Figma is where most website and web-app designs are made in 2026, from a freelancer's landing page to an agency's client system. For web designers the case rests on four things: responsive layout tools, prototypes that feel like a real site, a handoff that developers can actually use, and, newer, the option to publish straight from Figma. This guide covers what web designers get, what they pay, and where the limits are, from Figma's own pages read on 9 October 2026.

Why web designers use Figma

Figma's web-design page calls it the online platform where people design websites together, from wireframe to design to prototype to development [29]. It runs in the browser on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS devices, and autosaves with version history [31].

For a web team, the browser matters. Clients, developers and copywriters can open the same file without installing anything.

💡
Toolkit tip

Share prototypes without the source file on Professional.

## What it costs a web designer

A freelancer needs one Full seat: US$16 a month billed annually, US$192 a year, or US$20 monthly on Professional [2]. The Full seat covers Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, Slides, Make, Draw and Sites [2].

By our arithmetic, a small agency with three designers on Full seats and two developers on Dev seats pays US$864 a year on annual Professional, against US$2,580 on Organization.

Free for clients

Clients and stakeholders who only review work can have free View seats on any paid plan, with comments on designs and prototypes [90] [3]. On Professional, prototypes can be shared on their own, without exposing the source file, and shared files can be password-protected [128].

Viewer restrictions can stop clients from copying, sharing or exporting file content [128].

💡
Toolkit tip

Switch off content training before uploading client work.

## Responsive layout with auto layout

Auto layout arranges elements by direction, spacing, padding and alignment, and adjusts when content changes; Figma's examples include buttons that resize with their labels and a webpage that fits different screen sizes [147]. Layouts can flow vertically, horizontally or in a grid [147].

Auto layout is available on all plans, including Starter [147].

Components and libraries

Components let you reuse buttons, icons and layouts; instances update when the main component changes [149]. Team libraries share components, styles and variables across files, and are a paid feature [150] [31].

For an agency, one library per client keeps every page of a site consistent. That is the habit to build.

⚠️
Watch out

Sites is a beta; published sites go offline if you downgrade.

## Variables and theming

Variables store reusable values such as colors, numbers and strings, and modes switch whole themes, such as light and dark [146]. Professional allows 10 modes per collection, Organization 20 [93].

Publishing variables to team libraries and using them in prototypes requires the Education plan or a paid plan [146].

Prototypes that feel like a site

Figma prototypes support interactions on click, hover and scroll, Smart Animate transitions, and a viewer that resizes responsively [28]. Variables, expressions and conditional logic let a prototype calculate a cart total or branch on a user's answer [146].

Figma's prototyping page quotes YETI's design director: developers who see the prototypes "know exactly how to begin developing" [28].

⚠️
Watch out

Team libraries need a paid plan.

## Video and rich media

Paid plans can add video to prototypes, from the Community or your own uploads [93]. Animated GIFs can also illustrate real website behavior [28].

Wireframes and templates

Figma's wireframe page offers Community kits such as a lo-fi wireframe kit, a mobile wireframe kit and the Relume Figma kit [33]. The web-design page points to free component-based wireframe kits built by the Community [29].

You can also generate wireframe directions with the Figma agent or turn a wireframe into a working prototype in Figma Make [33].

Agencies and guests

On Organization, people with email addresses from other companies are guests who see only what they are invited to, which suits client work [125]. In 2024 Figma announced Connected Projects to let freelancers and agencies co-edit with clients on existing seats [5].

Check with Figma's sales team how client collaboration is billed for your setup.

Collaborating with clients and writers

Stakeholders can add contextual comments directly on designs and prototypes [29]. FigJam boards sit next to the designs for sitemaps, user flows and workshops [32].

Figma has argued since 2018 that websites go faster when copy and design are written in the same file [332].

Handing off to developers

Dev Mode gives developers a focused view to inspect properties, compare changes and track designs marked ready for development [118]. It needs a Dev or Full seat; developers on free View seats get basic inspection and code copying [119].

The web-design page frames Dev Mode as the step that turns designs into a live site faster [29].

Code Connect for larger teams

On Organization and Enterprise, Code Connect links Figma components to components in your repository, so developers see real code in Dev Mode [339]. Figma's web-development page says that in Figma all design components map directly to code components [30].

For a freelancer, this is overkill. For an agency maintaining a client's design system, it is the reason to move up. Scale decides.

Publishing with Figma Sites

Sites lets you design and publish a responsive website from Figma, with breakpoints, interactions, a CMS and custom domains [109]. It is included in the Full seat and still a beta [2].

Professional plans can connect 10 custom domains, shared with Figma Make [101].

What Sites can and cannot do yet

Sites supports page, back and anchor links, cookie consent banners, Google Analytics and custom code in site settings [303] [299]. Paid plans can upload videos of up to 300MB each and 1GB per site [302].

What it lacks is published pricing for bandwidth and storage beyond the beta [3], and published sites are unpublished if the team downgrades to Starter [137].

Prompt-to-site with Figma Make

Figma's web-development page says anyone can turn a prompt into a complete website in Figma Make, code-backed and ready to ship [30]. Make kits bring library styles, npm packages and code components into Make so outputs match the product [30].

Make draws on AI credits; generating an app from scratch costs about 100 credits or more at Figma's estimate [94]. Credits add up.

Code layers on the canvas

In Sites, code layers let designers add React-based interactivity by prompting or coding [265]. Figma's own advice: start in Make when going from a prompt to an app, and use code layers when you start on the canvas and want to add interactivity to a website [265].

Building sites with Make

Figma's solution pages for freelancers and agencies say Make can generate service pages, team profiles and portfolios from prompts and publish them directly, with no coding required and a built-in editor for customization [366] [367]. Starter can try Make; advanced publishing options and integrations are on paid plans [367].

The CMS-website page says Make can connect to backends or APIs to validate CMS-driven sites with real content [368].

Make's editing tools for site builders

In July 2026 Figma added a properties panel and annotations to Make, so designers can select an element and adjust it directly or leave in-context prompts [359]. A workflow post the same month showed a designer connecting a codebase to Make, making changes directly, and taking the team through review up to the pull request [359].

For web teams, that narrows the gap between a Make prototype and the production site.

Accessibility and SEO

Sites lets you set HTML tags and roles, alt text and labels, and includes a color-contrast checker in the color picker [267]. Settings control titles, meta descriptions, social images and search-engine inclusion per page [299].

Design systems for web teams

Figma's design-systems page describes libraries that give the right teams default access, variables for light and dark contexts, and slots that let designers create new component instances without detaching them [41]. It quotes Google Cloud AI's head of UX calling Figma their single source of truth [41].

On Organization, library analytics show which components are used across teams [229]. Figma's design-systems page also promotes a check that finds components or values that do not match your library and suggests fixes [41].

Bringing live sites back into Figma

The MCP server's remote version can capture the live UI of a web app or site and send it to new or existing Figma files as editable layers, in supported clients [158]. For a redesign, that turns the current production site into a starting file.

The capture produces flat layers without library connections; Figma suggests refining them afterward with your components [121].

Fonts on the web

Designing with local fonts works in the browser with Figma's font installer or in the desktop app [185]. Publishing a site with a custom font requires uploading a WOFF or WOFF2 web font file [301].

Organizations can upload shared fonts for everyone, including Chromebook and Linux users [226].

Migrating from Sketch or other tools

Figma imports .sketch files; artboards become frames and symbols become components, while styles must be recreated [185]. Images, vectors, videos and GIFs can be imported into design files [186].

The context Figma gives web designers

Figma's resource library collects third-party statistics for web designers: more than 1.38 billion websites at the end of 2025, a median mobile homepage weight of 2,362KB, and 48% of mobile sites with good Core Web Vitals in 2025, each credited to its original source [354]. Its responsive-design guide cites a figure that 74% of users are likely to revisit a mobile-friendly site [355].

For a designer, the practical point is page weight. Heavy designs load slowly on mobile.

Responsive design guidance

Figma's responsive-design guide compares frameworks such as Bootstrap, Foundation, Tailwind CSS and Pure CSS, and walks through a responsive workflow in Figma [355]. Its web design and development guide separates front-end work, built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and frameworks such as React, Next.js, Angular and Vue, from back-end logic [358].

Designers who hand off to developers benefit from knowing which framework their developers use, because component naming and breakpoints should match.

Agencies

Figma's agency report collects case studies of studios such as Moving Brands, Flat 101 and ENNOstudio on remote collaboration, consolidated client feedback and faster turnaround [353]. Those are vendor stories. Read them as such.

The structural advantage for agencies is free View seats for clients and guests on Organization, plus one library per client [90] [125].

What reviewers in web design say

Several of the positive reviews in our Trustpilot sample come from web work: one calls Figma "the #1 tool in a web design agency" [167], another "Still the best tool to design websites and software." [167] The same sample's complaints center on billing and seats rather than design features [167].

Figma against Framer and Webflow

Framer and Webflow are site builders first. Framer's yearly-billed plans run from free to US$10 and US$30 a month with published page, CMS and bandwidth limits [174]. Webflow's Basic plan is US$15 a month billed yearly and Premium US$25 with the CMS [180].

Figma's advantage is the design process. Theirs is mature hosting with published terms.

Figma against Sketch for web design

Sketch's Standard plan costs US$12 per editor a month billed yearly and its editor runs only on macOS [172] [173]. It offers free developer handoff in the browser [192].

For a web team with Windows users or developers who want Dev Mode and MCP, Figma is the practical choice. Sketch cannot follow.

Performance on large files

Several reviews in our Trustpilot sample mention lag on large files; one web agency that stores all its website projects in Figma praised the workflow but said large design files can feel heavy on weaker computers [167]. Splitting a big site into several files, one per section or template, keeps them responsive.

Billing for project work

Web work comes in projects. On Professional, monthly billing lets you add a seat for a contractor and drop it the next month, since unassigned monthly seats are not renewed [90]. On an annual plan, seats added mid-term are billed monthly at the monthly price until you convert them [90].

Moving someone to a View seat when a project ends refunds nothing, but frees the seat for the next contractor [138].

Starter for a single landing page

A freelancer's one-page site fits within Starter's three Design or Sites files [129]. Publishing it with Sites, however, needs a paid plan [111], and Starter has no team libraries or password-protected sharing [129].

Plugins and exports

Community plugins work on every plan [93], and Figma bought the technology behind the html.to.design plugin, which turns live sites into editable frames [68]. Viewers on paid plans can export assets without a paid seat [3].

Training on client work

Content training is on by default for Starter and Professional teams [99]. For agencies holding client designs, an admin should switch it off before uploading. Do it first.

Organization and Enterprise have it off by default [99].

Designers moving closer to code

Figma's design-to-code page cites its State of the Designer 2026 report: 80% of designers who increased their AI use say it helps them collaborate across teams, and 91% say it improves the quality of their output [363]. The same page cites a rise in designers working in code from 21% to 41% in a year [363].

For web designers, that is the direction of travel: more of the site gets built where it is designed.

Who should use Figma for web design

Freelancers and agencies designing responsive sites and web apps with developers and clients in the loop. Teams that want prototypes clients can click through. Designers who want to publish simple sites without a separate builder and can accept beta terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Figma good for web design?+

Yes. It covers wireframes, responsive layout, prototypes and developer handoff, and Figma Sites can publish sites directly, still in beta.

Can I publish a website from Figma?+

Yes, with Figma Sites on a paid plan's Full seat. Starter users must upgrade to publish.

## Verdict

For web design, Figma is the default for good reasons: responsive layout, real prototypes, free client access and a developer handoff that keeps improving. Budget one Full seat per designer, keep clients on free View seats, and treat Sites as a promising publishing option rather than your only host.
