Before you sign with Zendesk, check five things: how many paid seats you will really carry, whether email-only ticketing is enough or you need the Suite, which Suite Professional gates your workflows hit, how the AI meter behaves at its limit, and the date your renewal notice is due. Zendesk's pricing page lists Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month billed annually, or $149 billed monthly.[1] Billing is per agent, and every agent seat is paid; the full plan-by-plan cost is in our Zendesk pricing guide. Our verdict is simple. Zendesk rewards buyers who check these items before the first invoice, and it punishes the ones who check them at renewal.
Count the seats you will actually pay for
Zendesk sells named seats, and the seat count is the biggest line on the bill. Every agent, every admin, the account owner and suspended agents take a paid seat. Light agents and contributors take no paid seat, unless they hold an Agent, Admin or Editor role in another Zendesk product; Suite Professional includes up to 100 light agents (Suite Enterprise up to 1,000), while Support Team and Suite Team get them only through an add-on. On the Suite, one extra seat adds a seat in every Suite product, so you cannot buy voice for three people and ticketing for ten. Adding seats is instant and prorated. Removing them is not. Walk the org chart with these checks before you pick a seat count:
- Who replies to customers? Each of them needs a full agent seat.
- Who only reads or comments? Managers, engineers and approvers can be light agents on Suite Professional, which includes up to 100. Support plans and Suite Team include none; they are an add-on there.
- Who has left? A suspended agent still holds a seat until you downgrade the role.
- Which integrations log in as a user? The Jira integration's dedicated integration user takes a paid seat.
- Who holds roles in other products? A light agent with Knowledge admin permission needs a Support seat.
By our arithmetic, five Support Team agents billed annually come to $95 a month, or $1,140 a year, and ten Suite Professional agents billed annually come to $13,800 a year. Seats also set your storage: Suite Professional gives 10 GB of data plus 100 MB per agent, and going over adds fees rather than slowing the account.
A suspended agent still holds a paid seat. Downgrade the role to free the seat, and send the seat reduction with your 30-day renewal notice.
Match the plan to your channels, not to the price
The cheapest plan is narrower than it looks. Zendesk's pricing page lists Support Team at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, and Suite Team at $55 billed annually or $69 billed monthly. Support Team is email ticketing: multiple support addresses, triggers, automations, macros, views, ticket routing, prebuilt dashboards and public social channels such as Facebook and X. It has no messaging or live chat, no help center and no voice. If customers expect a chat bubble, a phone line or a self-service knowledge base, Support Team is the wrong starting point.
Suite Team is the first plan with messaging and live chat (Web Widget, mobile SDKs, WhatsApp with five numbers included), telephony with voicemail, one help center in one language, omnichannel routing and Action Builder. Check the channel fees as well as the seat price. A US voice number is $1 a month and inbound calls are $0.016 a minute. Since 1 Oct 2026 Meta charges per message for non-template replies and utility templates sent inside WhatsApp's 24-hour service window, separate from Zendesk's fees. Inbound customer messages are unchanged.
- List every channel customers use today, and the ones you plan to add this year.
- If you need any of chat, voice or a help center, start the comparison at Suite Team.
- Estimate call minutes and WhatsApp replies; both bill on top of seats.
Check the gates between Suite Team and Suite Professional
The price gap between the two Suite plans buys workflow features, not more channels. Suite Team already has messaging, voice and a help center; Suite Professional adds the controls a team needs once it promises response times or serves several markets. Read this grid against your own workflows before you assume Suite Team is enough, because moving up later means paying the higher rate for every seat.
| Feature | Suite Team | Suite Professional |
|---|---|---|
| SLA policies | No | Yes |
| Skills-based routing and custom queues | No | Yes |
| Multiple ticket forms, conditional fields | No | Yes |
| Customer portal ticket management, community | No | Yes |
| Help centers | 1, one language | Up to 5, 40+ languages |
| Light agents | Add-on | Up to 100 |
| Reporting | Explore Lite, daily refresh | Custom reports, hourly refresh |
| Admin Copilot | No | Included |
| API requests per minute | 200 | 400 |
If you promise first-reply times, route by language or product skill, or serve customers in several languages, you need Suite Professional. The gap matters over a year. By our arithmetic, one agent costs $660 a year on Suite Team and $1,380 on Suite Professional billed annually, against $828 and $1,788 billed monthly for twelve months. Audit logs, custom agent roles, sandboxes and group SLAs sit higher still, on Suite Enterprise, which is quote-only through Zendesk Sales.
The free trial is the place to test these gates. It runs 14 days with no card, most trials start on Suite Professional, and it admits up to 5 people including you. Trial data and configuration are lost when it ends unless you buy or export, so decide before day 14 whether the setup is worth keeping. Eligible trials can be extended once by another 14 days, a request the account owner makes in the admin dashboard.
Set the AI meter before it sets your bill
AI agents come with every plan, but they run on a separate meter. Each automated resolution, a request the AI agent resolves without a human, draws on an allowance of 5 per agent per month on Support Team and Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, up to 10,000 a year. Extra resolutions cost $1.50 each when bought ahead (committed), or $2.00 each pay-as-you-go. Included resolutions do not roll over. An assisted escalation, where a human finishes the job, does not count against the allowance.
At the limit an admin chooses one of two settings. Allow overage keeps the AI agents answering and bills each extra resolution. Pause stops them and routes requests to live agents, with settings kept. Pick one on day one. The arithmetic is easy to run: ten Suite Professional agents include 100 resolutions a month, so 300 resolutions in a month means 200 extra, or $400 pay-as-you-go against $300 committed, by our arithmetic. Committed resolutions are 25% cheaper each, so commit only the volume you are confident you will use, and start on pay-as-you-go for a measured month before you buy ahead.
- Watch usage against the allowance in Admin Center and pick overage or pause before launch.
- Test in Admin Center, the test widget or a sandbox; those tests consume nothing, while testing in production can.
- Model resolutions per month from current ticket volume, then measure in the first weeks.
Decide on day one whether AI agents keep answering past the allowance at $2.00 per extra resolution or pause and hand off to live agents.
Copilot is a different purchase. It costs $50 per agent per month, paid yearly, on Suite Professional and higher, and Zendesk sells it for all agent seats, never for chosen agents.[2] For ten agents that adds $6,000 a year, or $165 per agent per month for the pair, by our arithmetic. Before buying it, try what Suite Professional already includes: Admin Copilot, which does not draw on the pooled allowance, plus writing tools, ticket summaries, merge suggestions and similar tickets at 5 uses per agent a month, pooled, capped at 500 per account a month. At the cap those four features pause until the next cycle, with no overage charge.
Clear security, data and integration checks
IT and legal reviewers will ask about these points, and some carry hard dates. The biggest is authentication. From 27 Oct 2026 no account can create new API tokens, and all Support API tokens stop working permanently on 30 Apr 2027, with no opt-out.[3] Every integration you build or inherit must use OAuth, and webhooks that call back into your own Zendesk with a token will break. Our Zendesk API guide covers the migration.
- Data residency: the Data Center Location add-on hosts data in the US, EEA, UK or APAC. It is free on Suite Professional and above but not switched on automatically; you must request it. Without it, Zendesk may move account data between regions without notice, and Marketplace apps sit outside its scope.
- Health data: you may store it only under a Business Associate Agreement, with the account configured for HIPAA.
- AI and your data: the AI Services Addendum says you own inputs and outputs, and third-party LLM providers may use Service Data only to provide and secure the AI services. The Customer Agreement still lets Zendesk use Service Data to improve its products, and the trust center describes generic cross-account models trained on aggregated, sanitized data. Opt-outs exist; ask for them in writing if they matter.
- Certifications: ISO 27001:2022, FedRAMP Low and SOC 2 Type II, the last one on request under NDA.
The Data Center Location add-on is free on Suite Professional and above, but you must request it; until then Zendesk may move account data between regions.
Read the contract terms before the first invoice
The Customer Agreement is where most regret starts. The subscription term renews automatically for an equivalent term at then-current rates unless either side gives at least 30 days' written notice, sent to revops@zendesk.com.[4] On self-service accounts, cancelling in Admin Center counts as that notice. Put a reminder 45 to 60 days before the term ends. Charges are non-refundable, and there are no credits for unused seats or time. You also cannot downgrade or cut seats during a term; those changes become pending until the next billing cycle, while you keep paying today's rate. Zendesk also sells month-to-month subscriptions, at $25, $69 and $149 per agent per month for Support Team, Suite Team and Suite Professional, and on a self-service account monthly billing is the way to keep seat cuts to a one-month horizon; sales-assisted and managed accounts change seats through Zendesk sales.
Billing cycle choices lock in, too. Moving from annual to monthly needs approval and starts at the next cycle, so one month into an annual term means an eleven-month wait. Only the account owner can cancel, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle. Plan the exit before you need it. Export your data during the term or within 30 days after it ends, because permanent deletion starts 90 days after cancellation and cannot be reversed.
Finally, check support coverage against your hours. Standard Support on Suite plans is web and phone, 8-to-5 in local business hours, five days a week. Round-the-clock help needs a paid Premier plan. Zendesk publishes a status page but no uptime SLA for the core service; the only published SLA covers Talk usage on the Enterprise plan.

How can I pay for Zendesk?+
By credit or debit card, PayPal, bank direct debit (ACH for eligible US accounts), or wire transfer and checks on managed accounts, in USD, EUR, GBP or BRL. Prices exclude taxes.
How many apps are on the Zendesk Marketplace?+
Our count of the Marketplace API on 2 Nov 2026 found 1,823 published listings, 506 of them paid and 55 built by Zendesk.
The bottom line
Zendesk is a capable help desk with a strict contract, and the checks above decide whether it fits your budget. Count real seats, including suspended staff and integration users. Choose Support Team only for email-only ticketing, and expect SLAs, skills routing and multilingual help to need Suite Professional. Set the AI meter to overage or pause before launch, price Copilot for every seat, move integrations to OAuth before 30 Apr 2027, and diary the renewal notice well ahead.
