Why people look past Serpstat
Serpstat is cheap, tracks rankings daily on every plan and includes an API and MCP from the Team plan, which costs $129 a month or $100 a month billed annually for three users [1]. That is a hard bundle to beat. So the reasons people leave are rarely about price. Three come up most. Serpstat's terms call payments non-refundable [2]. Its credits are split by module and reset every cycle, which makes the monthly math harder than it looks. And its own pages disagree on how big its backlink index is, giving 529 billion links on one page and 1.1 trillion on another.
If none of that bothers you, stay. If one of them does, the tools below each fix a different problem. We kept only tools that cover keyword research, rank tracking and site audit in one subscription and whose pricing pages we could read in US dollars from the US, in October 2026. Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Mangools get the full treatment. Moz, Ubersuggest and SpyFu get shorter notes, because each answers a narrower question. For Serpstat's own plans and credits in detail, see our Serpstat pricing guide.
Run the same domain and keywords through two trials in the same week. With Serpstat Team and SE Ranking Core only $3.20 a month apart, the data you trust should decide.
The short list at a glance
The quick version: Semrush for the biggest toolkit, Ahrefs for backlinks, SE Ranking for the closest price and a friendlier trial, Mangools for simplicity, Moz for its metrics brand and SpyFu for PPC history. One of them will fit what Serpstat does not. The table puts the four main rivals next to Serpstat Team on the plan a small team would actually compare, at month-to-month prices. Three of the four open at the same $129 as Serpstat Team, so the real differences sit in seats, tracking frequency and API room rather than in the headline price. Serpstat's keyword figure is our arithmetic from its 50,000 monthly position checks.
| Serpstat | Semrush | Ahrefs | SE Ranking | Moz Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan compared | Team | SEO | Lite | Core | Standard |
| Month-to-month | $129 | $139 | $129 | $129 | $99 |
| Users included | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Keywords tracked | about 1,667 daily | 500 daily | 750 weekly | 2,000 daily | 300 |
| Free trial | 7 days, card | 7 days | none listed | 14 days, no card | yes |
Semrush: the bigger ecosystem, at a higher seat price
Semrush combines SEO and AI visibility in one plan and sells specialist toolkits on top: Traffic and Market, Local, Content, Social, Advertising and AI PR. No other tool here has that range, and it also has the deepest free plan. It costs more for every extra seat, and that is where Serpstat pulls ahead. One caution before you compare: Serpstat's own comparison page still uses Semrush's old Guru plan at $208 a month, while Semrush now sells SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced. Read vendor comparisons with care.
What it costs and what it tracks
Semrush SEO costs $139 a month or $117.33 billed annually; Starter $199 or $165.17; Pro+ $299 or $248.17; Advanced $549 or $455.67. Annual billing saves up to 17%, against 27.5% on Serpstat Individual. In yearly terms, the cheapest Semrush plan costs $1,407.96, so Serpstat Team, with three users and an API, undercuts it by about $208. The SEO plan monitors 5 websites and tracks 500 keywords daily; Pro+ tracks 1,500 and Advanced 5,000. Serpstat Team tracks about 1,667 a day, so Semrush tracks fewer keywords per dollar.
Seats, the API and the free plan
Additional Semrush users start at $45 a month, so three people on Semrush SEO cost at least $229 a month against $129 on Serpstat Team. Over a year, two extra seats add $1,080, nearly a full year of Serpstat Team billed annually. Semrush lists MCP access from Starter at $199 and API data integration on Advanced at $549, while Serpstat includes both on Team. The free tier is where Semrush wins: a free account gives "10 reports per day across all vital tools", one demo project, 10 tracked keywords and a 100-page audit. Serpstat Freemium gives 10 searches a day and audits 10 pages.
Pick Semrush when
Pick Semrush if you need local, social or advertising toolkits in the same account, or if one person runs thousands of lookups a day: its FAQ gives SEO users 3,000 Analytics searches a day, against 100 on Serpstat Individual. Pick Serpstat if you need an API or MCP without paying $199 to $549, three seats at $129, or more tracked keywords per dollar. Our Serpstat vs Semrush comparison goes deeper.
Ahrefs: backlinks first, rankings once a week
Ahrefs says its data comes from the second-most active crawler on the web, and its brand is built on backlinks. Its plans include Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker, Brand Radar and API and MCP access [3]. Lite costs $129 a month, Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499 with an annual commitment. Paying annually saves up to 17%, and the FAQ says "We never run discounts." List price is the price.
The weak point is rank tracking. The pricing table lists weekly updates on all four plans, with 750 keywords on Lite, 2,000 on Standard and 5,000 on Advanced, while Serpstat updates daily on every plan. Weekly tracking is not useless, since monthly client reports rarely need more. But it cannot show the day a ranking dropped after a deploy or a Google update. That day-level view is what Serpstat sells at the same $129. For daily rankings, Ahrefs is the wrong tool.
Seats are the other gap. Every Ahrefs plan includes one user. Lite adds up to 2 more at $40 a month each, Standard up to 5 at $60 and Advanced up to 10 at $80. Three people on Lite cost $209 a month. For an agency of five, Ahrefs Standard plus four extra users reaches $489 a month, while Serpstat Team x2 covers six users for $209 on monthly billing, a gap of $280 a month or $3,360 a year by our arithmetic.
Where Ahrefs still wins
Ahrefs includes API and MCP access even on Lite, with a limit of 100 rows per request, rising to 250 on Standard and 500 on Advanced. Serpstat's API starts on Team with 200,000 credits a month. Test both on your real calls. Ahrefs Free covers your own verified site, and Starter costs $29 a month for keyword and competitor lookups. Pick Ahrefs if backlink research is your main job and you trust its crawler over Serpstat's mixed index claims. Pick Serpstat for daily tracking, three included seats, and keyword clustering and PPC research inside the plan. Annual Team costs $90 a year less than annual Lite.
Ahrefs updates rank tracking weekly on every plan, so it cannot show the day a ranking dropped. If you need daily positions, look at Serpstat or SE Ranking.
SE Ranking: the closest match
SE Ranking is Serpstat's nearest rival on price and features: daily rank tracking, an audit, research tools, an API and MCP. Core costs $129 a month or $103.20 billed annually, Growth $279 or $223.20, and Enterprise is quoted; annual billing saves 20% [4]. Serpstat Team is $100 a month billed annually, just $3.20 a month apart. Over a year, the two land within $40 of each other, $1,238.40 for Core against $1,200 for Team. The choice comes down to seats, API volume and trial terms, not price.
Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily and includes 10 projects, one manager seat, 25,000 API credits a month and MCP access. Serpstat Team tracks about 1,667 keywords daily, with unlimited projects, three users and 200,000 API credits, eight times as many. So SE Ranking tracks more and Serpstat gives more API room. For heavier data needs, SE Ranking sells a standalone API plan from $179 a month on annual billing, while Serpstat routes larger API and dataset deals through sales. Both have an exit for developers who outgrow the bundled credits.
The trial is SE Ranking's clearest edge. It offers a free 14-day trial with no credit card, while Serpstat's trial is seven days and needs a card and a $1 check. Both call payments non-refundable. Extra manager seats start at $16, so three users on Core cost $161 a month, still more than Serpstat Team. Pick SE Ranking for the card-free trial, more tracked keywords and cheap white label. Pick Serpstat for API credits, unlimited projects, three included seats and its Amazon and Perplexity keyword suggestions.
Mangools: the simple, cheaper toolkit
Mangools sells KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler in one subscription, and it suits bloggers and small sites more than agencies. Its plans data lists Basic at $49 a month, Premium at $69 and Agency at $129, with annual plans at $358.80, $538.80 and $1,078.80 a year. Annual Basic works out at $29.90 a month, cheaper than Serpstat Individual's $50. On annual billing, the plans we priced here run from Mangools Basic at $358.80 to Serpstat Individual at $600 and Ahrefs Lite at $1,290.
What the extra $241.20 buys at Serpstat is the point. Mangools' tool menu lists no site audit tool, and it tracks rankings with weekly updates, daily only on the Agency plan. Serpstat bundles an audit, clustering and PPC research, and tracks daily from $50 a month billed annually. Pick Mangools if you run a blog, need simple keyword research and SERP analysis, want a lower annual price, or find credit pools confusing. Pick Serpstat if you audit sites, track daily, cluster keywords, need an API or work as a team. Mangools is a toolkit. Serpstat is a platform.
Moz Pro, Ubersuggest and SpyFu: narrower picks
Moz Pro, for Domain Authority
Moz Pro is known for Domain Authority and its MozBar, and its pricing page bundles SEO tools with AI visibility features such as tracked prompts in four AI models. Standard costs $99 a month or $79 billed yearly, Medium $179 or $143, Large $299 or $239, and Moz also mentions a $49 entry-level plan for a single website. Standard includes 1 user, 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords and 400,000 crawled pages a month; Medium adds a second user and 1,500 keywords. The yearly Standard price is framed as $950 for the first year. Pick Moz if clients ask for Domain Authority by name or you want prompt tracking inside the SEO plan. Otherwise, Moz costs more for less.
Ubersuggest, the budget brand
Ubersuggest, from Neil Patel, sells Individual, Business and Enterprise plans with a lifetime option, plus AI writing and AI visibility. Individual covers 1 project, 150 searches a day and 125 tracked keywords; Business 7 projects and 300 searches; Enterprise 15 projects and 900 searches. Tracking runs weekly, up to 300 keywords per project, and audits crawl 1,000 to 10,000 pages a week. Serpstat Individual audits 30,000 pages a month. Ubersuggest served us euro prices even when asked for the US market, and we do not compare euros with dollars. Compare limits, not prices.
SpyFu, for PPC history
SpyFu focuses on competitors' paid and organic keywords and ad history, and claims years of historical data across 38 countries. It is a research tool more than a full SEO suite, though it has added an AI site audit. Its home page puts membership from $33 a month with unlimited data and downloads, and it advertises a 30-day refund guarantee, which stands out against Serpstat's terms. Pick SpyFu if you live in Google Ads. Serpstat has PPC research too, but for SpyFu it is the whole product.
Matching the alternative to the job
Most buyers need one thing more than the rest, so it helps to sort the field by job. For daily tracking, Serpstat and SE Ranking both track daily from their entry plans, Semrush does too but only 500 keywords on SEO, and Ahrefs and Ubersuggest track weekly. For backlinks, Ahrefs, whose crawler and index are its product, though Moz claims a 40 trillion link explorer. Test the same domain in each. For an API, Serpstat Team's 200,000 credits at $129 work out to about 1,550 credits per dollar, against about 194 for SE Ranking Core, an eightfold gap. Ahrefs offers API access on Lite with row limits, and Semrush keeps API integration on Advanced.
For MCP, Serpstat's server has 63 tools and works in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI and Cursor; Semrush and Ahrefs offer MCP too, but Serpstat is the cheapest. For AI visibility, Semrush leads with AI search tracking on every paid plan and a 50-prompt daily quota from Starter, while SE Ranking sells an AI Search add-on, Ahrefs has Brand Radar and Serpstat sells LLM Brand Monitor separately, from free. For a single site, start with Ahrefs Free and pay when you outgrow it. For refunds, SpyFu alone advertises a guarantee.
Agencies need their own math. Serpstat Team x2 covers six users for $169 a month billed annually, which makes it the cheapest route for a five-person agency. That flips only when white label is mandatory. SE Ranking Core plus its Agency Pack costs about $172 a month on annual billing, while Serpstat's cheapest white-label option is Agency at $410, more than twice as much. Unbranded client reports cost far more at Serpstat.
Semrush Free, Ahrefs Free and Serpstat Freemium do not overlap much. Use them together before you pay for anything.
The cost per seat, per keyword and per trial day
On annual billing, the cost per user is $33.33 on Serpstat Team, $117.33 on Semrush SEO, $107.50 on Ahrefs Lite, $103.20 on SE Ranking Core and $79 on Moz Standard, by our arithmetic. Serpstat is the cheapest per seat by far. The gap widens with headcount, because Serpstat bundles seats into the plan while Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking charge per extra user. Per daily tracked keyword, the picture is closer: about 5 cents a month on SE Ranking Core, 6 cents on Serpstat Team and 23 cents on Semrush SEO. Ahrefs Lite costs 14 cents, for weekly updates. SE Ranking edges it.
Trials matter more than usual here. SE Ranking gives 14 days with no card, Serpstat 7 days with a card and a $1 check, and Semrush seven days with a nominal card check refunded at once; Ahrefs points site owners to Ahrefs Free instead. Because Serpstat calls payments non-refundable, its seven trial days are the only risk-free window. Buyers who cannot test the API, audits and rank tracking within a week should choose a rival with a longer trial.
Switching in either direction
Leaving Serpstat takes a little planning. Export rank history and audit reports first, because exports stay in Latest reports for 60 days. Then switch off renewal in Bills and email support 15 days ahead. Serpstat keeps your data for 2 to 100 months depending on the plan. Moving to Serpstat is simpler: export your rankings from the old tool, then use the Import Position History tab, which detects Semrush and Ahrefs files, and Serpstat's team says it helps transfer history once you buy. Either way, run both tools in parallel for a week.
Serpstat's terms call payments non-refundable, so its 7-day trial is the only risk-free window. Test the API, audits and rank tracking inside it.
