Yes, Canva is free, and not in the sense of a ten-day trial. Canva Free is a permanent plan for one person, and it is good enough that many people never pay. What it is not is the same as the paid plans with a different badge: the template library, the AI allowance, the brand tools and the storage are all smaller. This guide sets out what Canva Free includes, where it stops, which other routes are free for schools and nonprofits, and how the paid trial differs from the free plan. Everything comes from Canva's pricing page and help centre, read for the US market on 9 October 2026.

The short answer

Canva Free costs nothing, has no time limit, and includes more than 1,000 design types, 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ photos, videos, graphics and audio items, one Brand Kit limited to three colours, 5GB of storage, up to 20 AI uses a month, and access to Affinity [2]. Pro, at US$144 a year or US$18 a month in the US, unlocks the premium library and ten times the AI [2]. Teachers at eligible K-12 schools and registered nonprofits can get premium features without paying [25] [23].

💡
Toolkit tip

Start on Free and upgrade when a named limit gets in the way.

## What Canva Free includes

The pricing page lists Free's features as: an easy drag-and-drop editor with 1,000+ design types, 1.6M+ templates to start fast, 4.7M+ photos, videos, graphics and audio, one Brand Kit with three colours only, ad insights and AI ad creation, access to Affinity, 5GB of cloud storage, and up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses [2]. It is described as "For one person".

That covers most everyday jobs. It is a lot. A small business can make its social posts, a flyer, a menu, a pitch deck or a simple video on Free. A student can make presentations and posters. A volunteer can make event materials. None of them needs a card to start.

What else is free with a Canva account

Three things come with any Canva account, Free included, and are easy to miss.

Affinity. Canva owns Affinity, the professional photo editing, vector design and publishing application, and "Everyone, even Canva Free users, can use Affinity" [55]. Paid plans add Canva's AI tools inside it.

Canva Docs. Canva says Docs "is and will forever be free to access and use" on Free, Teams, Education and Enterprise accounts [73].

Websites. Free users can publish websites to a free Canva domain [118]. Custom domains need a paid plan [117].

💡
Toolkit tip

Teachers and nonprofits should apply for the free programmes first.

## What Free does not include

The premium library is the main line. Pro adds 3.6M+ templates and 141M+ premium photos, videos, graphics and audio items [2]. When you open a template that uses premium elements on Free, you can see them but need to pay or replace them to download without restriction. The other limits follow from the plan descriptions: one Brand Kit with three colours, 5GB of storage, 20 AI uses, and no social scheduling, which Canva lists for Pro and above [2] [33].

The AI allowance on Free

Canva's AI tools come in three tiers: Standard, Premium and Ultra. On paid plans, Standard tools such as Translate and Magic Write do not count against the allowance. On Free and on Pro Lite they do: "For Canva Free and Pro Lite, Standard AI tools still draw from the monthly AI allowance." [4] Free gets up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium tools and no Ultra tools [4]. The allowance on Free resets at midnight; on paid plans it resets on the billing date [4].

Twenty uses goes quickly. Image work burns it fastest. For occasional background removal or a translated caption, it is enough. Free also includes some features of Canva AI, the conversational assistant, with limited monthly usage; full access to Canva AI, its Memory Library and its connectors needs a paid plan [124].

⚠️
Watch out

The paid trial carries Free's AI allowance.

## Which AI tools count on Free

Canva names the tools in each tier. Standard tools include the Image Upscaler, image generation with Canva AI and Magic Formulas. Premium tools include Magic Layers, generating a design or an image with Canva AI, building interactive experiences with Canva Code, generating elements such as shapes, 3D objects, charts and forms, the music and sound effect generator, and the form generator [4]. Ultra tools, the most expensive, include conversational design with Canva AI 2.0 and creating video clips [4].

On Free, Standard and Premium tools share the 20-use allowance and Ultra tools are not available. Premium AI tools in Affinity, such as Generative Fill, are not available to Free accounts [4]. Premium and Ultra tools are listed for Pro, Teams, Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit plans [4].

Brand Kit on Free

Free includes one Brand Kit, limited to three colours [2]. That is enough to keep a logo and a basic palette handy. It is not enough for a brand with several typefaces, a full colour system or more than one brand. Pro has five Brand Kits; Business has 100 with approvals [2].

⚠️
Watch out

Lifetime Canva deals are not legitimate.

## Social media on Free

Free users can link one social account at a time per platform [33]. Scheduling posts through Content Planner is listed for Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofits users [33]. So Free lets you design for social media and share a finished design, but a posting calendar is a paid feature. If you only post a few times a week by hand, that is not a problem. If you plan a month of content in one sitting, it is.

Storage on Free

Free includes 5GB of cloud storage [2]. Images and documents rarely fill it. Video does. Plan for that. A creator who uploads raw footage for short-form edits will reach the limit long before a designer who works with photos and text. Pro raises it to 100GB [2].

Free users can build a website in the editor and publish it to a free .canva.site address; a mobile website or link-in-bio template publishes to a canva.link address instead [118]. A free domain once used by another brand cannot be reused, even if inactive, which Canva says is to prevent phishing [118]. Connecting your own domain requires Pro, Teams, Business or Education [119]. For a portfolio, an event page or a link-in-bio page, Free is enough.

Canva's plan comparison lists custom short links for sharing designs: none on Free, up to 5 on Pro, up to 100 on Business and unlimited on Enterprise [2]. If you share many designs with clients by link and want them to look tidy, that is a small but real Pro feature.

Printing on Free

Canva Print is open to Free users: you design, order and get the print delivered, with automated proofing before the order [75]. Orders ship within the same country, or within the same region in Europe [76]. Business gets 10% off print orders [2]; Free and Pro pay the list price.

The free trial is a different thing

Canva Pro and Canva Business both have a free trial, and it is easy to confuse with the free plan. The trial gives you the paid plan's templates, stock, brand tools and team features for a limited time, after which your card is charged unless you cancel [11]. Three details matter:

The length of the trial is shown in your Billing settings; we did not find it stated in the help text we read.

How to avoid an unwanted charge after a trial

Canva sends an email reminder before the trial ends [11]. Its billing runs on UTC, so in US time zones the charge can arrive a day before the date you expect [13]. Cancel from Billing at least two days before the end date if you do not want to continue. Once charged, a refund is unlikely: "In most cases, Canva subscriptions aren’t refundable" [12].

Free for schools: Canva Education

Canva Education is free for eligible K-12 teachers, their students, and qualified school districts and institutions [26]. Canva states that it is "100% free" with no paywalls [2]. It includes most premium features plus classroom tools such as LMS integrations and assignments, and districts can get enterprise-level security, SSO and training at no cost [2]. Students join when a teacher invites them [25].

Universities are different. Canva Campus is priced on Enterprise terms, and institutions must buy a minimum number of staff licences; once that threshold is met, all students get premium access at no extra cost [2].

Free for nonprofits: Canva for Nonprofits

Registered nonprofits, charities and qualifying social-impact or public-health organisations can get "a free subscription with all the premium features of Canva Pro, plus team and collaboration tools, for one team of up to 50 users" [2]. Extra seats are 50% off on Canva Enterprise [23]. Applications are made from Billing, with a document proving the organisation's status, and are usually answered within 72 hours [23].

What free content you may use commercially

Free content in Canva is licensed for commercial use under Canva's Content License Agreement: the licence for Free Content is perpetual, non-exclusive and worldwide [43]. You can sell designs you make with it, such as printed merchandise, as long as the product is an original design rather than Canva content resold as it is [42]. Pro content has extra conditions, including a single-design licence [43].

Selling what you make: ownership and print-on-demand

Canva's help centre puts it simply: "Generally speaking, if you’re the creator of an original design, you’re also its copyright holder." [44] If your design uses stock content from Canva's library, your ownership is subject to those third-party rights, because Canva gives you a licence to the content, not ownership of it [44].

That matters most on print-on-demand sites. Some print services ask you to confirm that you own the copyright in every design you upload. If so, Canva says you cannot use Canva content in those designs, because you only hold a licence; if the service only asks you to confirm you have the right to use the design, it is fine within Canva's licence terms [44]. For AI images, Canva says that between you and Canva you own images made with its AI image tools, though whether they are protected by copyright depends on local law [44]. Read your print service's terms before uploading a Canva design for sale. Every time.

Eligibility for the free education plan

Canva Education covers certified K-12 teachers in a current teaching position, K-12 school librarians, learning support assistants and teachers, curriculum specialists, and certified teachers at technical or vocational schools serving primary or secondary students, as well as K-12 schools themselves [25]. Canva also lists roles that are not eligible, so check the guidelines before applying. Students cannot sign up on their own; a teacher invites them [2].

Applying as a nonprofit

If you choose "Non-profit or charity" when you sign up, Canva shows a homepage alert for 30 days with a link to the application; otherwise apply from Billing [23]. Choose the right category, such as Registered Nonprofit, Social Impact Organisation or Public Health Organisation, use an email on the organisation's domain where possible, and upload a document accepted for your country. If Canva cannot confirm your affiliation, a signed letter of affiliation or a volunteer ID showing your name, role and organisation usually fixes it [23].

When Free is enough

Free is enough for an individual who makes a handful of designs a week, uses templates as a starting point, works mostly with their own photos, needs only a light touch of AI, and posts to social media by hand. It is also enough to learn Canva properly before deciding whether to pay.

When Pro is worth it

Pro is worth it when the premium library saves you time every week, when you need more than three brand colours or more than one Brand Kit, when you schedule social posts in batches, when you edit video and need the storage, or when 20 AI uses a month is not enough. At US$144 a year, Pro costs US$12 a month on yearly billing; our arithmetic.

When Business is worth it

Business is for teams, or for one person who needs double Pro's AI allowance, ad performance insights, Flourish charts or 100 Brand Kits [2]. It costs US$250 a year or US$25 a month per person. For a solo user who only wants to remove Free's limits, Pro is the plan.

Common misunderstandings

Myth: Canva Free is a trial. It is not. It has no end date. The trial is a separate, time-limited test of Pro or Business.

Myth: the trial shows what Pro's AI can do. It does not. Trials carry the Free allowance [11].

Myth: a Pro account can be shared with a colleague. No. "Only one person can use a Canva Pro account." [2]

Myth: lifetime Pro deals are a bargain. They are not. Canva says it "doesn’t offer lifetime plans", and plans bought from unauthorised sellers can lead to suspension and loss of designs [21].

## Our read

Canva Free is one of the most generous free plans in software, and it is a real product, not a demo. Most people should start on it and stay until a specific limit gets in the way. When that happens, name the limit: if it is the library or the AI, take Pro; if it is a second person, look at Business; if you teach or work for a nonprofit, apply for the free programme first.
