Canva AI is the most searched thing about Canva after Canva itself: about 135,000 searches a month in the US. It is not one tool. It is a set of tools in three tiers, a conversational assistant called Canva AI 2.0, a set of rules about what you may do with the output, and a monthly allowance that decides how much of it you can use. This playbook explains each part and how to get the most from it on each plan. Everything comes from Canva's own pages, read for the US market on 9 October 2026.
The short version
Paid plans get Standard AI tools without a meter and a monthly allowance for Premium and Ultra tools: up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses on Pro, up to 400 or 40 on Business [4]. Free gets 20 uses in total. Trials get the Free allowance [11]. Allowances are per person and never pooled [4]. Above that, AI Pass costs US$100 per person per month [5]. Turn off AI training on your content in privacy settings if you upload anything confidential [47].
Use unmetered Standard tools first; save Premium uses for Magic Layers and images.
Canva sorts its AI tools by how much computing they use. Three tiers. One meter.
Standard tools include the Image Upscaler, image generation with Canva AI and Magic Formulas; on paid plans, tools such as Translate and Magic Write can be used "abundantly" and do not count against the allowance [4].
Premium tools include Magic Layers, generating a design or an image with Canva AI, building interactive experiences with Canva Code, generating elements such as shapes, 3D objects, charts and forms, the music and sound effect generator, the form generator, and Canva's AI tools inside Affinity, such as Generative Fill [4].
Ultra tools include conversational design with Canva AI 2.0, creating video clips and creating images with the newest models, and they "use the most AI allowance" [4].
What each plan gets
| Plan | Standard | Premium | Ultra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free, Pro Lite | Up to 20 uses, shared | Shared with Standard | None |
| Pro, Teams, Nonprofits | Unmetered | Up to 200 | Up to 20 |
| Business, Enterprise | Unmetered | Up to 400 | Up to 40 |
| Education | Unmetered | Up to 200 | Up to 20 |
The figures are Canva's estimates for simple tasks using the lightest tool in each tier; mixing tiers or using heavier tools lowers them [4]. Read them as a ceiling. Not a promise.
Switch AI training off before uploading client material.
On paid and Nonprofits plans the allowance resets on your billing date, monthly even on a yearly plan; on Free it resets at 12:00 a.m. [4]. Daily and weekly prepaid plans get a pro-rated allowance. When you run out, generations slow down with "a brief pause between generations" rather than stop [6], but Ultra tools are not included in those pauses and stay unavailable until the reset [4].
Per person, never pooled
"Allowances aren't shared or pooled across the team or organization." [4] On a five-person Business team, each person has up to 400 Premium uses; one heavy user cannot draw on a quiet colleague's balance. Plan AI by person. Not by team.
Trials carry Free's 20-use AI allowance.
Canva launched Canva AI 2.0 at Canva Create 2026. It lets you create and edit by chatting with an assistant inside the editor, rather than generating once from a single prompt [124]. Canva says it can see your design and change elements, styles or the whole layout, keep designs on brand, and remember your preferences through a Memory Library [124]. On its product page Canva describes "a memory that evolves with you, learning your Brand System, style, and personal preferences" [50], and says every text box, image and graphic it generates stays editable [50].
Free and Education users get Canva AI 1.0 features and some tools, such as Magic Write and Background Remover, with limited monthly use; Canva AI 2.0, the Memory Library and Connectors need a paid plan [124].
Where AI shows up in the editor
Most of Canva's AI is not in a chat window; it is in buttons. The Pro page lists a long set: Background Generator, Photo and Video Background Remover, Magic Resize, Magic Eraser, Magic Write, Magic Grab, which lifts an element out of a photo, Magic Edit, which changes part of an image from a description, Magic Expand, which extends a background, Beat Sync, which times video clips to music, Highlights, which clips standout moments from long videos, Enhance Voice, Magic Animate, Style Match and Translate [3]. Knowing which of these are Standard and which Premium is the main skill in making the allowance last.
Removing C2PA provenance from AI output breaks Canva's AI terms.
Magic Layers turns a flat image into editable layers, so you can move objects and change text without rebuilding the design [51]. Canva says it works best on graphic designs, illustrations and stylised visuals, and on simple designs with distinct elements. PDFs must be converted to PNG or JPG first, multi-page documents exported page by page, and images over 5,000 pixels on the longest edge are not supported [51]. It is a Premium tool. Each use draws on the allowance [4].
Dream Lab and image generation
Dream Lab is Canva's image generator for detailed visuals from text prompts. You can refine a result with a follow-up instruction, add a reference image, edit part of an image, and boost resolution [52]. It offers quality tiers: "Higher tiers use more AI usage but produce better quality results." [52] Some of Canva's image tools use Leonardo.Ai's model behind the scenes, and any Canva user can sign in to Leonardo.Ai with a Canva account and get its Free plan [116].
Video, translation and resizing
Magic Video builds a 60-second video from one to ten clips or photos, adding templates, transitions and music [123]. Translate converts a design into one of 100+ languages, within a 2,000-character limit per run [122]. Resize reformats a design for other channels [126]. On paid plans, Translate and Magic Write are Standard tools and do not use the allowance [4], which makes them the cheapest AI wins in Canva.
Magic Write and Docs
Magic Write generates text from instructions. Canva says its model "is not trained on Canva documents or designs" and was trained on public web pages [48]. It also warns that if you use Magic Write for commercial projects, you may not have exclusive rights to the text [48]. Use it for first drafts and variations. Then edit.
Canva Code
Canva Code generates interactive experiences, such as calculators, quizzes and small websites, from a prompt; it is a Premium tool [4]. Canva's chief operating officer told TechCrunch in February 2026 that the tool had more than 10 million monthly users [80]. Admins can disable it for a team or school [54].
AI in Sheets and data work
Canva Sheets brings AI into spreadsheets: Magic Write writes copy variations, Magic Charts suggests a chart, Magic Insights finds patterns and Magic Formulas writes formulas from plain language [74]. Bulk Create and Data Autofill then turn rows into designs [95]. For marketing teams that produce dozens of variants, this is where AI saves the most time.
Connecting Canva to your AI assistant
Canva has an AI connector, built on the Model Context Protocol, for assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT [61] [62]. From your assistant you can create or generate designs, find existing work, get presenter notes, copy or merge designs, autofill templates and export finished files [60]. The ChatGPT plugin is available on all Canva accounts, including Free and Education, but actions such as using Brand Templates need a paid plan [62]. If an admin has turned Magic Design off, the assistant cannot generate designs for anyone in that team [60].
What you may and may not do with the output
Canva's AI Product Terms forbid using its AI to mislead anyone that content is human-generated, to remove or alter provenance metadata such as C2PA tags, to give regulated legal, medical or financial advice without a qualified professional, or to generate spam or malware [46]. Canva may suspend or terminate accounts that break these rules [46].
Canva's guidance on using its AI legally is practical: use descriptive, generic prompts; do not reference known brands, characters or people without permission; make sure you have rights to any image you edit; and remember that "Anyone can get similar results to you, if they use similar prompts." [45] You can use AI output commercially within the terms [53], but you may not get exclusive rights to it [49].
Prompting well
Canva's guidance is short and useful. Use descriptive, generic prompts; its own example is "a princess driving a red car" rather than a named character or a car brand [45]. Do not reference known brands, characters or people without express permission, make sure you have rights to any image you edit, and do not create deceptive or harmful content [45]. In Dream Lab, refine a result with a short follow-up instead of starting again; a reference image can guide the style, but may use extra allowance [52].
Canva Shield
Canva groups its safety measures under the name Canva Shield: a set of trust, safety and privacy features that Canva says are meant to make its products commercially safe [45]. Its product page says Canva Shield was built with enterprises in mind [50]. The practical meaning for a buyer: there are safeguards against unsafe output, and admins can switch features off, but the responsibility for what you publish stays with you [53].
Your content and training
Canva's privacy policy allows it to use your activity, content and uploads to train its models, and you can manage that in your privacy settings [47]. Education content is never used for AI training [47]. If you use AI on client work, switch the training setting off first. Before any upload.
AI inside Affinity
Affinity, Canva's professional photo, vector and layout app, is free to every Canva account, and paid plans add Canva's AI tools inside it, such as Generative Fill, Generative Expand and image or vector generation [55]. Those Affinity tools are Premium AI tools and are not available on Canva Free [4]. AI Pass also works in Affinity for Pro and Business subscribers [5]. For a designer who prefers a desktop tool, that is Canva's AI without Canva's editor.
Personalisation and connected data
Canva says its AI uses connected information to make future designs feel more relevant, and that data received from Google Workspace APIs follows Google's API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements [53]. Canva notes the feature is rolling out gradually. If you connect work accounts, read what each connector can see before you enable it.
Admin controls
On Teams, Business, Enterprise and Education, owners and admins control AI access. On Teams and Business, Magic features are on for all members by default; on Education, only administrators and teachers have access by default, and Magic Media, Dream Lab and Magic Insights are the only features enabled for students [54]. A team that wants to keep AI out of client deliverables can switch individual features off.
How generous is the allowance?
Every design tool now meters AI, but in different units, so headline numbers do not compare directly. Adobe Express Premium lists 250 generative credits a month [97]. Figma's Professional Full seat adds 3,000 AI credits a month [86], and its Buzz AI tools are open to all seats during the beta [101]. Piktochart gives 500 AI credits on Pro [90]. Canva gives up to 200 Premium uses on Pro, plus unmetered Standard tools [4]. What sets Canva apart is not the size but the publication: it names the tools in each tier and estimates uses per plan, so you can plan.
Getting more AI
There are three ways past the allowance. Business doubles Pro's allowance for US$106 a year more per person; our arithmetic on the list prices [2]. Business users can also buy one-off top-ups, each a month's Business allowance for 30 days [6]. And AI Pass, at US$100 per person per month, gives 40 times more on Pro and 20 times more on Business [5]. Applied to Canva's estimates, both routes through AI Pass reach about 8,000 Premium uses a month; our arithmetic.
A playbook by role
Solo creator on Pro. Use Translate, Magic Write and resizing freely; they are unmetered. Save Premium uses for Magic Layers and image generation. Keep Ultra uses for the few times a month you need a video clip or a new image from the latest models.
Small marketing team on Business. Give the heaviest generator AI Pass or top-ups, not everyone. Use Sheets and Bulk Create for variants. Switch AI training off at account level and agree a prompt rule: no brand names, no real people.
Teacher on Education. Use the 200 Premium uses for lesson materials; students only get Magic Media, Dream Lab and Magic Insights by default [54], and their data never trains Canva's models [26].
Nonprofit team. The Nonprofits plan has Pro's allowance per person [4]. AI Pass is available to it [5], but for most charities the allowance plus Standard tools is enough.
Common mistakes
- Judging Canva's AI during a trial, when the trial carries Free's 20 uses [11].
- Assuming a team shares one AI budget.
- Spending Premium uses on tasks a Standard tool handles.
- Uploading client material without switching off AI training.
- Prompting with a brand or character name and then using the result commercially.
Frequently asked questions
Is Canva AI free?+
Free users get up to 20 uses a month of Standard or Premium AI tools and Canva AI 1.0 features; paid plans get unmetered Standard tools and larger Premium and Ultra allowances.
Can I use Canva AI images commercially?+
Yes, within Canva's AI Product Terms, but you may not have exclusive rights, and prompts should not reference brands, characters or real people without permission.
Canva's AI is broad, well integrated and honestly metered: the allowance per plan is published, which is more than most rivals do. The limits are the per-person meter, the trial that hides the paid allowance, and the price of the top tier. For most users, the unmetered Standard tools on Pro do the daily work, and the allowance covers the rest.
