, but one Trustpilot reviewer says a lifetime plan stopped working and now asks for an upgrade. No lifetime plan is on the pricing page today. Treat old deals as gone.

The API and MCP are not free

The API starts on Team. Serpstat's API page says its methods are available from the Team subscription and can be tried on the Team free trial, and Team includes 200,000 API credits a month. The browser extension runs on the same credits. The MCP server follows the same logic: connecting is free, but using it is not, because every MCP query calls Serpstat's API and uses credits based on the method called. Without Team-level API credits there is nothing to spend. New users can test MCP on the 7-day trial. After that it is $129 a month.

How Serpstat's free options compare

The comparison depends on what you want from a free account:

Who can stay free, and who should pay

Freemium suits a site owner who checks a competitor now and then, a student between courses, or an SEO who wants Serpstat's DR and traffic numbers for a quick look. It does not suit anyone tracking rankings or auditing a site. Ten is too few. If you want to stay free anyway, combine everything: the public checkers for traffic, DR, competitors, domain overviews and AI detection, ten each a day, plus Freemium's ten searches, give you about 60 free lookups a day, and LLM Brand Monitor Free adds an AI audit.

Individual costs $50 a month billed annually and multiplies every Freemium limit: 100 searches a day instead of 10, 2,000 results instead of 10 and 30,000 audit pages instead of 10, plus 10,000 rank checks a month. That is ten to three thousand times more, and for one site owner it is the natural step up. Anyone who needs daily rank tracking, a full audit, exports or more than ten rows needs Individual at least. Anyone who needs the API, MCP, batch analysis or a colleague needs Team. That is most working SEOs.

💡
Toolkit tip
Take the Team trial, not Individual

The Team trial includes the API, AI tools, batch analysis and 10,000 rank checks. It is the only way to test those without paying.

If you lean toward paying, run the Team trial as a structured test:

Three points we could not confirm. Whether Freemium includes Rank Tracker remains open, because two Serpstat pages say opposite things. We could not find the price of credit top-ups anywhere on Serpstat's pages. And a refund after a forgotten trial depends on support goodwill rather than on the written terms. Ask in writing before you rely on any of them.

Frequently asked questions

Is Serpstat free to use?+

Partly. Freemium gives 10 searches a day with no card; full features need a paid plan or the 7-day trial.

Does the Serpstat trial need a credit card?+

Yes. A $1 verification charge is taken and returned within half an hour, and the plan bills after 7 days unless renewal is switched off.

Does Serpstat Freemium include Rank Tracker?+

Serpstat's own pages disagree: one lists access, two others suggest none. Assume it does not and test Rank Tracker on the trial.

Is the Serpstat API free?+

No. API access starts on Team, which includes 200,000 API credits a month, and MCP queries spend the same credits.

Is there a free Serpstat account for students?+

Yes. Courses that teach SEO, PPC, SMM or content marketing can get every student and lecturer a free account for 3 to 28 days.

What happens when my Serpstat trial or plan ends?+

A canceled trial drops to Freemium at the end of the period. After a paid plan lapses, data is kept for 2 to 100 months by plan, then every project except the first one created is deleted.

The bottom line

Serpstat is free in the way a showroom is free: you can look, ten times a day. The public checkers add real value at no cost, the education program is a genuine free route for classes, and LLM Brand Monitor's free tier gives a small AI audit each month. For anything beyond a glance, the honest choice is the Team trial, with renewal switched off on day one and a decision made by day seven. Budget for the current prices, not the old ones on the trial pages, and remember that the API, MCP and the extension's real use all start on Team.
