People look for Figma alternatives for three reasons: price, a bill they did not expect, or a job Figma is too big or too narrow for. Our Trustpilot sample reflects the second most: 32 of 100 reviews concern billing, seats or cancellation, and 15 concern AI credits [167]. This page sorts the alternatives by the job you need done, using each vendor's own pages as read in October 2026.

How we chose

We included tools that replace a specific part of what Figma does: the design editor, the whiteboard, the prototyping tool, the website builder, the presentation tool, or the prompt-to-app builder. Every price is the vendor's published list price, with the billing period the page states. Where a page served us a currency other than US dollars, or did not make the billing period clear, we say so.

We did not test the tools hands-on. Everything here comes from the vendors' published pages and Figma's own documentation.

💡
Toolkit tip

Price the one module you use, not the whole suite.

## What you give up by leaving

Before choosing, list what Figma does for you. One Full seat covers Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, Slides, Make, Draw, Motion and Sites [2]. A free View seat lets stakeholders comment and inspect [3]. The MCP server feeds design context to coding agents [120].

Most alternatives replace one of those. Few replace two. Replacing several usually means paying several vendors, and losing the single file system that lets a FigJam board, a design and a deck link to each other.

Penpot: the open-source design editor

Penpot is the closest like-for-like editor and the only open-source one here. Its hosted Professional plan costs nothing; the Unlimited plan is US$7 per editor a month with a cap of US$175 a month whatever the team size; and Enterprise is US$25 per member [171]. A Private Server plan starts at US$50,000 a year, and discounts exist for nonprofits, education and open-source projects [171].

By our arithmetic, the US$175 cap means a team of 25 or more pays no more than 25 editors would. Penpot runs in the browser at design.penpot.app or on your own server with basic Docker knowledge [213].

💡
Toolkit tip

Export files before downgrading Figma.

## What Penpot does differently

Penpot's layouts are built on CSS Flexbox and Grid, so designers and developers describe layout in the same terms [223]. Design tokens follow the W3C Design Tokens Community Group draft format [215], and components support variants [216]. Developers get an inspect mode with measurements, properties and code [218].

Its file format is open: a .penpot file is a ZIP archive of readable JSON and media [220]. Penpot Enterprise adds organizations, an Admin Console for the owner, and paid modules of controls, including single sign-on [221] [222]. Penpot also has an MCP server that lets an AI client read and modify files [224]. For teams leaving Figma, Penpot publishes a migration guide and an exporter plugin for Figma; Figma's auto layout becomes Flex and Grid [214].

Sketch: the native Mac editor

Sketch costs US$12 per editor a month billed yearly on Standard, US$24 on Professional and US$44 on Enterprise [172]. It also sells a Mac-only license for US$120 per seat with a year of updates, after which the last version keeps working [199].

It has no free plan but a 30-day trial without a card, free viewers who can inspect and download assets, a year of free access for verified students and educators, and a 50% nonprofit discount [172] [195]. Its editor requires macOS Sequoia or newer [212].

⚠️
Watch out

AI credit units differ between tools and cannot be compared directly.

## Sketch's AI comes without credits

Sketch runs a local MCP server on the Mac that connects Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex and other clients, and says there are "no tokens to buy, no extra tiers, and no add-ons" [189]. You pay your AI provider directly.

For a team whose main Figma complaint is the credit meter, that is the cleanest answer on this list. No meter, no surprise. Figma imports .sketch files, so the Sketch-to-Figma direction is the easier migration [185].

Canva: for people who are not designers

If the people asking for Figma mostly need social posts, decks and one-pagers, Canva is the simpler buy. Canva Pro is for one person; Canva Business is priced per person [170].

Plan Per month, monthly billing
Canva Pro $18
Canva Business $25

Canva's editor is drag-and-drop with templates; it does not do component-based product design or developer handoff. Figma's own answer for this job is Figma Buzz, free on all seats while in beta [3].

Framer: design that publishes as a website

Framer is a site builder that designers use like a canvas. Its yearly-billed plans run from a free tier with 500 AI credits to try and 1GB of bandwidth, through Basic at US$10 a month and Pro at US$30 a month, with additional editors at US$20 a month and free viewers [174].

Basic allows 30 pages, 2 CMS collections and 50GB of bandwidth; Pro allows 150 pages, 10 collections, 100GB, staging and branching, with A/B testing as an add-on [174]. It competes with Figma Sites, still a beta on Full seats [2].

Webflow: the production website platform

Webflow is the heavier website option, and every plan, the free one included, lists Webflow AI and Cloud app hosting [180]. The free Starter plan allows 2 static pages, 1GB of bandwidth and 50 form submissions; Basic is US$15 a month billed yearly with 300 static pages and 10GB; Premium is US$25 a month billed yearly with the CMS [180]. An MCP server is listed on every plan [180].

A Team plan starts at US$2,500 a month on an annual contract [180]. Choose Webflow over Figma Sites when the site needs a mature CMS, form handling and hosting you can rely on today.

Miro: the whiteboard

If the Figma product your team uses most is FigJam, Miro is the main alternative. Its free plan keeps three editable boards; Starter costs US$8 per member a month billed yearly and adds unlimited private boards and visitor editing without sign-in; Business is US$20 per member a month billed yearly [175].

Miro advertises 250+ integrations and an MCP server connection to Claude, Cursor or Copilot [175]. Its Enterprise plan is custom-priced from 30 members [175]. FigJam is included with every Figma seat [9], so leaving for Miro only saves money if nobody needs Figma Design. Figma imports Miro boards into FigJam from a PDF export [115].

Mural: the facilitated whiteboard

Mural's free plan includes three editable murals; Team+ is US$9.99 per member a month billed annually or US$12 monthly, and Business US$17.99 billed annually [182]. It leans towards workshops and facilitation, with rooms, unlimited guests on Business, and enterprise workspaces [182]. Its listed integrations include Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom, Jira Cloud, Google Workspace and Slack [182].

Figma also imports Mural content into FigJam [187].

UXPin: code-based prototyping

UXPin builds prototypes from coded components. Its Core plan is US$49 per seat a month on monthly billing, saving US$240 a year when billed yearly; Growth is US$69 [177]. Core includes 200 AI credits a month, conditional logic, variables and 7-day version history; Growth adds design systems, roles and a Storybook integration [177].

UXPin publishes the price of extra AI credits on its pricing page, from 200 credits for US$13 a month [177]. Figma shows its add-on prices only in the admin dashboard [96].

ProtoPie: high-fidelity interaction

ProtoPie targets prototypes that behave like real apps, including hardware and sensors. Its free plan allows two prototypes of eight scenes with 50MB of storage; the page lists Basic at US$25 a month for one seat and Pro at US$47 per editor a month, with a yearly option that saves up to 26% [178]. Enterprise needs at least three seats [178].

Teams typically pair it with a design editor rather than replacing one. It is a specialist.

Axure RP: specification-heavy prototypes

Axure RP is a desktop tool for functional, logic-heavy prototypes and documentation. The page lists Axure RP Pro at US$29 a month per user and Team at US$49, with monthly and annual options; every subscription includes unlimited publishing on Axure Cloud [179]. Qualifying students and educators can use the Team edition free, and businesses can buy with a purchase order [179].

It suits enterprise UX teams that write detailed specifications. Few others need it. It is not a visual design editor in Figma's sense.

Lovable: prompt-to-app

If the reason you came to Figma is Figma Make, compare Lovable. It sells credits for building, and its pricing page lists example prompts and their costs, such as "Make the button gray" at 0.50 credits [176]. Plan Mode costs one credit per message, and users can see each message's cost in the history afterwards [176].

Paid Lovable subscriptions also include daily grants of five build credits and a monthly grant of 20 Cloud credits [176]. Lovable's monthly plan credits expire two months after issue [176]; Figma's seat credits reset every month [94]. Figma Make's cost is also known only after a prompt runs, and Figma's own examples start at about 30 credits for a font change [94]. The two credit units are not comparable. Test both.

v0: prompt-to-app from Vercel

v0 has a free plan limited to seven messages a day, which already includes visual editing in Design Mode and GitHub sync, Plus at US$30 per user a month and Business at US$100 per user a month [181]. Paid plans include US$30 of monthly credits per user and US$2 of free daily credits on login, and Business sets training opt-out by default [181].

v0 publishes its model token rates per million tokens [181]. It deploys to Vercel and syncs with GitHub, so it suits developers; Figma Make starts from a design context.

Pitch: presentations

For teams that mainly use Figma Slides, Pitch is the presentation-first alternative, with a free plan, AI credits and team plans [183]. Its pricing page served us euros, so we do not quote a dollar price. Figma Slides is included with every paid seat [16] and imports PowerPoint files [188].

A side-by-side for the core job

Tool Design editor price, per editor a month, billed yearly
Figma Professional, Full seat $16
Sketch Standard $12
Penpot Unlimited $7
Penpot Professional (hosted) Free

Our arithmetic for a team of five editors over a year: US$960 on Figma Professional, US$720 on Sketch Standard, and US$420 on Penpot Unlimited.

AI pricing compared

The credit units differ, but the transparency does not have to. UXPin lists the price of each extra AI credit package on its pricing page [177]. Framer shows the monthly AI credit options for each plan, from 1,000 on Basic [174]. v0 publishes token rates per million tokens for each model [181].

Figma shows the price of extra credits only in the admin dashboard [96], and Sketch sells no AI credits at all [189]. If predictable AI cost is your criterion, the published-rate tools are easier to budget.

Free developer handoff

Several tools let developers inspect without a paid seat. Sketch invites developers to inspect, copy CSS, download assets and export tokens for free [192]. Penpot's inspect mode gives measurements, properties and code [218].

Figma's free View seat includes basic inspection and code copying [3]; full Dev Mode needs a Dev seat at US$12 a month annually on Professional [2].

Ready to put Figma to the test?Try Figma →

Open files and self-hosting

Penpot's .penpot format is an open ZIP of JSON and media [220], and Penpot can run on your own server [213]. Sketch says its file format is open and local files are supported [196]; its Private Cloud plan lets customers choose a hosting location [172]. Axure offers on-premises hosting for Enterprise [179].

Figma files can be saved as local copies in Figma's own format [153], and EU hosting exists [84], but there is no self-hosted Figma.

Education and nonprofit programs

Figma's Education plan is free for verified students and educators, and Figma offers no nonprofit discount [3]. Sketch gives a year of free access to students and educators and 50% off for nonprofits [195] [172]. Penpot offers nonprofit, education and open-source discounts [171], and Axure gives qualifying schools the Team edition free [179].

For a charity design team, Sketch or Penpot is the cheaper path on the published terms. Figma offers nothing here.

Figma's own replacements

Several alternatives exist because Figma did not cover a job until recently. Figma now has its own answer in most of them: FigJam against Miro and Mural, Slides against Pitch, Sites against Framer, Make against Lovable and v0, and Buzz against Canva [2].

Each is included in a Figma seat, but three of them, Sites, Buzz and Motion, are betas [2]. If the job matters today, a mature specialist may be safer than a Figma beta. Betas change.

Where each one runs

Penpot runs in Chrome, Firefox and Safari-family browsers, or on your own server [213]. Sketch's editor is a Mac app, with a web app for viewing, inspecting and commenting [201]. Axure RP subscriptions work on any number of PCs and Macs [179]. Framer, Webflow, Miro, Mural, UXPin, Lovable and v0 are browser products.

Figma edits in the browser on any operating system [36]. If even one designer is on Windows, Sketch is out. That rule is absolute.

Which alternative for which job

Design editor on any OS, open source: Penpot. Design editor on Mac, simple pricing, bring-your-own AI: Sketch. Marketing assets without designers: Canva. Websites: Framer or Webflow. Whiteboards: Miro or Mural. Code-based or logic-heavy prototypes: UXPin, ProtoPie or Axure. Prompt-to-app: Lovable or v0.

When staying is cheaper

Figma's seat model can be cheaper than a stack of alternatives. A Collab seat covering FigJam and Slides costs US$3 a month annually on Professional [2], against US$8 for Miro Starter [175].

A View seat is free [90]. Before switching, check whether reassigning seats solves the cost problem: most of the billing complaints in our sample describe seats nobody meant to buy [167].

When leaving makes sense

Leave when nobody on the team designs software interfaces, when every designer is on a Mac and wants a native app, when an open-source or self-hosted tool is a requirement, or when the AI credit bill has become the largest line. Penpot answers the third case directly [171]; Sketch answers the fourth [189].

How to leave cleanly

Save local copies of the files you need [153]. Check your cancellation window first: Professional runs to the end of the paid period, and online Organization plans can only be canceled in the last 30 days of the term [137] [59].

Downgrading to Starter locks teams over the limits, unpublishes Sites and removes custom domains from Make apps [137]. Export before you downgrade, not after. Order matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to Figma?+

Penpot: it is open source, its hosted Professional plan costs nothing, and it can be self-hosted.

What is the best Figma alternative for Mac?+

Sketch, a native Mac editor at US$12 per editor a month billed yearly, or US$120 for a Mac-only licence.

## Verdict

There is no single Figma replacement, because Figma is now several products. Penpot is the closest editor, Sketch the closest paid one, and the rest replace one module each. Price the module you actually use before you move the whole team.
