No. Zendesk has no free plan, and nothing stays free once the trial ends. What you get instead is a 14-day trial with no credit card, usually on Suite Professional, for up to 5 people including you, plus one 14-day extension if your trial is eligible. Zendesk's pricing page lists the cheapest paid step, Support Team, at $19 per agent per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly.[1] Billing is per agent, and every agent seat is paid; our Zendesk pricing guide covers the renewal, refund and seat rules in full. The one longer free route is the startups program: six months for qualifying early-stage companies, longer only through partner VCs and accelerators. Plan the trial carefully. Two weeks go fast.
What the 14-day trial actually includes
You start the trial from the pricing page or zendesk.com, and no card is needed. Most trials open on Suite Professional, with all of its features, including Explore Professional reports that refresh hourly. Trying another plan or an add-on means talking to sales. The trial admits up to 5 team members including you, so four colleagues at most. That limit matters. A ten-person support team cannot put its whole roster into the trial, so routing and workload tests will run on a partial team rather than your real one.
The account does not start empty. It comes with sample data, and an AI setup wizard starts automatically when the trial opens, building an AI agent plus views and fields from your website. The help center starts in setup mode, and customers cannot see it until you activate it. Marketplace apps can be installed during the trial, so you can check the Slack, Jira or Shopify connections you depend on before paying. Developers should know the trial caps webhooks at 10, with 60 invocations a minute, which is enough to prove an integration but not to load-test one.
Voice gets a smaller sample. The trial includes one Zendesk phone number and no extra numbers, outbound calls are local and limited to 2 minutes each, and there is no SMS or text messaging. The number is activated when the trial starts and is kept if you buy a plan with voice.
A Zendesk phone number assigned during a trial keeps billing unless you remove it after the trial, so delete numbers you will not use.
Only the account owner can request the one-time 14-day extension, and it works before or after expiry on eligible trials. Ask before deleting anything or starting a second account.
When the 14 days run out
Eligible trials can be extended once, for another 14 days, and only the account owner can request it from the admin dashboard, either before or after expiry.[2] By our arithmetic, that makes 28 days the longest standard evaluation. After that you either buy or let the trial expire. If you buy, the data, configuration, ticket history and articles you built carry over, and Zendesk's buying flow lets you purchase the trial plan directly or compare plans first.
If you do not buy, the setup disappears. Zendesk's Free Trial Terms say trial data and configuration are permanently lost at the end of the trial unless you purchase a subscription or export the data first.[3] The trial ends at the earliest of its registered end date, the start of a paid subscription, or Zendesk ending it at its sole discretion. Zendesk recommends simply letting a trial expire. Once a payment method is on the account, the trial cannot be cancelled before it expires; early cancellation otherwise goes through Customer Support.
Paying customers get other ways to try before buying. Selected existing accounts can trial a higher plan or a feature for 30 days, and only owners and billing admins can accept the offer. If the upgrade is not purchased, the account returns to its current plan and price, with read-only access to what was built. Copilot has its own 30-day trial, started by the owner or a billing admin. Developers get a free 14-day trial developer account, and Marketplace partners get a sponsored instance for up to 5 agents that does not expire. It is not a loophole. Zendesk suspends any sponsored account used to provide actual support.
The startups program: six months, with conditions
The pricing page describes the startups program as a 6-month trial of the Zendesk Suite for up to 50 agents. The startups page sets six months as the baseline for every accepted company, with 1- or 2-year offers available only through Zendesk's VC and accelerator partners.[4] The offer is redeemable for Suite Professional and Copilot, and the agent count depends on your funding profile and partner. No card is needed upfront. So the honest summary is six months free, longer only if a partner gets you in.
Eligibility is narrow. You must be a brand-new Zendesk subscriber, funded no further than Series B, and younger than 10 years, with 50 or fewer employees unless a partner refers you; larger startups need that referral. Existing customers do not qualify. When the program ends, you must choose a paid plan to keep the account. There is no downgrade to a free tier, because none exists.
Do the math before month seven. Five agents at $115 per agent per month billed annually come to $575 a month, or $6,900 a year, by our arithmetic. Moving down to email-only ticketing costs far less but removes chat, voice and the help center your customers may already use. Our Zendesk for startups guide walks through seat growth and plan choices for teams of one to five agents.
The startups program ends with a required paid plan. Price your agent count on the plan you will actually need before the six months run out.
The cheapest way to pay after the trial
Prices shown are what Zendesk lists for visitors in the United States, in US dollars. Your price can differ by country, currency and local taxes such as VAT.
| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support Team | $19 per agent per month | $25 per agent per month | Email ticketing, triggers, macros, views, public social |
| Suite Team | $55 per agent per month | $69 per agent per month | Messaging, live chat, voice, one help center in one language |
| Suite Professional | $115 per agent per month | $149 per agent per month | SLAs, skills routing, community, up to 5 help centers, 40+ languages |
| Suite Enterprise | Talk to Sales | Talk to Sales | Custom roles, audit logs, sandbox, approval workflows |
Support Team is the cheapest step, but it is email ticketing only: no messaging or live chat, no help center, no voice, and only public social channels such as Facebook and X. Suite Team is the lowest plan with messaging, live chat, voice and a help center, limited to one help center in one language. SLAs, skills-based routing, multiple ticket forms, community forums and customer-portal ticket management all start on Suite Professional. That is the plan most trials run on. Anything you build around those features in the trial will not survive a move to a cheaper plan.
A few parts are free inside a paid plan. Every plan includes AI agents with an allowance of automated resolutions: 5 per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, up to 10,000 a year, with no rollover. Beyond that, each resolution costs $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, unless admins choose to pause the AI agents instead. Light agents and contributors take no paid seat; Suite Professional includes up to 100 light agents, while the Team plans get them only through an add-on. Suspended agents still pay.
The billing term matters more for a short commitment. Zendesk labels annual billing 20% off; by our arithmetic the saving is 24%, 20% and 23% on the three listed plans. Billed monthly, nine months of the $25 plan cost $225, just under the $228 annual commitment, while ten months cost $250. The same nine-month threshold holds per agent at $69 a month billed monthly ($621 for nine months against $660 a year billed annually) and at $149 a month billed monthly ($1,341 for nine months against $1,380 a year billed annually). So monthly billing wins only if you will stay nine months or less. Annual terms are non-refundable, renew automatically at then-current rates unless notice arrives 30 days before the term ends, and cannot be downgraded mid-term.
How Freshdesk's free option compares
Freshdesk, one of the two other help desks in our catalog, also has no self-serve free plan for new buyers. Its trial also lasts 14 days without a card, on Enterprise features, but it invites up to 2 team members, against up to 5 including you on Zendesk. Freshdesk's terms likewise delete trial data permanently unless you export it, so the export step applies to both. Gorgias, the third, has no free plan either, and its trial lasts 7 days with no payment details, as our Gorgias pricing guide explains.
Freshdesk's difference is its Free program. It covers Freshdesk only, not Freshdesk Omni, for up to 2 agents, and Freshdesk's help center describes it as free for 6 months for small businesses and startups. Moving an account into it now goes through Freshdesk's Customer Success team rather than a button in the product. The program includes email ticketing, a knowledge base, canned responses, a help widget and 24x5 email support, but no API access, no marketplace apps, no SLAs and no AI Agent sessions. Our guide to whether Freshdesk is free has the full list.
On paid entry plans, Freshdesk Growth is $19 per agent per month billed annually, or $23 billed monthly. At that entry level, Zendesk Support Team and Freshdesk Growth both cost $19 per agent per month billed annually, but Support Team has no help center while Freshdesk Growth includes a knowledge base. Compare features, not just price. Intercom, outside our catalog, also offers a 14-day trial with no card that includes all features, and it runs an Early Stage program for startups.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add or remove agents after buying Zendesk?+
Adding agents takes effect at once with prorated charges. Reducing seats or downgrading becomes a pending change for the next billing cycle, and you keep paying the current rate until then with no prorated refund.
Which payment methods does Zendesk accept?+
Credit or debit cards, PayPal and bank direct debit (ACH for eligible US accounts); managed accounts can also pay by wire transfer or check. Billing currencies are USD, EUR, GBP and BRL, and prices exclude taxes.
What happens if a card renewal payment fails?+
Card-paid accounts are suspended 22 days after the renewal date and cancelled 29 days after it. While suspended, tickets and email stop.
Does a Zendesk trial include a CRM?+
No. Zendesk is a customer-service platform, not a CRM. Zendesk Sell was a separate CRM product and is being retired on 31 Aug 2027.
The bottom line
Zendesk is not free, and it never becomes free after the trial. Treat the 14-day trial, plus the one 14-day extension, as a structured test on Suite Professional with up to five people, and export or buy before it ends, because the setup is deleted otherwise. Qualifying startups get the most generous route: six months, longer only through partners, then a paid plan. Everyone else pays from $19 per agent per month billed annually, on a plan without a help center, so check which features you actually built before choosing.
