Zendesk works well for a Shopify store, and the integration itself costs nothing. Its Shopify app, built by Zendesk and installed 16,495 times on the Marketplace, puts order details inside each ticket and lets agents refund or cancel a Shopify order without leaving Zendesk.[1] The catch sits in the plan. Support Team, the cheapest plan, is email ticketing only, so storefront chat starts on Suite Team, which Zendesk lists at $55 per agent per month billed annually. The order-refund report and AI-assisted order actions sit one plan higher. For most stores, Suite Team is the right start.

What the free Shopify app puts inside a ticket

Setup needs administrator permissions in both Shopify and Zendesk. Once the store is connected, agents see order information, fulfillment status and the customer's interaction timeline in the ticket sidebar, and they can cancel orders or issue order refunds from that same panel. One Zendesk account can connect several storefronts, which matters for brands that run separate stores by region or product line. The sidebar app works on every current plan, Support Team included, so even an email-only team gets order context next to each request.

A few details trip up first setups. The connection leaves legacy Shopify order ID fields on your ticket forms; Zendesk says agents can ignore them. Disconnecting a storefront removes the sidebar apps, the Web Widget on the store and the Zendesk app in Shopify at once. Treat it as a full uninstall. The old Zendesk Chat for Shopify app is no longer in Shopify's app store, because Zendesk Chat is being retired, so a store connecting today gets messaging instead.

Zendesk can also pull Shopify profiles and events into Sunshine, which shows a Shopify customer timeline in the ticket whenever the requester's email matches the Shopify customer email. Two limits apply. Events can take up to 24 hours to show, and they start from the day you activate the feature, with no backfill of earlier orders. Turning events off later hides every existing entry as well, so switching the feature off to test something wipes the history your agents were reading.

💡
Toolkit tip
Turn on Shopify events early

Shopify events in Sunshine start on the day you activate them and never backfill, so switch them on before peak season. Check that requester emails match Shopify customer emails.

Putting chat on the storefront, and the other places shoppers write

The integration can add the Web Widget to each connected store automatically, with messaging on by default; if messaging is disabled, the older Web Widget (Classic) is installed instead. Only the default brand's widget goes in automatically. A second brand's widget needs its code pasted into the Shopify theme by hand. Messaging is not part of Support Team at all: the chat widget, WhatsApp and private social messaging start on Suite Team. Our Zendesk Web Widget guide walks through the setup screens.

Shoppers rarely stay on one channel. Suite plans include five WhatsApp numbers, and Instagram Direct and Facebook Messenger arrive as private messaging channels in the same Agent Workspace as email and chat. WhatsApp carries its own cost line. From 1 Oct 2026, Meta charges per message for non-template replies and utility templates sent inside the 24-hour customer service window, separate from Zendesk's fees. Inbound customer messages stay unchanged. A store answering order questions over WhatsApp is sending exactly the replies that now carry a fee.

Zendesk has no in-product TikTok channel, so TikTok and Klaviyo come in through Marketplace apps. The TikTok Shop app, built by TikTok Shop, is free, needs a TikTok Shop seller account and keeps all of a buyer's conversations in one ticket. The Klaviyo app, built by Klaviyo and also free, shows WhatsApp consent expiration and lets agents send request-to-continue follow-ups. Both are third-party builds with far smaller footprints than the Shopify app: 568 and 740 installs on the Marketplace.

⚠️
Watch out
Disconnecting removes the widget

Disconnecting a storefront also removes the Web Widget from the store, the sidebar apps and the Zendesk app in Shopify, so plan any reconnection before you do it.

Which plan a Shopify team actually needs

Zendesk's pricing page lists Support Team at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, Suite Team at $55 or $69, and Suite Professional at $115 or $149.[2] Every agent, admin and suspended agent takes a paid seat, so the bill follows headcount; our Zendesk pricing guide covers the seat rules. Suite Enterprise is quote-only. For a store, the plan choice comes down to three features: storefront chat, the order-refund report and AI that acts on orders.

Plan Price per agent per month What a store team gets
Support Team $19 billed annually, $25 monthly Sidebar order app, email ticketing, public social only; no chat widget
Suite Team $55 billed annually, $69 monthly Adds Web Widget messaging, WhatsApp, Instagram Direct, one help center, Explore Lite
Suite Professional $115 billed annually, $149 monthly Adds Explore Professional, SLAs, skills routing, up to 100 light agents, Copilot eligibility
Suite Enterprise Talk to Sales Adds custom agent roles, audit logs, sandboxes

The billing cycle matters more for stores than for most teams, because headcount swings with the season. Adding agents takes effect at once with prorated charges, but removing seats or downgrading waits for the next billing cycle, and an annual term allows no reduction until it ends. By our arithmetic, a seat billed monthly beats a year billed annually only if you keep it nine months or fewer. For the $69 monthly seat, nine months cost $621 against $660 for the year, and ten months cost $690.

The same ten-month line holds on all three listed plans. A store whose team stays the same size for ten months or more saves with annual billing. A store that hires for the holiday peak and shrinks afterward should stay on monthly billing: seats added during an annual term are charged for the rest of that term and cannot be removed until it ends. Light agents help as well: they do not take a paid seat, and Suite Professional includes up to 100 of them, while Suite Team offers them only as an add-on.

Letting AI answer order questions, and what it costs

AI agents come with every plan, billed per automated resolution: a request an AI agent resolves without handing it to a human. Zendesk's pricing page includes 5 per agent per month on Support Team and Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, then charges $1.50 each committed in advance or $2.00 each pay-as-you-go. Included resolutions do not roll over. At the limit, admins either allow overage or pause the AI agents, which sends requests to live agents. Zendesk's specialized-agents page lists ecommerce agents and workflows such as order tracking, returns and address changes.

Order-status questions are where the meter runs. Ten agents on Suite Professional include 100 automated resolutions a month. By our arithmetic, a month with 300 AI-resolved conversations leaves 200 extra, which cost $400 pay-as-you-go or $300 committed. Zendesk's customer story says NOBULL reports a 50% AI resolution rate in chat and 30% across all channels, and another says Motel Rocks saw a 50% drop in ticket volume after deploying AI agents. Your rate will differ. Measure it in a two-week pilot before choosing a committed pack.

💡
Toolkit tip
Choose overage or pause first

Decide before peak season whether AI agents keep running on pay-as-you-go overage or pause and hand requests to live agents when the included resolutions run out.

The Shopify actions inside an agent's reply are a separate product. Auto assist, part of Copilot, can suggest and partly automate Shopify order lookups, cancellations and order refunds, the only Shopify actions it suggests today.[3] Copilot costs $50 per agent per month, paid yearly, on Suite Professional and higher, and it is bought for every agent seat, never for a chosen few. By our arithmetic, Copilot on ten seats adds $6,000 a year to a $13,800 base. Weigh it against how much of the queue needs agents to look up, cancel or refund orders; for questions customers can settle alone, AI agents carry more of the load. Our Zendesk AI playbook separates the two.

Reporting on refunded and cancelled orders

The Shopify integration tags tickets shopify_refunded for refunded orders and shopify_cancelled for cancelled ones, and Explore reports can count both.[4] Zendesk's recipe for that report needs Explore Professional or Enterprise plus Editor or Admin permissions, and it takes about 15 minutes at an intermediate skill level. Explore Professional starts on Suite Professional. Support Team and Suite Team get Explore Lite, with prebuilt dashboards refreshed daily, so those stores collect the tags but cannot build the custom report.

The tags work best alongside structured ticket fields. Zendesk's trial setup wizard can add an Order number field (numbers only), a Product SKU/ID field and an Inquiry type drop-down with Billing, Returns and Exchanges, which separates return requests from billing questions in views and reports. Explore caps each report and each export at 50,000 rows, and reports time out after 2 minutes. A busy store reporting a full year should filter by month rather than pull everything at once.

Per-agent pricing next to ticket-volume tools

Zendesk charges by agent, so the bill tracks headcount rather than order volume. Gorgias, the e-commerce help desk in our catalog, bills the whole account by billable tickets a month instead: Basic is $50 a month billed annually for 300 tickets and Pro is $300 a month billed annually for 2,000 tickets, as our Gorgias vs Zendesk comparison shows. Which model costs less depends on tickets per agent. By our arithmetic, five agents at $55 per agent per month billed annually cost $275 a month whether they handle 500 tickets or 5,000. The seat price stays flat, but AI resolutions beyond the allowance and channel fees such as WhatsApp still rise with volume. A small team clearing a heavy queue gains from per-agent pricing; a large team with a light queue loses. Count your tickets first, then compare quotes at that volume.

The 14-day trial needs no card, usually starts on Suite Professional and admits up to five people including you. Marketplace apps can be installed during the trial, so you can connect a real store and check the sidebar against real orders. Trial data and configuration are lost at the end unless you buy or export. Annual terms renew automatically at then-current rates unless notice arrives 30 days before the term ends, and Zendesk gives no subscription refunds, as the pricing guide explains.

Frequently asked questions

Does Zendesk have a free plan for small Shopify stores?+

No. Zendesk has no free plan; the options are a 14-day trial without a card, and for eligible early-stage startups a six-month Suite program for up to 50 agents, longer only through Zendesk's partner VCs and accelerators.

Do test conversations with the AI agent use up automated resolutions?+

Testing in Admin Center, the test widget, the conversation simulator and sandboxes does not consume resolutions. Testing on your live storefront can.

Will custom scripts that connect my store to Zendesk keep working?+

Only if they use OAuth. All Zendesk Support API tokens stop working permanently on 30 Apr 2027, and accounts created on or after 28 Jul 2026 cannot use API tokens at all.

The bottom line

Zendesk gives a Shopify store a free, Zendesk-built app that handles order lookups, cancellations and order refunds from the ticket on every plan, but the plan decides everything around it. Support Team suits an email-only shop. Suite Team is the first plan with storefront chat, WhatsApp and Instagram. Suite Professional adds the refund report and Copilot eligibility. Size seats to your off-season team, pick billing by how long each seat lasts, and model AI resolutions against your order-status volume before peak season.
