Yes, Figma has a free plan, and for some people it is all they will ever need. It is called Starter, it has no end date on Figma's pages, and it includes most of Figma's products. It is also built to be outgrown: three shared files per product, a monthly AI allowance sized for trying features, and no Dev Mode. Students and teachers can get much more for free, and on paid plans anyone who only views and comments costs nothing.

Everything below comes from Figma's own pages, read on 9 October 2026.

The short answer

Figma is free on the Starter plan, free for verified students and educators on the Education plan, and free for viewers on any paid plan [3]. It is not free for teams that need more than three shared files per product, team libraries, Dev Mode, or regular AI use.

The paid plans start at US$16 per Full seat a month billed annually, or US$20 monthly [2]. Tax is extra.

Toolkit tip

Turn off content training on a Starter team before uploading client work.

## What Starter includes

Starter gives access to Figma Design, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Draw, Figma Sites, Figma Buzz and Figma Make [129]. Dev Mode is not available on Starter [129].

Figma describes Starter as right for people who are working on personal projects, need basic design, presentation and brainstorming tools, or want to try Figma products [129]. That is an honest description of the limits that follow. Read them first.

The three-file rule

A Starter team has one folder. Inside it you can keep three Figma Design or Figma Sites files in total, three FigJam files and three Figma Slides files [129]. There is no limit on Figma Buzz files, and none on Figma Make files, though Make use is capped by the AI credit allowance [129].

The pricing FAQ adds a page limit: co-editing on up to three files, with a limit of three pages per file [3]. The Starter plan overview does not mention pages [129]. Plan for both limits until Figma says otherwise. Three is small.

💡
Toolkit tip

Apply for Education before paying if you are a student or teacher.

## What you can design for free

The plan comparison shows what Starter keeps from the paid editor: auto layout, components, prototypes, basic inspection of design and prototype properties, and Community resources such as widgets, plugins and files [93]. Those cover most of what a student or a solo designer learns first.

What Starter lacks is the system layer: team libraries for components, styles and variables, variable modes, video in prototypes, and variables, expressions and conditional logic in prototypes [93].

Drafts are unlimited, but private

On Starter you can create as many drafts as you like [129]. Drafts are files that have not been moved into a folder, and they stay private to you and anyone you share them with [153].

The catch is collaboration. On Starter, drafts can be shared with unlimited viewers but do not support co-editing, and collaborators can be invited to drafts only with view access [153] [129]. Real-time co-editing happens only in the three team files. Drafts are solo.

⚠️
Watch out

K-12 Education users get no AI tools or Figma Make.

## Where the limit came from

The three-file rule dates from April 2021. Before that, Starter capped teams at two editors; Figma removed the editor cap and introduced a maximum of three files in the team space, each with three pages [8].

Figma said it tested the change with thousands of users, that 87% were excited by unlimited editors, and that collaboration rose 29% without the two-editor limit [8]. Its reasoning was that most users actively collaborate on two or three files at a time [8].

Version history and other limits

Starter keeps 30 days of version history; every paid plan keeps it without limit [93]. There are no team libraries, no SSO or advanced security settings, and no template publishing in Slides or Buzz [129].

On Starter your single folder is open to every member of the team; private folders need a paid plan [129].

⚠️
Watch out

Starter Make apps can go public only with a Community publish.

## What happens if you go over

A Starter team that exceeds its limits gets a Locked label until files are moved or removed [153]. The same rule applies when a paid team downgrades: if it has more files than Starter allows, Figma prevents editing until the files fit or move to drafts [137].

So the free plan is not a trap. It is a ceiling. Count your shared files before you rely on it.

AI on the free plan

Starter users get 500 AI credits a month with a daily limit of 150 [94]. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over [94].

Figma's AI FAQ says most standalone AI tools require a paid plan, but most are available through the Figma agent, which is available on all plans [102]. AI image tools are not part of Starter [129]. By our arithmetic, 500 credits cover about five from-scratch app generations in Figma Make at Figma's own estimate of 100 credits each.

Image tools: two answers

The Starter overview lists no AI image tools on the plan [129]. The help article on generating and editing images says those tools are available on paid plans and on the Starter plan in Figma Design [135].

If you plan to rely on image generation on Starter, try it in a draft first. Either way, each image draws on the 500 monthly credits, at 2 to 16 credits an image depending on the model [94].

Figma Make on Starter

Starter is a free way to explore Figma Make, with two limits: Starter teams cannot use team libraries to give Make style context, and they can publish a Make app to the public web only if they also publish it to the Figma Community [104].

Make files created on Starter are multiplayer, so others can watch and comment [104]. That is more than Dev, Collab or View seats on paid plans get in drafts [104].

Sites, Buzz and Motion on Starter

Figma's pages disagree on Sites. The Starter overview lists Figma Sites among Starter products but says there is no publishing [129]. The AI FAQ says Starter includes code layers in Sites [102]. The pricing FAQ says Sites is available on the Full seat for paid plans and that a limited Starter experience is coming soon [3].

Buzz is free for all seats and plans while in beta [3]. Motion can be tried on Starter: you can animate, create motion variables and components and export, but not publish motion systems, use agent-assisted motion or export high-resolution video [3].

Dev Mode and inspection for free

Dev Mode is not on Starter [129]. On paid plans, anyone with a free View seat can still inspect: view measurements and property values, copy CSS, iOS and Android code, and export assets [3].

For a developer on a client's paid plan, that free inspection is often enough. Full Dev Mode needs a Dev or Full seat [119].

Curious how Figma feels in practice?Try Figma →

The MCP server for free

Starter users can connect coding agents through Figma's MCP server, but only for up to 20 tool calls a month [155]. A Dev or Full seat on Professional raises that to 200 a day [155].

One Trustpilot reviewer summed up the experience bluntly: on Starter, "cant use the severely limited MCP's" [167].

Free imports from other tools

Importing works on every plan. You can bring PowerPoint files into Figma Slides, Miro and Mural boards into FigJam from a PDF export, and .sketch files into Figma Design [188] [115] [187] [185].

Imports count toward Starter's file limits once they move into the team folder, so a migration test is best done in drafts.

Who trains on free files

Content training is on by default for Starter teams; an admin can switch it off at any time in team settings [99]. Switching it off stops new content and edits from being used, not content already used [56].

If you put client work on a free plan, change that setting first. It takes a minute.

Support on the free plan

Starter support begins with Fig, an AI chatbot, and moves to the community forum if you need a person; email support is for paid plans [152]. Figma offers no phone or live chat on any plan [152].

Free seats on paid plans

On Professional, Organization and Enterprise, View seats are free and do not need to be purchased [90]. A View seat can view and comment on files, export, and see redlines [3].

Viewers pay nothing. This is where most of Figma's free use actually happens: stakeholders, clients and developers on someone else's paid plan. The pricing page notes you can let others view and comment without buying extra seats [2].

What a free viewer cannot do

A View seat cannot edit Figma Design files and has no Dev Mode, only basic inspection [92]. It can still create drafts: View users can try Figma Make and AI tools in their own drafts [104] [103].

What they make there stays private. Make files created on View, Dev or Collab seats cannot be shared until the person gets a Full seat [104].

The apps are free to download

Figma's desktop app is available for macOS, Windows and Windows on Arm, with beta apps and a mobile app listed on the same page [36]. Downloading costs nothing; what you can do inside depends on your plan and seat. The seat decides.

Free for students and educators

Figma for Education gives verified students and educators free access [98]. Higher-education students and educators, approved bootcamps and high schools get the Professional plan; K-12 students and educators get the Enterprise plan through their school or district [98].

Education users get 3,000 AI credits a month, the same as a Professional Full seat [97]. They cannot buy more without moving to a paid team [97].

FigJam for free

FigJam is included with all seats on every plan, and Starter keeps three FigJam files [9] [129]. Figma's Jamboard page says all FigJam plans, the free plan included, get unlimited access to thousands of widgets, integrations and templates [12].

That page targets former Google Jamboard users, offering an import tool and Google Meet support, and points schools to the Education plan for a free transition [12].

Figma Slides for free

Slides is on Starter with three files [129]. In November 2024 Figma's pricing page said Slides would be free on Starter in early 2025 and cost US$3 or US$5 a month on paid plans [4]; since March 2025 it has been part of every paid seat [5].

PowerPoint decks can be imported on any plan, with some objects such as videos, tables and animations left out [188].

The Education fine print

AI tools, including Figma Make and the agent, are available only to higher-education and bootcamp users, not K-12 or high-school users [98]. Each eligible Education user can publish one Sites file, without a custom domain [98].

Access lasts one year for students and two for educators in higher education, and six months for bootcamp students, according to the Education help article [98]. The pricing FAQ gives two years for K-12 and higher education [3]. Verification runs through SheerID, and Education is available only in select regions [98]. For K-12, the school's domain administrator decides how long access lasts [98].

Free classroom tools

The K-12 page pitches FigJam for classroom discussions, brainstorms and group work, with stamps, stickies, widgets, voting and audio notes, and hundreds of classroom templates [47]. A FigJam add-on for Google Classroom lets teachers assign, collect and grade FigJam files inside Classroom, and is available on all plans [117].

Sharing to Google Classroom requires the Student or educator job title in Figma's account settings [117].

Education status follows your email

Education status is tied to the school email address you verify with; changing the email on your Figma account afterwards revokes it [98]. Figma asks people who already have a personal account to switch it to their school email before applying [98].

Moving from Education to a paid plan has its own rule: free Education members and paid members cannot share one Professional team, and returning to Education means downgrading to Starter first [97].

Who does not qualify

Figma does not give free Education teams to early-stage startups, nonprofits, self-directed learners, or educational programs run by organizations whose main purpose is not education [3]. Non-teaching school staff do not qualify [98].

The pricing FAQ is direct about nonprofits: Figma has no nonprofit discount, and anyone is welcome to use the free plan [3].

Is there a free trial?

We found no free trial of the paid plans on Figma's pricing, plan or help pages; Starter is the free way in [2]. When a paid plan is bought, Figma charges the card and updates the account immediately [137].

Payments are non-refundable [3], so test what you can on Starter before upgrading. Test first.

What free costs when you outgrow it

The fourth shared file is usually the trigger. Moving to Professional costs US$16 per Full seat a month billed annually, US$192 a year, or US$20 monthly [2]. A designer working with a developer and a reviewer can keep costs down with a Dev seat at US$12 and a Collab seat at US$3, annually [2].

Prices on Figma's site exclude sales tax and VAT [141].

The cheapest paid step

If Starter is almost enough, the smallest upgrade is one Professional Full seat for whoever edits, with everyone else on free View seats: US$192 a year by our arithmetic [2]. A Collab seat at US$3 a month annually adds someone who only needs FigJam and Slides [2].

That small team gains unlimited files, team libraries, unlimited version history, password protection and Dev Mode on the Full seat [128].

Going back to free

Professional can be canceled at any time and drops to Starter at the end of the billing period [137]. Before that, move files into one folder within Starter's limits, remove extra folders, and download invoices [137].

Published Sites are unpublished on downgrade, and custom domains on Make apps are removed, although the apps stay on their figma.site address [137].

Free alternatives

If Starter's limits are the problem and money is tight, Penpot's hosted Professional plan is free and open source [171]. Sketch has no free plan but offers a 30-day trial and free access for students and educators [172] [195]. For whiteboards, Miro's free plan keeps three editable boards and Mural's three editable murals [175] [182].

Security on the free plan

Starter has no SSO or advanced security settings [129]. Password-protected sharing, prototype-only links and viewer restrictions start on Professional [128].

If you share client prototypes, those settings are worth more than the extra files. Privacy costs money here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Figma free forever?+

Figma's pages give the Starter plan no end date. It allows three Design or Sites files, three FigJam files and three Slides files in one folder, plus unlimited drafts.

Is Figma free for students?+

Yes, for verified students and educators. Higher-education users get the Professional plan with AI; K-12 users get the Enterprise plan through their district without AI tools.

## Verdict

Figma is genuinely free for learning, personal projects, and anyone who only views. It is free with real power for students in higher education. It stops being free the moment a team needs a fourth shared file, Dev Mode, or AI as a daily tool. Use Starter to learn the product, then buy the smallest seat mix that covers who actually edits.
