Pick Zendesk when you run a structured ticket operation that needs skills routing, up to 100 light agents without a paid seat on Suite Professional and a deep app catalog. Pick Intercom when support lives in chat and you want a flat $0.99 per Fin outcome instead of an allowance followed by $1.50-$2.00 per resolution. The sharpest difference is the AI meter: once the plan's monthly allowance runs out, Zendesk charges $2.00 per automated resolution pay-as-you-go, or $1.50 each when bought ahead (committed), while Intercom charges $0.99 for every Fin outcome. Seat prices cut the other way, because on annual billing Zendesk's SLA tier costs less than Intercom's listed Expert price, and Intercom is cheaper for a basic chat inbox. Neither wins everywhere. Your channel mix decides.

Two pricing models: per agent against per seat plus outcomes

Zendesk's pricing page lists Support Team at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, Suite Team at $55 or $69, and Suite Professional at $115 or $149.[1] The top plan, Suite Enterprise, is sold only through sales with no public figure. The rendered page shows the annual prices, while the monthly ones exist in the plan data, so a buyer comparing list prices should check which billing term each quote assumes before doing any team math.

About these prices

Prices shown are what Zendesk lists for visitors in the United States, in US dollars. Your price can differ by country, currency and local taxes such as VAT.

Suite Professional $115 per agent/mo $149 per agent/mo 10 per agent/mo
Suite Enterprise Talk to Sales Talk to Sales quote

Every agent, admin and suspended agent takes a paid seat. Light agents take no paid seat; Suite Professional includes up to 100 (Suite Enterprise up to 1,000), while Support Team and Suite Team get them only through an add-on. Zendesk labels annual billing 20% off; by our arithmetic the real saving is 24%, 20% and 23% across the three listed plans. Support Team is email ticketing only: no live chat, no messaging, no help center and no voice. Those arrive on Suite Team, which gets one help center in one language. The full billing rules sit in our Zendesk pricing guide.

Intercom prices per seat. Its pricing page lists Essential at $29 per seat a month, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132, without a billing term printed beside those figures.[2] Every Intercom plan includes unlimited live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips, and the minimum is one Full seat with no platform fee. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, the Workflows builder, round robin assignment and a private multilingual help center, plus 20 free Lite seats. Expert adds HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help center, and 50 free Lite seats. Lite seats cannot send messages.

Match the job, not the plan name

Same-named tiers do different work. For a chat-first inbox, the fair pairing is Zendesk Suite Team against Intercom Essential, since Support Team has no chat. Five agents cost $275 a month on Suite Team billed annually against $145 a month on Essential at its listed price, by our arithmetic. For SLAs the pairing changes, because Zendesk gates them to Suite Professional and Intercom to Expert. Five agents then cost $575 a month on Suite Professional billed annually against $660 on Expert at its listed price. Billed monthly, Suite Professional rises to $745, above Expert's listed $660.

The AI meter: resolutions against outcomes

Zendesk includes AI agents in every plan with a small allowance: 5 automated resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, up to 10,000 a year. Unused resolutions do not roll over. Past the allowance, admins either allow pay-as-you-go overage or pause the AI agents, which then hand requests to live agents. Assisted escalations, where a human finished the job, do not count against the allowance, and testing in the admin tools, the conversation simulator and sandboxes consumes nothing.

Intercom bills Fin at $0.99 per outcome on all plans, and at most one outcome per conversation. Intercom does not charge when the customer comes back for more help, when Fin hands over or the customer asks for a human, for failed procedures, for spam, or for a reply to a bare greeting. Qualification outcomes, such as booking a call or starting a trial, cost $9.99 each. Customers can set spending limits, and usage charges arrive in arrears on the next invoice.

The arithmetic depends on volume. Take 10 agents on Suite Professional: they include 100 resolutions a month. At 300 AI-handled requests a month, Zendesk bills 200 extra, which is $400 pay-as-you-go or $300 committed, while 300 Fin outcomes on Intercom come to $297. Below roughly 198 resolutions a month, Zendesk's pay-as-you-go total stays under Fin's. At the committed $1.50, the crossover with Fin's $0.99 moves to about 294 requests a month for these 10 agents. Beyond it, each extra request costs $1.50 or $2.00 on Zendesk against $0.99 on Fin, so the gap widens with volume. This compares the meters only, not the seat bills.

Find your AI crossover first

Estimate how many requests the AI agent will close each month, subtract Zendesk's included allowance, and compare the remainder at $2.00 pay-as-you-go against $0.99 per Fin outcome for the same volume.

There is also a hybrid route for teams that like Zendesk's ticketing but want outcome billing. Intercom sells Fin on top of other help desks, Zendesk included, at $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum, through its sales team. Intercom also says Fin can be tested against AI-driven simulated conversations before it goes live, and that pausing it stops the charges. Zendesk's own agents, tiers and settings are covered in our AI playbook.

Copilot: every seat or per agent

Zendesk's Copilot costs $50 per agent per month, paid yearly, on Professional and higher plans. It is bought for every agent seat, never for chosen agents, and Zendesk does not publish a monthly add-on price. Suite Professional already includes Admin Copilot plus capped writing and summary tools: 5 uses per agent a month, pooled, up to 500 an account. At the cap those tools pause until the next billing cycle. No overage is charged.

Intercom lists Copilot at $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 billed monthly, with unlimited usage, and each agent also gets 10 free Copilot conversations a month. For a 10-agent team billed annually, Copilot adds $6,000 a year on Zendesk against $3,480 on Intercom, by our arithmetic. That gap is real. Zendesk's included capped tools narrow it only for teams whose agents draft and summarize a handful of times a month.

Price Copilot for every seat

Zendesk's Copilot add-on is bought for all agent seats on Professional and higher plans, so multiply it by your whole agent count, not just the agents who would use it.

Contracts, trials and your data afterward

Both trials last 14 days with no card. Zendesk starts most trials on Suite Professional, admits up to 5 people including you, and allows one extension; trial data is lost at the end unless you buy or export. Intercom's trial includes all features, Fin and add-ons, and a payment method is needed afterward to keep Fin running. Intercom can also end a trial at any time for any reason, so plan the evaluation inside the first two weeks on either side.

Renewal terms look alike. Annual terms renew automatically unless notice arrives at least 30 days before the term ends; Zendesk renews at then-current rates, and Intercom's Terms let it move plans to its then-current list price when a renewal term starts. Neither refunds fees outside its agreement's own cases. Zendesk allows no downgrade or seat reduction during a term; changes wait for the next one.[3] Intercom says downgrades typically take effect at renewal. Set a reminder 45 to 60 days before renewal on either.

Data exits differ by a little. Zendesk lets you export during the term and for 30 days after it ends, and starts permanent deletion 90 days after cancellation. Intercom cuts access to your data 30 days after termination and may delete it at any time after that. Intercom bills in US dollars only and charges 1.5% a month on late invoices, while Zendesk accepts USD, EUR, GBP and BRL, charges interest on overdue amounts and suspends card accounts 22 days after the renewal date if payment fails.

⚠️
Watch out
No mid-term downgrade on Zendesk

Zendesk's Customer Agreement allows no downgrade or seat reduction during a subscription term, and notice for the next term must arrive at least 30 days before it ends.

The scores above are Zendesk's alone. On Trustpilot most reviewers are unhappy, many of them end customers of companies that run Zendesk, so treat it as a map of complaint themes rather than a trend. The recurring themes are support response, cancellation, price increases and contracts. Those line up with the renewal rules above, not with ticketing features, which is why the contract terms deserve as much reading time as the feature list.

AI training, compliance and the app catalog

Intercom's Terms let it use Customer Data for Intercom AI model training, as part of providing and improving the service. It also keeps ownership of usage data and anonymized data derived from your use. Zendesk's position has layers. Its AI Services Addendum says you own inputs and outputs, and no LLM provider may use Service Data except to provide and secure the AI services. Its trust center says third-party LLM providers never train on customer data, yet Zendesk does train generic cross-account models on aggregated, sanitized Service Data.[4] Opt-outs exist.

Health data needs a business associate agreement on both. Intercom lists HIPAA support on Expert; Zendesk requires the BAA and a HIPAA configuration of the account. Payment data is the sharper split. Intercom states its services are not PCI DSS compliant and forbids card data in them, while Zendesk offers native manual redaction and automatic credit-card redaction without its data-protection add-on.

Our count of the Zendesk Marketplace API on 2 Nov 2026 found 1,823 published listings, 506 of them paid. Intercom says it connects to 450+ apps, including Jira, Slack and Salesforce, and its Terms let it disable an integration with or without notice. New Zendesk accounts cannot use API tokens at all, and existing tokens stop working on 30 Apr 2027, so integrations run on OAuth. Intercom, for its part, translates conversations so agents can work in 45+ languages.

The bottom line

Choose Zendesk if you need skills routing, up to 100 light agents without paid seats on Suite Professional, or a large app catalog, or if you want SLAs at a lower per-agent price and can commit to annual billing. Choose Intercom if a chat inbox and an outcome-billed AI agent cover the job, if Fin will close well beyond your Zendesk allowance each month, if you want a multilingual help center below the SLA tier, or if Copilot must reach every agent cheaply.
