Wistia's AI comes in two layers. The everyday layer costs nothing: automated transcripts and captions at about 95% accuracy, AI chapters, auto-tags, the in-app Wistia Agent and the MCP server. The heavy layer draws on one pooled credit balance. Dubbing costs 800 credits a minute, professional captions 1,000, AI audio descriptions from 400 and a social clip 50. Business includes 5,000 credits a month, which by our arithmetic covers 6.25 minutes of dubbing into one language. That is the verdict. Transcripts and chapters are a free bonus; localization is a real budget line. On data, Wistia routes AI work through named third-party providers and says your content does not train general AI models.
The free layer and the metered layer
Credits are one balance shared by every metered feature. Free accounts get 3,000 credits once, and they do not expire. Business gets 5,000 a month with no rollover, and Enterprise gets a custom allotment. Hosting, playback, standard editing, analytics and connecting the agent or an MCP client never use credits, though metadata writes cost 1 credit each.[1] Included credits go first, then credit subscriptions, then top-ups. If a job needs more than you have, you are warned before it starts. Only Account Owners and Managers see the balance.
| AI feature | Credit cost |
|---|---|
| Automated transcripts and captions | Free on all plans |
| Wistia Agent, MCP connection | No credits (free for now) |
| Metadata writes, text translations | 1 credit each |
| Audio enhancement in the editor | 8 credits |
| Social clip | 50 credits |
| AI dubbing | 800 credits a minute |
| Professional captions (standard / rush) | 1,000 / 1,600 a minute |
| AI audio description (standard / extended) | 400 / 600 a minute |
| Professional audio description, English | 3,200 / 4,800 a minute |
| Professional audio description, Spanish | 3,600 / 5,200 a minute |
| Remix edit or revision | 1 monthly Remix credit |
AI chapters and auto-tags do not appear on the credit price list at all. Remix runs on its own monthly allowance, separate from the pooled balance, and we could not find how many Remix credits each plan includes. Two product-wide rules apply here too: plans changed in March 2026, so help pages naming older tiers describe legacy plans, and paid AI work is not refundable. Our Wistia pricing guide covers both.
Transcripts, captions and chapters cost nothing
Automated transcripts are free on every current plan, arrive within minutes and are about 95% accurate. Professional human-reviewed transcripts reach 99% and cost 1,000 credits a minute with four business days of turnaround, or 1,600 a minute for one business day. Two limits catch people. Caption settings apply to new uploads only, and the app cannot order transcripts in bulk for existing videos. Smart formatting of numbers, dates and URLs covers only transcripts generated after 15 September 2026.
Accuracy tools are modest but useful. A keyword glossary takes up to 100 hard words, such as product names. Speaker identification is an account-level switch, yet speaker names never appear in caption files or downloads; a speaker-labelled transcript needs the Wistia Agent or the API. Transcripts also feed the LLM-friendly embed, which writes the text into your page HTML for AI crawlers. That copy freezes when you copy the embed code. Edit the transcript later and you must paste a fresh embed.
AI chapters are built from the transcript and are on by default for new accounts. Generating them again replaces every existing chapter. A video holds one set only. Chapters cannot be exported either, except through the Player API. Auto-tagging adds up to three AI tags drawn from the transcript, or none when nothing fits, and an Account Owner can switch it off in Account Settings.
Dubs, social clips, Remix edits and AI chapters are all built from the transcript, so correct names and terms before ordering anything that spends credits.
Dubbing and audio descriptions: where credits run out
Dubbing covers 50+ languages with lip sync, on paid plans, at 800 credits a minute; Enterprise includes it. Each order also delivers the transcript and captions in the new language. The dub is generated from the transcript, so transcript errors become audio errors, and silent or music-only videos cannot be dubbed. The player picks the dub matching the viewer's browser language. The help center mentions one free test dub of up to 15 minutes per account, but the pricing page lists dubbing as unavailable on Free. Check the download options for dubbed versions.
The credit math on a real project
Take a 20-minute webinar dubbed into three languages. By our arithmetic that is 48,000 credits, so a Business account would buy 43,000 beyond its monthly 5,000. Wistia sells one-time top-ups from 4,000 credits for $25 to 50,000 for $250, prepaid and expiring 12 months after purchase, plus subscriptions that run $22.50 a month for 5,000 credits to $906.25 a month for 250,000. Per dubbed minute that ranges from $5.00 on the smallest top-up to $2.90 on the largest subscription. The small subscription beats a small top-up only above 3,600 credits a month, about 4.5 dubbed minutes.
Audio descriptions are produced by partner 3Play Media and can be ordered on all paid plans by Owners, Managers and users with Can manage permission.[2] They come in English or Spanish, matching the video's language. AI descriptions are English only and arrive the same day; professional ones take five days, and Spanish videos need them at 3,600 credits a minute standard or 5,200 extended. Extended descriptions pause the video while narration plays. By our arithmetic, a 10-minute video costs 4,000 credits with standard AI descriptions, 32,000 with professional English ones or 36,000 with professional Spanish ones.
Replacing a video removes its dubs, and editing in the Wistia Editor removes audio descriptions unless you choose Save as New Video, so the credits are spent again.
Social clips, Remix and the editor's AI tools
AI highlights and social clips are listed on every plan, at 50 credits per clip. The source must run at least one minute and carry a Wistia-generated transcript; uploaded transcripts and burnt-in captions block generation. Auto-frame keeps faces in a vertical layout and is tuned for one to three speakers. Each clip comes with AI key moments and suggested post captions you can regenerate. A clip cut from a highlighted passage needs at least 15 seconds. Spent on nothing else, the monthly Business credits buy 100 clips.
Remix is the chat-driven agentic editor, and it is still in beta. You describe a cut, such as a sales highlight reel from a webinar, and it assembles one from existing footage. It never generates new footage. Only Account Owners and Managers can use it, it needs a Wistia-generated transcript, and every Remix or revision uses one monthly Remix credit with no rollover. Treat it as a draft tool. Wistia's terms say beta services can change or disappear at any time and come without support.
The regular editor adds smaller AI helpers. Enhance speech costs 8 credits and does not work on videos longer than one hour; exporting before it finishes keeps the original audio. Intro and outro silences of two seconds or more can be trimmed in one click, and recordings from Wistia webinars or Record get them trimmed automatically. Mochine builds motion-graphics videos at 250 credits each. Free includes one motion kit and Business three; a custom motion kit costs 2,500 credits, and extra custom-kit turns cost 250.
The Wistia Agent, the MCP server and the CLI
The Wistia Agent is an in-app assistant, free for now, that finds and acts on content across the account within your own permission level. It takes no action without permission, deletes only after explicit confirmation, and works on mobile. Wistia frames the split simply. Remix is the focused video-creation tool, while the agent is the general helper for finding things and acting on them across folders, Channels and webinars.
The MCP server connects Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to your account and is also free for now. Account Owners and Managers enable it, and only they can use it today. An AI tool can then upload, move and trim media, manage webinars, read analytics down to single visitors, check remaining Remix credits, and order captions, dubs and audio descriptions. The connection is free. The orders still spend credits. In Claude, every action needs approval by default, settable per action. The Wistia CLI offers the same actions in a terminal; our Wistia API guide covers setup.
The MCP server exposes every tool by default; pass the toolsets parameter so an AI assistant only sees what it needs, such as analytics or captions.
What happens to your video when AI touches it
Wistia uses publicly available third-party AI platforms, not only its own models, and names them: Deepgram for transcripts, HeyGen for audio translation, OpenAI for summaries, chapters, translations, key segments and real-time captions, and Amazon Bedrock for product enhancements.[3] ElevenLabs powers text-to-speech. When you use an AI feature, both Wistia and that provider see what you submit and what comes back. Wistia says it cannot guarantee the privacy of data shared with those platforms, and its confidentiality terms do not cover it.
The AI supplement draws the main lines. Your content does not train generalized AI models unless Wistia discloses otherwise, and providers process it only to deliver the feature.[4] You own your inputs and, where law permits, the outputs, though outputs may not qualify for IP protection and their accuracy is not guaranteed. Liability for AI features is capped at $100. Wistia can add, change or drop AI features at any time, so plan around today's list, not a promise.
Health data is the hard stop. Wistia says it does not meet HIPAA requirements and signs no BAAs, for the whole platform, not just the AI features. Personal data is stored in the US, EU and UK transfers rely on the Data Privacy Framework plus standard contractual clauses, and SOC 2 Type 2 reports are available from Wistia's Trust Center. The acceptable use policy bars using Wistia output to train AI models. Ordered dubs and audio descriptions cannot be cancelled once started.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch off AI chapters and auto-tags?+
Yes. Automatic chaptering is on by default for new accounts and an Account Owner can change it in Account Settings, where automatic tagging can also be turned off.
Do Wistia credits expire?+
The 3,000 credits on the Free plan are one-time and do not expire. Monthly plan credits reset on the billing date without rollover, and purchased top-ups expire 12 months after purchase.
Can I recover a deleted dub or professional transcript?+
Deleted transcripts cannot be recovered, and purchased dubs or human-generated captions must be bought again if deleted. For a deleted dub, Wistia asks you to contact Support.
Can developers read the credit balance through the API?+
Yes. The Get Credit Balance endpoint returns available credits and the next scheduled grant, but expiring access tokens created with authorizations get a 403 error.
The bottom line
Wistia's AI earns its place mostly through what it gives away: transcripts, captions, chapters, tags, the agent and MCP access cost no credits. The bill starts with localization and accessibility, where 800 credits a dubbed minute and up to 5,200 a minute for professional Spanish audio descriptions outrun the 5,000 monthly credits on Business quickly. Fix transcripts before ordering anything, budget dubbing by the minute, and keep regulated health content out of the platform entirely.
