Zoho Desk fits an online store's support team when the job is one queue for email, social messages and WhatsApp at a per-agent price, not editing orders from inside the ticket. The edition that unlocks that queue is Standard, at $14 per agent per month billed annually or $20 per agent per month billed monthly [1]. Every active agent needs a seat on the same edition, so the bill grows with headcount; our Zoho Desk pricing guide has the full math. Standard is where WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, live chat and Marketplace extensions such as Shopify begin. The Shopify link shows order data and opens tickets. It stops there.

Morning triage: every channel lands as a ticket

A store's day starts with a backlog from three places: order emails, web-form complaints and messages left overnight on Instagram or Facebook. Zoho Desk turns all three into tickets. Email and web forms work on every edition, with 2 support addresses on Express and 5 on Standard. Facebook, Instagram and X posts and messages arrive in one feed from Express, limited to one brand. Enterprise covers two brands, and more come on request.

Instant messaging is the Standard line. WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Messenger, Telegram, WeChat and LINE each get one channel on Standard, ten on Professional and fifty on Enterprise, and the same counts apply to Business Messaging, Desk's own live chat for your site. Phone support needs Professional, which adds telephony through providers such as Twilio, RingCentral and Amazon Connect, with missed calls and voicemails filed as tickets. SalesIQ live chat, which Zoho positions for pre-sale questions, is Enterprise only.

What the store needs Lowest Zoho Desk edition
Facebook, Instagram and X posts as tickets (1 brand) Express
WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Messenger, Business Messaging chat Standard
Shopify extension (Marketplace public extension) Standard
Work modes, sentiment analysis, Answer Bot in the help center Standard
Telephony, round robin, parent-child tickets Professional
Chatbots inside IM channels, SalesIQ chat, multi-brand help center Enterprise

Express is the trap for small shops. It looks right for a team of five, but it has no instant messaging and no Marketplace public extensions, so WhatsApp and the Shopify widget are both out. A shop that sells through Instagram DMs or WhatsApp starts on Standard regardless of size. Express also stops at five users, and a sixth agent forces the move. By our arithmetic, five agents on Express billed annually cost $35 a month, and six agents on Standard billed annually cost $84 a month.

⚠️
Watch out
Seasonal agents stay billed

Deactivating or deleting a holiday hire does not cut the bill: Zoho Desk keeps billing the purchased seats until you reduce the seat count.

The Shopify extension: order context, not order control

The Shopify for Zoho Desk extension puts a widget beside each ticket [2]. It shows the customer's details, the order ID linked back to Shopify, the store name, order status and total, shipping and billing addresses, and one order note. It can also create a ticket for every order whose status matches one you configure, sent to one department. A Shopify customer new to Zoho Desk becomes a contact automatically. For orders placed before installation, the widget lists only the latest five.

Setup belongs to an admin, who creates an app in the Shopify Dev Dashboard and picks which department and profiles see the widget. Stores on Shopify's Basic plan sync sales orders only and get restricted customer personal data, so agents may see less than they expect. The bigger gap is action. Zoho describes no order actions in the extension, such as refunding, cancelling or editing an order. An agent who approves a refund still switches to the Shopify admin to issue it.

That is the clearest line against Gorgias. Gorgias is built Shopify-first for e-commerce, and its order management and AI Agent need Shopify. It also prices per account by billable tickets a month, not per agent. If most of your tickets end in a refund, exchange or address change, those daily clicks matter more than the license math. Our Gorgias alternatives guide covers the trade from the other side.

💡
Toolkit tip
Keep Shopify ticket rules narrow

Create tickets only for the order statuses that need a person; the extension takes up to four criteria joined with AND or OR, sent to one department.

WhatsApp: credits, windows and templates

Zoho is a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, so the channel connects inside Desk's instant messaging settings. You need a Facebook Business Manager, a verified business, a WhatsApp Business account and a phone number. Zoho's customer story on NOOA Brasil describes that setup, with every WhatsApp message becoming a ticket [3]. Replies within 24 hours of the customer's last message can be free text. After that window closes, only approved templates go out, and Standard and up can hold 1,000 of them. WhatsApp is not offered in the China data center.

Outbound messages run on a prepaid wallet. IM credits cost $2 per credit plus a 3% fee and never expire. When the wallet hits zero, business-initiated messages such as shipping updates stop, while replies inside the customer's window keep flowing. Auto-recharge needs a saved card. Meta's per-message pricing applies on top, and WhatsApp sandbox messaging in Desk has been restricted since 1 October 2026. For order updates in bulk, Standard can send WhatsApp messages from the Tickets module to 50 tickets at once, from the web or the mobile apps.

⚠️
Watch out
WhatsApp credits are non-refundable

Zoho Desk IM credits ($2 per credit plus a 3% fee, prepaid) cannot be refunded once bought, so top up for the volume you expect.

Peak season: routing, work modes and SLAs

Holiday volume is where rules earn their keep. Direct assignment rules route tickets by keywords and tags; Express allows 2, Standard 5 and Professional 15. Round robin starts on Professional, skill-based assignment on Enterprise. Work modes, from Standard, sort the queue by Status, Handshake, Countdown or Priority, so agents work by due time. Zia helps triage too. Sentiment analysis and auto tags start on Standard, anomaly alerts on ticket traffic on Professional, and auto tags read English text only.

SLAs can target first response or resolution time by priority, channel and customer type, with multi-level escalations. Express runs on the default SLA only, Standard holds 4, Professional 10 per department and Enterprise 20 per department. Zoho's food-delivery use case shows the pattern at scale: an escalation rule moved unresolved cases to senior agents after 60 minutes, and a custom function closed threads after 72 hours of quiet so new emails opened fresh tickets. Custom functions in workflows are Enterprise only.

Workflow limits bite first. Zoho describes a small e-commerce company with eight reps and hundreds of order requests a day whose per-product workflow rules had filled its edition's limit. One Automation Studio rule replaced them, handling summary, acknowledgement and routing. Automation Studio needs Professional and opens on request. Standard allows 5 workflow rules per module, Professional 15 per department. Parent-child ticketing, also Professional, groups several messages about one order under a single parent.

Watch peaks in Radar

Radar, Zoho's manager app on every edition including Free, shows live traffic and an instant messaging dashboard covering WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger by channel.

Bots, brands and the Enterprise line

Chatbots inside messaging channels are Enterprise. Answer Bot and Guided Conversations on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, LINE and Business Messaging sit at the top edition. Enterprise costs $40 per agent per month billed annually or $50 per agent per month billed monthly. Answer Bot itself starts on Standard for the help center, and Zoho recommends at least 30 knowledge base articles per department for it. The same food-delivery use case says the platform ran the pre-built Support Specialist and Resolution Expert agents. Those agents are Enterprise only, run in the US and IN data centers only, and reach selected users on request.

Stores running several labels hit the second Enterprise gate, the multi-brand help center. Each brand becomes a department with its own help center, logo, SLAs, channels, notifications and knowledge base articles, and each such department may map only one knowledge base category. Customers either sign in once across brands, the common user base, or register per brand, the unique user base. Switching to unique users needs at least two branded centers. Admins cannot roll it back without Zoho support.

What a store team pays, by our arithmetic

The bill follows agents. By our arithmetic, five agents on Standard billed annually cost $70 a month, and ten agents on Professional billed annually cost $230 a month. Warehouse or fulfillment staff who only read tickets and leave private comments can be light agents, an add-on from Standard at $6 per light agent per month. Enterprise includes 50 light agents. They cannot reply or take assignments, so anyone answering customers needs a full seat.

Gorgias counts tickets instead, so the comparison turns on volume. Within 300 tickets a month, Gorgias Basic billed annually at $50 a month costs more than three Zoho Desk Standard agents ($42 a month) and less than four ($56 a month), by our arithmetic. At 2,000 tickets a month, Gorgias Pro billed annually at $300 a month roughly matches 21 Zoho Desk Standard agents ($294 a month). Gorgias charges $0.40 per ticket above the Basic allowance, and each AI resolution counts as a ticket. Neither figure buys the other's strengths.

Zoho's NOOA Brasil story claims 35% lower licensing costs after the store left Zendesk, moving with Zwitch, Zoho's migration tool. Anyone migrating from Zendesk now should note that Zendesk stopped creating new API tokens on 27 October 2026 and all Support API tokens stop on 30 April 2027. Confirm the migration method with Zoho first. Zoho Desk offers a 15-day trial of any paid edition without a card, and an unconverted trial drops to Free, which has no social or messaging channels.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a migration to Zoho Desk take?+

Zoho's help describes Zwitch migrations in two phases about two weeks apart, at least two weeks in total. Keep the old help desk account and its admin seat active until the move is done.

Can customers send photos of damaged items over WhatsApp?+

Yes. Incoming instant messaging attachments can be up to 50 MB; outgoing WhatsApp images are limited to 5 MB and documents to 50 MB.

Is Zoho Desk PCI compliant for card data?+

Zoho Desk is not in Zoho's PCI (SAQ-D) list, which covers Zoho's finance and commerce products. Keep full card numbers out of tickets and chats.

The bottom line

Zoho Desk suits stores that need email, social, WhatsApp and live chat in one per-agent queue, and Standard is the honest starting edition because Express lacks both messaging and the Shopify widget. Professional earns its price once you need phone support, round robin or more than five workflow rules. Enterprise is for bots inside WhatsApp and Instagram or several branded help centers. Skip it if your agents spend the day refunding and editing Shopify orders. Zoho's extension shows the order. It does not act on it.
