The best Zendesk alternative depends on how you want the bill to grow, not on a feature list. Freshdesk is the closest swap: its Growth plan and Zendesk Support Team both cost $19 per agent per month billed annually, yet Freshdesk Growth includes a knowledge base that Support Team lacks. Intercom fits teams that want AI to carry the first line, because it bills per seat plus a fee for each outcome its Fin agent resolves. HubSpot Service Hub, Salesforce Service Cloud and Zoho Desk earn a look only when your CRM already drives the decision. Our verdict is simple. Switch for a billing model. Never switch for a sticker price alone.
Pick the billing model first, then the brand
Zendesk's pricing page lists Support Team at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, Suite Team at $55 or $69, and Suite Professional at $115 or $149 [1]. The top plan, Suite Enterprise, is sold only through sales. Every agent, admin and suspended agent takes a paid seat, which our Zendesk pricing breakdown covers in full. Support Team covers email ticketing plus public social channels, with no live chat, no help center and no voice. Messaging, telephony and one help center start on Suite Team. Hold those two facts against every rival below, because most comparisons quietly set a chat-capable rival against the email-only plan.
| Option | How people are billed | AI agent meter | Free route after the trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk | Per agent; admins and suspended agents also pay | Automated resolutions: 5 per agent a month on Team plans, 10 on Suite Professional, no rollover | None; startups program of six months |
| Freshdesk | Per agent; every agent on the same plan | Freddy AI Agent sessions: 500 once per account, then packs of 100 | Free program for up to 2 agents, only through Customer Success |
| Intercom | Per seat; 1 Full seat minimum | Fin outcomes, at most one per conversation | Early Stage program for startups |
The AI meters are the hard part of any comparison. A resolution, a session and an outcome are counted by different rules, and the allowances differ too: one is monthly per agent, one is a single grant per account, and one does not exist. So only the overage prices line up, and only after each allowance is spent. A session is counted per conversation window. The other two units count only conversations the AI settles without a human taking over.
By our arithmetic, if the AI resolves all 200 conversations past the allowance, Zendesk bills $400 a month pay-as-you-go or $300 committed, against $98 for two Freddy session packs once Freshdesk's one-time 500 sessions are used. Intercom has no allowance, so the same 200 would bill $198 in a month as Fin outcomes. Freddy bills per session whether or not the AI resolves it, so per solved request its $0.49 beats Zendesk's overage only when the AI resolves more than about a quarter of conversations ($2.00 pay-as-you-go) or a third ($1.50 committed). Those gaps matter at volume, but less than the channels each plan includes: a cheaper meter on a plan without chat or voice still forces a second purchase.
Estimate monthly AI conversations, subtract each allowance, then compare overage prices. A Zendesk resolution, a Freddy session and an Intercom Fin outcome are counted by different rules.
Freshdesk: the same entry price, a different shape
Prices shown are what Zendesk lists for visitors in the United States, in US dollars. Your price can differ by country, currency and local taxes such as VAT.
Freshdesk's pricing page lists Growth at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $23 monthly, Pro at $55 or $66, and Enterprise at $89 or $107 [2]. Every agent on a Freshdesk account sits on the same plan, so an upgrade applies to the whole team. Annual billing on Freshdesk saves about 17% per plan by our arithmetic, a smaller cut than Zendesk's, where annual billing comes out roughly 20% to 24% cheaper depending on the plan. Freshdesk takes cards but not PayPal; Zendesk accepts PayPal.
The entry tiers share a price but not a shape. Freshdesk Growth adds a customer portal and knowledge base to email ticketing, while Zendesk Support Team has no help center at all. Live chat flips the picture. Plain Freshdesk has no live chat on any plan; it needs Freshdesk Omni, which Freshworks lists at $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 monthly on Omni Growth. Zendesk Suite Team, at $55 per agent per month billed annually, already bundles messaging, live chat, voice and a help center.
Agent-side AI is where the gap widens. Freddy AI Copilot costs $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 monthly, on Pro and Enterprise, and you buy it for chosen agents. Zendesk's Copilot costs $50 per agent per month paid yearly, needs Suite Professional or higher, and covers every agent seat or none. By our arithmetic, giving Copilot to 3 agents on a 10-agent team costs $1,044 a year with Freddy on Freshdesk, against $6,000 a year with Zendesk Copilot on all 10 seats. Our Freshdesk vs Zendesk comparison walks through the rest plan by plan.
Intercom: per seat, plus a fee per AI outcome
Intercom's pricing page lists Essential at $29 per seat a month, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132, without a billing term next to those figures [3]. Every plan includes unlimited live chat, support email and in-app chats. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, a workflows builder, round-robin assignment, a multilingual help center and 20 free Lite seats. Expert adds HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand help centers and 50 free Lite seats. Fin AI Agent costs $0.99 per outcome on every plan, and outcomes such as booking a call bill at $9.99.
The outcome rules are generous. Intercom charges at most one outcome per conversation, and nothing when the customer returns for more help, when Fin hands over, when a procedure fails, or for spam and greetings. By our arithmetic, five seats cost $145 a month on Intercom Essential at its listed price, which carries no billing term, against $275 a month on Zendesk Suite Team billed annually, a plan that already includes voice and a help center, before any AI usage. Intercom's Copilot runs $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 monthly, with unlimited use, and each agent gets 10 free Copilot conversations a month.
Read the data terms before you sign. Intercom's Terms let it use Customer Data for its own AI model training, and they state the service is not PCI DSS compliant. Zendesk says its third-party LLM providers never train on customer data, although Zendesk itself trains generic cross-account models on aggregated, sanitized service data. On contracts, Intercom downgrades typically take effect at renewal, and annual terms renew unless notice arrives 30 days before the end.
There is a middle path. Intercom sells Fin on top of an existing Zendesk help desk through sales, at $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum. By our arithmetic, that minimum works out to $49.50 a month. Your tickets, macros and integrations stay where they are while you measure how many conversations the AI actually settles. Our Zendesk vs Intercom comparison covers the head-to-head.
Intercom sells Fin on top of an existing Zendesk help desk through sales, with a 50-outcome monthly minimum, so you can try AI-first support without moving tickets.
When the CRM or the niche decides
HubSpot, Salesforce and Zoho
HubSpot Service Hub, Salesforce Service Cloud and Zoho Desk belong on the shortlist when your sales data already lives in that vendor's CRM. Then support becomes a module of a system you run anyway. Check Zendesk's connectors before you decide. The Zendesk Support for HubSpot integration is one-way, from Zendesk to HubSpot, and tickets show only on the HubSpot contact timeline. The free Salesforce app syncs tickets to Salesforce on every current Zendesk plan, but without attachments, closed tickets or the comments field. If you need two-way sync, that is a real reason to look elsewhere.
One more trigger applies to Zendesk Sell customers. Sell is a separate sales CRM, not part of the help desk, and it retires on 31 Aug 2027. Zendesk recommends Pipedrive as the replacement, and Sell data is deleted when the subscription ends or on that date. Teams in that spot are choosing a CRM anyway, so pricing a CRM-native service desk alongside it is reasonable.
Gorgias, Help Scout, Front and ServiceNow
These four show up on most shortlists. Gorgias is now in our catalog with its own pages; for Help Scout, Front and ServiceNow we hold no pricing or feature pages, so what we report on them is attributed. Gorgias bills the whole account by billable tickets a month, not per agent: Basic is $60 a month billed monthly or $50 a month billed annually for 300 tickets, and Pro is $360 a month billed monthly or $300 a month billed annually for 2,000 tickets. By our arithmetic, five agents on Zendesk Suite Team at $55 per agent per month billed annually cost $275 a month, more than Gorgias Basic and less than Gorgias Pro. A small team with heavy ticket volume pays less on per-agent pricing such as Zendesk; a large team with light volume per agent points toward Gorgias. Our Gorgias vs Zendesk comparison and Gorgias alternatives run the numbers. Zendesk's comparison page says Help Scout lacks native voice, and Zendesk says ServiceNow does not publish its pricing. Front we name only. Verify each claim on the rival's own site.
When staying on Zendesk makes sense
The review sites where verified business users rate software treat Zendesk well. Trustpilot reads very differently, but many of its reviewers are end customers of companies that use Zendesk, so it maps complaint themes rather than product quality. The top themes are slow support, AI and bots, cancellation and price increases. Each traces to a contract fact: renewal at then-current rates, no refunds, and Standard Support on Suite plans in 8-to-5 local business hours, five days a week, with 24/7 only on paid Premier plans.
Staying makes sense when you want voice, messaging and a help center under one plan, or SLA policies and skills-based routing, which start on Suite Professional. Price alone is not the reason. By our arithmetic, Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month billed annually sits next to $118 for Freshdesk Omni Pro with its Voice add-on, which includes multiple SLA policies, and Freshdesk Growth already has one default SLA policy.
Our count of the Marketplace API found 1,823 listings on 2 Nov 2026. Intercom says it connects to 450+ apps. Leaving also has a timeline. There is no mid-term downgrade or seat reduction, and you can export during the term and for 30 days after it ends. Zendesk starts deleting permanently 90 days after cancellation. If you stay, plan one migration anyway: Zendesk Support API tokens stop working on 30 Apr 2027, so every integration that uses one must move to OAuth.
Zendesk renews automatically at then-current rates unless written notice arrives at least 30 days before the term ends, with no refunds. Set a reminder 45 to 60 days ahead and export your data before you cancel.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zendesk a CRM?+
No. Zendesk is a customer-service platform for ticketing, messaging, voice and help centers. Its separate sales CRM, Zendesk Sell, retires on 31 Aug 2027, and CRM data connects through integrations such as Salesforce and Zoho, while the HubSpot integration sends Zendesk tickets one way into HubSpot.
Does Zendesk have a free plan?+
No. Zendesk offers a 14-day trial without a card, usually on Suite Professional, for up to 5 people including you, with one extension. Its startups program gives eligible early-stage companies six months of the Suite for up to 50 agents, longer only through partner VCs and accelerators.
How do the free trials compare?+
All three run 14 days without a credit card. Zendesk's trial allows up to 5 people including you; Freshdesk's runs on Enterprise features and invites up to 2 team members; Intercom's includes all features, Fin and add-ons.
Can I cut Zendesk seats before switching?+
Not mid-term. Zendesk does not allow downgrades or agent reductions during a subscription term; you give 30 days' written notice before the term ends and deactivate agents, or it renews at existing levels.
The bottom line
Leave Zendesk for a billing model that fits how your team works, not for a lower headline price. Freshdesk matches the entry price and adds a knowledge base, but live chat needs Omni. Intercom trades per-agent AI allowances for a clean per-outcome fee, with data terms worth reading twice. A CRM-led suite makes sense when sales data already lives there. If you need voice, chat and SLAs in one contract, staying keeps them bundled, though a like-for-like Freshdesk Omni Pro setup with voice costs about the same.
