Canva and Figma are compared constantly, and for most readers the honest answer is that they do different jobs. Canva is for publishing visual content without a designer: social posts, decks, flyers, video. Figma is for designing software: interfaces, prototypes, design systems, and the handoff to developers. The comparison became more interesting in 2025, when Figma launched Figma Buzz, a tool for producing on-brand marketing assets from templates, which is Canva's home ground. This guide compares the two on that overlap, and on price, seats, AI and education, from each vendor's own pricing page read for the US market on 9 October 2026.
The short answer
If your output is marketing and communication material and most of the people making it are not designers, choose Canva. If your output is a software product, or your design team already lives in Figma and wants to hand marketers locked templates, choose Figma, and consider Buzz for the marketers. Plenty of companies run both: designers in Figma, everyone else in Canva.
Use Figma for software design and Canva for marketing output.
Canva's free plan alone offers more than 1,000 design types and 1.6M+ templates [2], and the paid plans add Docs, Sheets, video, websites, print ordering and a social Content Planner. It is built around a finished output that someone will post, present or print.
Figma is a suite. Its Full seat includes Figma Design, Figma Make, Figma Draw, Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Motion, Figma Sites and Figma Buzz [86]. The centre of gravity is Figma Design and Dev Mode: components, auto layout, prototypes, and the specification a developer builds from. Slides, FigJam and Buzz extend that into presentations, workshops and marketing.
Price, side by side

Canva Pro costs US$144 a year or US$18 a month for one person in the US; Business US$250 a year or US$25 a month per person [2]. Figma Professional is priced per seat type on annual billing: US$16 a month for a Full seat, US$12 for a Dev seat and US$3 for a Collab seat. Organization is US$55, US$25 and US$5; Enterprise US$90 and US$35 for Full and Dev [86].
Pilot Figma Buzz on one campaign before cutting Canva seats.
Our arithmetic on the vendors' figures. A Figma Full seat on Professional is US$192 a year: US$48 more than a yearly Pro plan and US$58 less than one Business seat. A Collab seat is US$36 a year. A Dev seat is US$144, the same as yearly Pro. The comparison is not like for like, because the seats do different things, but it shows where each vendor puts its price: Figma charges most for the person who designs, and very little for the person who reviews, presents or fills in a template.
The seat model is the real difference
Canva has one kind of paid member. Everyone on a Business team uses one paid seat, whatever they do [19]. Figma splits people by role. Full seats design. Dev seats get Dev Mode plus view and comment access in design files. Collab seats get FigJam, Slides and Buzz, also with view and comment access [86]. And on any paid Figma plan, "you can let others view and comment on your files without purchasing extra seats" [86]. Canva's nearest equivalent is a share link, which can let anyone view a design, or edit it if you choose [47], but a person who needs to create in the team workspace needs a seat.
Figma Buzz was a beta on 9 October 2026.
Figma describes Buzz as a way to "Publish brand templates so your team can quickly create social media assets, display ads, one-pagers, and more." [88] Designers set which parts of a template are editable; teammates browse templates, pick one and customise the open parts [88]. On Figma's pricing page, Buzz is listed on every seat type, including the Collab seat, and marked as a beta [86].
Canva's version of the same idea is Brand Kits plus Brand Controls. A Brand Kit stores logos, colors, fonts and assets; Brand Controls restrict members to the kit's colors and fonts [40]. Business has 100 Brand Kits with approvals, so a draft can be checked before it is published [2]. The difference is in where the template comes from. In Figma, a designer builds it in Figma and hands it over. In Canva, anyone can start from millions of ready templates and the brand rules are applied on top.
Figma Buzz in detail
Figma's help centre fills in what the pricing page leaves out. Buzz "was released in open beta at Config 2025", and "While in beta, Figma Buzz is available on all seats and plans." [100] Creating assets works on any plan; "Publishing templates is available on all paid plans." [99] Figma lists the uses it has in mind: social posts in sizes for several platforms, digital ads, promotions such as fliers and email headers, event materials, internal communications, and personal cards and invitations [99].
Templates are where Buzz differs from Canva's approach. A designer can build a template from component sets and component properties connected to the design system, or with variable modes that hold colour themes or localised versions inside one template [100]. Text layers can be named to tell the person filling in the template what belongs there. That is a stricter model than Canva's: in Buzz the marketer works inside a structure the design team defined, while in Canva the marketer picks from a public library and the brand kit nudges the result.
Buzz has its own AI tools. Figma lists rewriting text in a different tone, translating, shortening to fit, generating and editing images from a prompt, removing backgrounds, improving low-resolution images and isolating an object so it can be moved or reused; "While in beta, Figma Buzz and its AI tools are available to all seat types." [101]
Canva AI allowances are per person; Figma's purchased credits can be pooled.
A team with one designer and four marketers who produce social assets. Our arithmetic at US list prices, annual billing.
- All on Canva Business: five seats, US$1,250 a year.
- Designer on a Figma Full seat, marketers on Collab seats using Buzz: US$192 plus four times US$36, US$336 a year.
- Designer in Figma, marketers on Canva Business: US$192 plus US$1,000, US$1,192 a year.
The Figma-only route is cheapest by a wide margin, US$914 a year less than five Canva seats. It depends on two things we cannot verify from a pricing page: whether Buzz, still labelled beta, covers the marketers' work, and whether the designer has time to build every template the team needs. Canva's library means the marketers can start without waiting for anyone.
What happens after the beta
The cheap route depends on the beta. Figma's pricing page lists Buzz on Full, Dev and Collab seats, and its help centre says Buzz is on all seats and plans "while in beta" [100]. Figma's Slides page says its AI features are "currently free while in beta, but usage limits may apply" [106]. Neither page says what Buzz will cost once it leaves beta. If you plan to replace Canva seats with Figma Collab seats, budget for the possibility that Buzz, or its AI, moves to a higher seat or a separate charge, and keep the Canva subscription monthly until you know.
Seats you do not pay for
Figma has a free seat type. "View seats are free and do not need to be purchased." [103] An admin can move someone to a View seat, which gives view and comment access across Figma's products, and the paid seat becomes available for someone else [102]. Canva Business has no equivalent inside the team: every member uses a paid seat [19]. People who only need to look at designs are better served by a Canva share link than by a seat.
Adding people mid-year
The two vendors bill new people differently. On Figma Professional, seats added during an annual term are billed as "a separate monthly subscription for those seats at the monthly price" [86]. On Canva Business, it depends on the billing model your team is on. With seat billing, seats are billed in the next cycle "even if an invite hasn’t been accepted yet", and yearly plans are invoiced every three months for seats added since the last bill [98]. Neither vendor makes a mid-year hire free; Canva also says seats removed after they are paid are not refunded [10].
Renewal and seat changes
Both vendors give you a moment before renewal to fix the seat count, in different ways. Figma shows a banner 30 days before an annual Professional plan renews, and from then you can add or remove seats by type for the next term [103]. Canva emails Business admins before charging for members added mid-term on a yearly plan, and on seat billing you reduce the seat count yourself before the billing date [2] [98]. In both cases the cheapest seat is the one you remove before the invoice.
AI: credits against allowances
Figma counts AI in credits. Starter gets 150 AI credits a day, up to 500 a month. A Professional Full seat adds 3,000 a month, Organization 3,500 and Enterprise 4,250; Dev and Collab seats add 500 [86]. Extra credits can be bought "for your whole team to share", on pay-as-you-go or a subscription [86].
Canva counts AI in estimated uses per tier: up to 20 on Free, 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses on Pro, 400 or 40 on Business, with Standard tools unmetered on paid plans [4]. Canva's allowances are personal and never pooled [4]; Figma's purchased credits are pooled across the team. If one person on your team does most of the generating, that difference matters more than the headline numbers.
Education
Both vendors are free in schools, but not for the same people. Figma's education plan is free for students and teachers, and names K-12 educators, higher education faculty and students [87]. Canva Education is free for eligible K-12 teachers, their students and districts [25]; universities use Canva Campus, priced on Enterprise terms with a staff-licence minimum [29]. A university course on interface design will find Figma free and Canva not.
Presentations, websites and prototypes
Both vendors now make presentations and websites. Figma Slides builds decks inside Figma, with design-system components available [106], and Figma Sites publishes websites designed in Figma; Sites is a beta and available on Full seats [86]. Figma Make turns prompts into working prototypes and apps [108]. Canva covers presentations, websites and documents for people who start from a template, and its AI tool for building mini apps and websites had more than 10 million monthly users by February 2026, according to the company [80]. The split is the same as everywhere else in this comparison: Figma's versions assume a designer, Canva's assume anyone.
Templates, assets and the blank page
Canva's paid plans include 3.6M+ templates and 141M+ premium photos, videos, graphics and audio [2]. That library is the product for most of its users: you start from something 80% right. Figma's Starter plan includes UI kits and templates [86], and its community shares files, but Figma assumes you will design. Canva assumes you will adapt.
Education in detail
Figma's education offer is broad. Teachers and students over 13 can sign up, verify their status and get "free access to the Figma Professional tier", and schools and districts can get the Enterprise tier [87]. Figma says its products are "100% free for students, educators and schools" [87]. Canva Education is also free and covers K-12 teachers, students and districts, with FERPA and COPPA compliance and no AI training on Education content [26]. The gap is higher education: Figma is free for university students and faculty, while Canva's university plan, Campus, is bought by the institution on Enterprise terms [29].
Collaboration and review
Both support real-time co-editing and comments. Figma's edge is review without a seat: anyone on a paid plan can invite others to view and comment for free [86]. Canva's edge is approvals on Business, built into the publishing flow [2], and a Content Planner that schedules finished designs to social platforms [33]. Figma does not publish to social networks.
Developer handoff and building software
This is Figma's territory, and Canva does not try to compete. Dev Mode gives developers inspection, specs and code-ready values, on a Dev seat at US$12 a month on Professional [86]. Canva's developer surface goes the other way: APIs that let other products create and autofill Canva designs. If your designs become software, the answer is Figma.
Roles and approvals
Figma manages people through seat types and file permissions: the seat decides which products someone can use, permissions decide which files they can open and what they can do there [102]. Canva manages people through roles. A team owner controls settings and members; a team admin manages members, content, publishing settings, design approvals, Brand Kits and Brand Controls; on larger plans an organisation brand designer maintains Brand Kits and Brand Templates across teams [120]. Canva's design approvals require review before publishing, and Enterprise adds multiple approvers and group reviewers [121]. For a marketing team, Canva's roles map onto the people who publish; Figma's seats map onto the tools people use.
Where Canva wins
- People who are not designers produce publishable work fastest in Canva.
- The template and stock library is far larger, and it is included.
- Social scheduling, print ordering, Docs and Sheets are in the same product.
- Schools and nonprofits get it free, with team tools.
- Reviewers rate it highly for ease: 4.73 on GetApp from 13,458 ratings [78].
Where Figma wins
- Designing software interfaces, prototypes and design systems.
- Developer handoff through Dev Mode.
- Cheap seats for people who only review, present or use templates.
- Free viewing and commenting for anyone on a paid plan.
- Free for university students and faculty.
- AI credits that a team can buy into one shared pool.
Frequently asked questions
Is Figma cheaper than Canva?+
Per person it depends on the seat. A Figma Full seat is US$192 a year on Professional, more than Canva Pro's US$144 and less than Canva Business's US$250; a Collab seat is US$36 a year.
Can Figma replace Canva for marketing?+
Figma Buzz lets designers publish locked brand templates for teammates, which covers part of what Canva does; Canva's template library, Docs, Sheets, print and social scheduling are broader.
They are not substitutes. A marketing team with no designer should pick Canva and not look back. A product team should pick Figma and not try to make Canva do interface work. The live question is for companies that already pay for Figma: whether Figma Buzz can replace Canva seats for marketers. At US$3 a month per Collab seat on Professional the arithmetic is compelling. Test it on one campaign before cancelling anything, and remember that Buzz was still a beta on 9 October 2026.
