The short version: local SEO comes in every plan

SE Ranking does not sell local SEO as a separate purchase. Three Plus Local Marketing locations come with Core, Growth and Enterprise [1], and each one brings map rank tracking, listings management in 100+ directories, review management and Google Business Profile tools. Extra locations cost from US$18.40, and Maps rankings update weekly by default. For one shop, Core covers it. This guide explains what a local business or multi-location brand gets, how map tracking and listings work, what extra locations cost, and where SE Ranking's own pages disagree, as of 12 October 2026.

The fit is broad. SE Ranking's local rank tracker page names coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, beauty salons, car shops and the local offices of large companies, and its local SEO guides cover plumbers, dentists and law firms. Any business that serves an area fits. What matters more than the industry is how many locations you run and how messy your listings are today, because those two things decide which locations you need and how much work the first month takes.

Toolkit tip
Fix NAP errors first

Errors in name, address, phone or URL are the cheapest wins. Fix them before chasing new listings.

Locations: what you get and what extra ones cost

What a location is, Lite or Plus

A location is a local business, storefront or service-area business, with an address, name and other attributes. You add it by connecting its Google Business Profile, and SE Ranking says it does not store the data shared through that OAuth connection. Locations come in two kinds. Lite locations track 250 local keywords, monitor about 30 directories and manage profiles on Google, Facebook, Apple and Bing. Plus locations add listings management in 100+ directories, more review sites, Google Business Profile posts and 500 keywords per location. The three included locations are Plus.

Extra locations and keyword limits

Extra locations start at US$18.40 [2]. A ten-branch business needs seven extra, from about US$128.80 a month, and Lite and Plus can be mixed in one account. Use Plus where listings need fixing, Lite where they do not. Keyword limits scale with locations. The base limit is 1,500 local and map keywords, and each extra Plus location adds 500, so ten Plus locations give 5,000. The catch is how they are counted: limits count point-keyword combinations, so five tracking points with five common keywords use 25 [3]. Plan grids with that in mind.

⚠️
Watch out
Grid colors differ by page

The help center and the blog define the grid colors differently. Read the position number, not the color.

Watching where you rank on the map

Tracking points and grids

Local Rankings show how a Google Business Profile ranks in Google Maps at tracking points such as a city, street or address. Common keywords apply to every point, and point-specific keywords to one. The local rank tracker page checks the top 20 Maps results. For wider coverage, the Grid Rank Tracker places a square grid of 3×3 to 15×15 points over your area and checks Maps rankings at each. You can set the gap between points, switch off points over water or outside the city, and use multiple grids to cover a service area.

Reading the grid, and a color mismatch

The two pages that explain the colors disagree. The help center colors grid points green for top 3, yellow for top 5, orange for top 10, red for top 15 and maroon for top 20. SE Ranking's blog describes yellow as 4 to 6 and red as 11 to 15, with dark red for 16 to 19. Read the number, not the color. By default the map shows average positions across all keywords at each point, and a dropdown filters by keyword. Below it, charts cover average position per keyword, ranking distribution and average position per tracking point. Start with the per-point chart.

Update speed and organic local rankings

Maps rankings are checked once a week by default. Location data, listings and reviews update weekly by default too, can be set to weekly or monthly, and can be refreshed manually at any time. Weekly suits most local work. Separately, standard rank tracking follows organic results for a city or postal code, including whether you appear in the Local Pack, once you turn on Local Pack tracking with the business name and phone. That organic local tracking is daily. Use both: the grid tells you where on the map you are visible, the organic tracker tells you how the website does.

Finding who took your spot

Clicking a ranking position opens the live Google Maps results for that keyword and point, with the local competitors in the top 20. Filters isolate ranking jumps or drops over a chosen period. That shows which competitor took a spot, and where on the map it happened. Check it after every drop, before you change anything on your own profile. Our SE Ranking rank tracker guide covers the organic side in more depth.

Fixing your listings

Errors, duplicates and the listing score

The listings section shows which directories list the business, which have errors in name, address, phone or URL, and which are duplicates. A listing score rewards presence in many directories without errors. Fix NAP errors first. They are the cheapest wins. Plus locations then distribute business information across 100+ directories, update existing listings, create missing ones and remove duplicates. Sync statuses include synced, action required, submitted and error. Action required usually means a claim or ownership issue, so resolve it rather than waiting for it to clear.

Sync is not automatic

SE Ranking's own walkthrough says updates do not start on their own when you add a location or change its details [4]. You either enable Auto-sync, which keeps comparing directories against the profile, or press Sync now for a one-time push. Directories then take from one day to a month to show the corrected data. Do not expect next-day results. Before the first sync, fill in the full profile: service area, special and unique hours, category and description, plus a rich data tab with social profile URLs, accepted payment options and attributes that depend on the primary category. Directories copy whatever you push.

Directory reach and its limits

The blog splits directories into two groups: up to 35 monitored directories per country, checked for presence and errors, and a larger set of extended-reach directories that receive data without being monitored. The total passes 100 across supported countries, but coverage varies by country, so check the list for yours before buying extra locations. The tool creates missing listings in most directories, except Google and its subsidiaries, such as Google Maps, Waze and Google Assistant, and Facebook. Those profiles have to exist and be claimed first, which is why connecting the Google Business Profile is the first step. Do it on day one.

You can also exclude a directory from checks, but it then stops counting toward listings, errors and the listing score. The help center warns against excluding directories just to tidy the table. Exclude only directories that truly do not apply. A score raised by hiding directories looks good in a report and fixes nothing for the customer searching for your phone number.

⚠️
Watch out
Excluding directories changes the score

An excluded directory stops counting toward listings, errors and the listing score. Exclude only directories that truly do not apply.

Reviews in one inbox

Sources, replies and analytics

Reviews are collected from sources including Google, Facebook, Yelp, Foursquare and Tripadvisor, and Plus expands review sites to include Trustpilot and Meinestadt. SE Ranking's walkthrough puts the total at over 30 sources. Most of those are monitor-only, though. You can reply to Google and Facebook reviews from inside SE Ranking; other sites require opening the directory. New reviews are checked on a recurring cycle, and older edits appear on the next full resync. Coverage is wide. Replying still happens mostly elsewhere.

Review analytics show average rating, total reviews and distribution by source and rating over 7 days to 12 months, and the Local Marketing tool adds AI-based semantic insights from review text. Filters cover rating, source, status, language and date. Recurring complaints in reviews are product feedback. Act on them, and reply within a day, because customers read the replies as much as the reviews.

Getting more reviews, and answering bad ones

SE Ranking's reviews guide suggests asking in person, in follow-up messages, on receipts and in post-purchase surveys, and adding review widgets or a dedicated review page, with a smooth process on mobile. Its suggestion of rewards and contests needs care, so check each review site's own rules before offering anything. The same guide recommends prompt replies to positive and negative reviews, with empathy, an apology and a solution for complaints. Inside SE Ranking that works directly for Google and Facebook; elsewhere you open the directory itself. Keep the tone the same everywhere.

💡
Toolkit tip
Report profile searches over months

Profile searches only populate for 3, 6 or 12-month periods. A one-month report shows zero.

Google Business Profile: data, edits and posts

What the profile data shows

The profile section shows direct, discovery and branded searches, Maps versus Search views, website visits, direction requests, calls and photo views. Calls can be viewed by day and hour, which tells a shop when to have someone at the phone. There is a trap in the dates, though. Searches and searches by keywords only populate for 3, 6 or 12-month periods; 7 days or a month show zero, and the current month is excluded. Reports shorter than three months return no data for those blocks. Choose longer periods for profile reports.

Editing and posting

Profile details such as name, category, hours, contact data and description can be edited in SE Ranking and synced to Google Business Profile. The help center advises against changing profile data often, so one person should own edits. Plus locations also include a post scheduler for Google Business Profile, with post type, media and start and end dates, and you can see earlier posts and their status. The Local Marketing product page still labels the scheduler "Coming soon". Test it in the trial. SE Ranking's video library also shows a workflow that drafts posts with Planable, sold separately from US$33 a month. For a single shop, writing posts by hand is fine.

Audits, scores and the monthly report

The Local Marketing audit checks Google Business Profile, listings and reviews, and grades issues as errors, warnings and notices. It runs weekly with location updates, can be run manually without a daily limit, and keeps full detail for 90 days. Each location also gets a score based on profile completeness, presence and accuracy in directories, and how you handle reviews. Replying to positive, neutral and negative reviews raises it. Use the score as a monthly to-do list.

Reporting ties it together. The reporting feature combines national and local SEO data in one report, so a business owner sees organic rankings, map positions and reviews together instead of three separate exports. For an owner who reads one email a month, that is the format that gets read. Send it monthly, next to the location score, which already lists what to fix next.

Two setups priced out: a plumber and a chain

A plumber in one metro area uses one included location and a 9×9 grid on five keywords, which is 405 local limits, plus 100 organic keywords tracked on mobile in three suburbs. Core covers all of it at US$129 a month. A chain with ten branches uses three included and seven extra Plus locations, from about US$128.80 a month on top of the plan, and gets 5,000 local keywords. On annual Core, that is at least US$2,784 a year. Compare that with a local-only tool before buying. For the full plan math, see our SE Ranking pricing guide.

Chains need one more decision. Franchises can mix Lite and Plus locations and adjust counts as needed, but locations are visible only to the user who adds them. Decide in advance who manages each branch. Otherwise nobody sees the full picture. Agencies serving local clients get local rankings, GBP posts, listings and reviews management, and can share results through a local guest link, one per location. Our guide for agencies covers the rest. For technical teams, a Local Marketing API returns locations, rankings, audits, profile metrics, listings and reviews, and in MCP the Local Marketing tools do not use Data API credits.

What Google rewards locally, per SE Ranking's guides

SE Ranking's local SEO guide reduces Google's local ranking to three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. It adds review sentiment and quantity, star ratings, site health, local content and site speed as further influences. SE Ranking's tools touch most of these. Distance is the one no tool changes. The Local Pack lists three businesses with name, address, phone, ratings, hours and photos, plus buttons to call, visit the site or get directions; hotel packs show prices and availability instead of website links. It sits above the blue links.

The guide's profile checklist covers name, address and phone, category and subcategories, website URL, description, hours, products or services, and photos and videos. The location score rewards the same completeness, so one checklist serves both Google and the score. The reviews guide cites 99.75% of consumers reading local reviews at least sometimes and 79% influenced by them when choosing a local business. These figures are quoted on a vendor blog, so treat them as directional. The guides do disclose more than most: the reviews guide was first drafted with SE Ranking's AI Writer, then revised and fact-checked by human editors.

How it compares for local

Semrush sells its Local toolkit per location: $30 a month for Base and $60 for Pro, billed annually, with listing management in 70+ directories on Pro. It can be added to a Semrush plan or bought separately. Ahrefs lists a GBP Monitor for managing Google Business Profiles at scale. SE Ranking includes three Plus locations in every plan, which is rare. The gap shows at ten locations. Ten Semrush Local Pro locations cost $600 a month billed annually. On SE Ranking, annual Core at US$103.20 plus seven extra Plus locations from US$18.40 comes to about US$232 a month, with the full SEO suite included. Semrush Local covers local work only. Price your own mix before committing.

Four mistakes skew local reports more than any pricing choice. Expecting daily map rankings, when they are weekly. Excluding directories to raise the score. Choosing a one-month period for profile searches. Letting several people edit the same profile. Each one leads to a misleading report, and each is avoided by a setting you choose once. None of them costs money to fix, only attention during the first week of setup.
