Social media analytics tools pull the results from all your networks into one place, keep the history the networks themselves drop, and turn it into a report someone can read. No single tool covers every part. The method: start with the free insights each network gives you, then pick a tool for the gap that hurts most, whether that is history, cross-network reports, client-ready branding or competitor tracking. Below is what a complete setup needs, which tools cover which part, two combinations that work, and a short guide to choosing.

What a complete measurement setup needs

Measuring social media is five jobs, not one. Most frustration comes from buying a tool for one job and expecting it to do the other four. Before you compare any social media analytics platforms, check which of these you actually lack today.

  1. Collection across networks. Every account's numbers land in one view, without logging into each app.
  2. History. Last year's numbers are still there next year, so you can compare seasons.
  3. Reporting. A PDF, slide deck or link that a boss or client can read without a login.
  4. Comparison. Your growth next to competitors or similar accounts, so a number has context.
  5. Website link. Social clicks show up in your site analytics with the right source, so you can see what sold.

The first and fifth parts are partly free. The second, third and fourth are where paid tools earn their place. If you have never defined which numbers matter, start with our guide to what social media analytics should track before you pick software.

Toolkit tip
Connect every profile on day one

Some tools start counting only from the day a profile is added, so a trial you start late leaves a gap you cannot fill.

The free first step: native insights

Meta's own dashboard already does more than many owners realize. Insights in Meta Business Suite covers both your Facebook Page and your Instagram profile, with an overview focused on the past 28 days, an audience tab with demographics and active times, and a benchmark against businesses in the same category with similar reach. [1] LinkedIn and TikTok have their own analytics screens too.

The limits are structural. Each dashboard covers one company's networks, so a business on Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok checks three places. Each dashboard focuses on recent weeks, so a year-over-year comparison means copying numbers out. Nothing builds a combined report. Many owners bridge that gap with a monthly spreadsheet; our free social media report template shows the exact layout. The spreadsheet stops working when you spend more time copying numbers than reading them, often once you post to three or more networks, or the first client wants a branded report.

Social media analytics tools for a solo owner or creator

If you run one brand, post mostly to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, and mainly want history and a clean view, you need collection and history more than heavy reporting. Three tools fit, with clear differences in depth.

Metricool covers the most ground for one brand. It adds a web tracker for your site and ads reporting for Meta, Google and TikTok, so the website link is partly built in. History is the main upgrade: from Starter, the analytics history has no end date, and reports come out as PDF or PowerPoint. Competitor tracking covers Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky and Twitch, plus YouTube on paid plans and X on paid plans with an add-on, but not TikTok or LinkedIn. Metricool keeps reports and history by plan, so check which one holds the feature you need.

Metricool Solves this

Keeps unlimited analytics history for each connected profile from Starter and builds PDF or PowerPoint reports; a web tracker and ads reporting for Meta, Google and TikTok sit in the same view.

Where it stops: Free keeps 30 days and makes no reports; competitor tracking skips TikTok and LinkedIn. Plan: Starter (history and reports); Advanced (custom report templates, Looker Studio connector)

Later is the Instagram analytics tool of this group. Its depth sits on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, with audience, Reels, Stories and hashtag reports. Later shows different analytics depth on each plan, and the history window grows with the plan.

Later Partly

Shows overview, audience, post, Reels, Stories and hashtag reports for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok; Scale adds a custom dashboard, competitive benchmarking and scheduled report delivery.

Where it stops: No analytics for LinkedIn Pages, YouTube Shorts or Snapchat; no white-label reports. Plan: Starter 3 months of history, Growth 1 year, Scale 2 years

Buffer fits if you already schedule there and want results next to your posts. Insights is simple, and paid plans export it for your own template.

Buffer Partly

Insights collects results from your connected channels with AI takeaways, and paid plans export them as CSV, Markdown or PDF for your own report.

Where it stops: Free keeps 30 days; no custom report builder or audience demographics. Plan: Essentials (unlimited history, reports, custom UTM parameters)
⚠️
Watch out
Disconnecting can erase history

In Buffer, disconnecting a channel or removing it from an organization permanently deletes its analytics. Export before you clean up channels.

Social media report tools for agencies and client work

When the reader of your numbers is a client, reporting becomes the main job. You need a branded file, delivered on schedule, without rebuilding it by hand every month. Two tools in our catalog handle it, at very different depths.

Sendible starts with quick reports on every plan and moves to branded client reports in Report Hub from Premium. That makes it the natural social media report tool for a small agency that sends the same report to each client monthly. Quick reports cover one to ten profiles at once, and only custom reports can be shared by link or emailed on a schedule. Plan for one gap. Sendible stores 90 days of data as standard, and Instagram reports begin the day the profile is added. Connect client accounts the week you sign them.

Sendible Solves this

Builds one-click quick reports for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok on every plan; Report Hub makes branded reports with your logo that can be emailed on a schedule.

Where it stops: 90 days of stored data as standard; Instagram reports start the day the profile is added. Plan: Premium (custom branded reports)

SocialBee also makes reports, but they are narrower. They work per profile, which suits a freelancer reporting on one or two accounts better than an agency with many.

SocialBee Partly

Analytics covers nine networks, including LinkedIn posts made outside SocialBee; Pro exports a PDF report that can carry your company logo.

Where it stops: PDF reports go one profile at a time; competitor analysis is Facebook only. Plan: Pro (PDF reports); Accelerate (2 years of history)

Social media analytics platforms for teams that analyze

Some teams need more than a monthly summary. They compare against competitors, split organic from paid, measure their own team's response times, and want to answer questions across all networks at once. That is where the larger social media analytics platforms sit.

Sprout Social layers its reports by plan. Professional brings the competitor and tag reports, and Advanced brings team reports and recurring deliveries. Custom dashboards come through the Premium Analytics add-on, on Standard and up.

Sprout Social Solves this

Profile and post reports on every plan, then competitor, tag and paid reports with custom branding on Professional; PDFs can go to people without a Sprout account.

Where it stops: Recurring PDF deliveries are Advanced only; custom dashboards need the Premium Analytics add-on. Plan: Professional (competitor, tag, paid reports); Advanced (team reports, recurring delivery)

Hootsuite's analytics span eight networks, from Facebook and LinkedIn to TikTok and YouTube, and include posts you published outside Hootsuite. That matters if several people post from different apps.

Hootsuite Solves this

Reports on owned and paid social across eight networks, including posts published outside Hootsuite, with competitor benchmarking and PDF or PPTX exports; Wisdom answers questions about your data.

Where it stops: No free plan; scheduled reports to external emails only on Advanced and Enterprise. Plan: Standard (5 competitors); Professional (20 competitors)

Two combinations that work

A problem this wide is rarely solved by one purchase. These two pairings cover the five parts with the least overlap.

Native insights first, a tool once history matters

Use Meta Business Suite and each network's own screens for the first months. Copy the totals into a spreadsheet on the first of every month. When you want a year-over-year comparison, or the copying takes longer than the reading, connect a tool such as Metricool. Its Free plan shows 30 days of analytics; Starter keeps unlimited history. Connect early. Several tools only count from the day a profile is added.

Any tool plus tagged links in Google Analytics

No social tool fully answers what social did for sales. Tag every link you post. Google says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, with one unique source value for each platform, such as Facebook, Instagram or TikTok. [2] Buffer Essentials can add custom UTM parameters to your posts, and Sendible connects to Google Analytics 4. Your social tool then reports reach and engagement, while Google Analytics reports visits and conversions. Together they cover the fifth part.

💡
Toolkit tip
Use one UTM source per network

Spell the source the same way every time, such as instagram or facebook, so Google Analytics does not split one network into several rows.

How to choose a social media analytics tool

Start from the part you lack, not from the longest feature list. Then check the plan that holds the feature, because analytics depth is the most plan-dependent area in this category. A free plan that shows 30 days is a preview, not a reporting system.

Your situation Start with Why
One brand, wants history and site traffic Metricool Unlimited history and reports from Starter, web tracker
Instagram-first creator or shop Later Audience, Reels and Stories views on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok
Already scheduling in Buffer Buffer Results next to posts, exports for your own report
Small agency, monthly client reports Sendible Quick reports on every plan, branded reports from Premium
Freelancer with one or two profiles SocialBee Per-profile PDF reports with your logo on Pro
Team comparing competitors, organic vs paid Sprout Social or Hootsuite Competitor, paid and team reporting

Watch the network list closely. Later has no analytics for LinkedIn Pages, Sendible has no reports for Google Business Profile, and SocialBee's competitor analysis is Facebook only. Also check how a tool handles changes on the network side. Sprout Social notes that Facebook impressions were removed in November 2025 and Facebook reach was remapped in June 2026, which breaks a series in any tool. A trend line that breaks is not your fault. Log the change in your report so next year's comparison stays fair.

Three questions settle most choices. Which networks must the reports cover? Who reads the report, you or a client? How far back do you need to compare? Answer those, then test the shortlist on a trial with your real accounts. Connect every profile on day one, since some tools start counting only from that day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best instagram analytics tool for a small business?+

It depends on the gap. Later goes deep on Instagram audience, Reels and Stories; Metricool adds a website tracker and reports from Starter; Instagram's own insights are free but focus on recent weeks.

Are there free social media analytics tools?+

Each network's native insights are free. Metricool Free and Buffer Free both keep 30 days of analytics, and neither builds reports on the free plan.

Can a social media analytics platform track competitors?+

Yes, within limits. Metricool tracks competitors on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky and Twitch, plus YouTube on paid plans and X on paid plans with an add-on, but not TikTok or LinkedIn; Hootsuite benchmarks on X, Facebook Pages and Instagram Business; Sprout Social adds competitor reports on Professional.

Which social media report tool can email reports to clients automatically?+

Sendible schedules custom reports from Premium, Sprout Social sends recurring PDFs on Advanced, Hootsuite schedules reports to external emails on Advanced and Enterprise, and Later delivers scheduled reports on Scale.

The bottom line

Social media analytics tools are worth paying for when they fill a specific gap: history the networks drop, a report a client can read, or a comparison that gives a number meaning. Native insights and a tagged-link habit cover a lot for free. Add Metricool, Later or Buffer when one brand needs history; Sendible when clients need reports; Sprout Social or Hootsuite when a team needs competitor and paid analysis. Pick by the part you lack, check the plan that holds it, and connect your profiles as early as you can.
