What CapCut is, and our short verdict
CapCut is a video editor that runs as a phone app, a Windows and macOS desktop app and a web editor called CapCut Online, with templates, auto captions, text to speech and an AI generation layer on top. CapCut says it has over 660 million users across 170+ markets. The free plan is a real editor. Our verdict: CapCut is a strong free pick for short-form social video, and Pro earns its fee once you need 4K exports on Desktop, premium assets or a monthly pool of AI credits. Skip it if you hand project files to other editors.
CapCut's US pricing page lists Free at $0, Pro at $19.99 a month billed monthly per account, Ultra at $79 a month billed monthly per account and Teams at $12.49 per seat a month billed monthly for the default two seats [1]. The page calls those figures reference only, and the final price, taxes and offers appear after sign-in and can differ by region, device and account, as our CapCut pricing guide explains. The best fit is a solo creator or small marketing team that publishes short vertical video every week.
Plans, listed prices and what Free really covers
Prices shown are what CapCut lists for visitors in the United States, in US dollars. Your price can differ by country, currency and local taxes such as VAT.
| Plan | Listed on the US page | Monthly AI credits | Cloud storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | A few free uses on some AI tools | 0 GB for new spaces since Mar 2026 |
| Pro | $19.99 a month billed monthly per account | 1,200 | 1 TB |
| Ultra | $79 a month billed monthly per account | 8,645 | 1 TB |
| Teams | $12.49 per seat a month billed monthly, default 2 seats | 1,200 per seat | 1 TB shared team space |
CapCut's US pricing page lists Pro at $19.99 a month billed monthly, Ultra at $79 a month billed monthly and Teams at $12.49 per seat a month billed monthly, so by our arithmetic twelve monthly payments come to $239.88 a year billed monthly on Pro and $948 a year billed monthly on Ultra, and Teams at its two-seat default runs $24.98 a month billed monthly for 2 seats. Those figures sit under a tab advertising up to 40% off, so check the current breakdown before you budget. CapCut's US pricing page also has a Yearly tab, but like the monthly figures it is labelled reference-only and CapCut runs time-limited yearly offers, so we don't quote a yearly price; check the Yearly tab after you sign in.
Ultra costs about four times Pro for about 7.2 times the monthly credits, and CapCut does not itemize its extra AI features. Teams sits between them: it needs at least two seats, and its 1,200 credits per seat are pooled at team level, so 2,400 at the default. Pro changed in spring 2026: the old plan carried 550 credits and 100 GB, the current one 1,200 credits and 1 TB, and existing subscribers were upgraded automatically at their old price for the active period. There is no lifetime purchase. You can't switch plans mid-subscription either; you cancel, let the term end and resubscribe at the current price.
When a free export gets a watermark
A project built from free assets in the standard editor exports without a watermark [2]. Templates add a CapCut ending clip, sometimes with a logo layer, which you can delete from the end of the timeline. The real trap is any Pro-marked asset. A premium effect, filter, transition, sticker or template blocks the export or watermarks it until you subscribe or remove it, and you may need to reselect the cover too. On mobile, exports longer than 15 minutes trigger the Pro prompt, a limit that varies by region.
Resolution is the second gate. CapCut lists 4K and 60 fps export among Pro features, CapCut Desktop locks 4K, 60 fps and No Watermark for non-Pro users, and free 4K exports on CapCut Web may carry a watermark or bitrate limits. Some AI tools give free users a handful of uses, about 10 on some and 2 to 3 on others per help. Auto captions are free to start on CapCut Web, though some caption features may need Pro. New cloud spaces get 0 GB since 25 March 2026.
Any Pro-marked effect, filter, sticker or template locks or watermarks a free export; swap it for a free asset and delete the template ending clip.
One account, three apps, different features
Your subscription follows the account, not the device. Pro bought on any platform works on Mobile, Desktop and Web, and one account runs on up to five devices at once. The catch is the login method. CapCut treats Google, email, TikTok, Facebook, Apple ID and US phone-number sign-ins as separate accounts, even with the same email address, and help lists that next to region blocks, outdated apps and sync delays as causes of paid-but-no-Pro complaints. Pick one login before you pay. The three apps also differ in ways that decide where a team should work:
- Mobile only: Teleprompter, TikTok account linking and direct posting, paid creator templates and Auto Lyrics. Templates are published from the mobile app.
- Desktop only: Lip Sync. Desktop's Pro Join button opens CapCut Web to take payment.
- Web and Desktop, not Mobile: AI image generation and AI Design (none in the mobile app as of December 2025, per help) and subtitle-file import; credit history and credit purchases live on CapCut Web.
- Mobile and Desktop, not Web: Auto Cut, still rolling out by region.
CapCut Online is built for Chrome, Edge and Safari, and Firefox may lack full feature parity. It wants at least 5 Mbps (10 Mbps for template exports) and renders exports in the cloud. CapCut for iPad is a Beta that is not in the US App Store before its launch, so help points iPad users to CapCut Online or the iPhone app. Project exchange is the hard wall. CapCut can't import Premiere Pro projects or other third-party project files, so you hand off rendered video only.
CapCut treats Google, email, TikTok and other sign-ins as separate accounts, so subscribe on the one you will always use.
The AI layer runs on credits, not on the plan
CapCut's September 2026 newsroom describes a workflow from AI Lab for ideas through Infinite Canvas and Director Mode for story and shots to the multi-track editor, where Edit Pilot acts as an AI editing partner. Generation runs on models CapCut lists, including its own Dreamina Seedance 2.0, 2.0 Mini and 2.5 for video and Dola Seedream 5.0 for images, plus third-party models such as Veo 3.1 and Sora 2. CapCut says it offers over 85 AI tools. Seedance 2.5 appears only on the paid cards of the US page, and CapCut's launch post rolled it out to subscriber accounts of users over 16. It isn't free.
Credits are the meter. Subscription credits arrive each cycle, expire at the end of their grant period and never roll over; they vanish when the plan ends, though after cancelling they stay usable to the end of the paid cycle. Credits can't pay for Pro, Teams or storage, and CapCut asks you to subscribe before buying them. Every AI output carries visible AI labels, invisible watermarks and C2PA Content Credentials, which matters if a client expects unlabeled footage.
Commercial use, refunds and your data
Templates and materials expressly labeled Commercial Use may be used for commercial purposes such as brand promotion [3], and text panels have a filter that hides everything else. Licensed music can be removed or muted later, even inside saved projects, and audio added on CapCut Web isn't from TikTok's licensed library, so TikTok can mute it. Export finished client work promptly, because CapCut can retire effects, templates and music for everyone.
Refunds are rare. CapCut treats subscriptions as virtual goods that generally aren't refunded, with an appeal only in special cases such as accidental double-billing [4]. Apple purchases go through Report a Problem, Google Play through the Play app, and Web or PC orders through CapCut support or the payment gateway. Cancel where you bought, at least 24 hours before renewal, and access runs to the end of the cycle. The 2020 Terms text contains no subscription, renewal, trial or cancellation clauses at all.
Who you contract with takes two documents. The CapCut US Privacy Policy, last updated 15 April 2026, says services for US users are operated by TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, while the Terms as served, last updated 9 June 2020, name Bytedance Pte. Ltd. as the contracting company. Under the Terms' US supplement you grant CapCut a nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, transferable, sublicensable license to your content, while CapCut's legal page says the content itself stays yours. The Privacy Policy lists training machine-learning models among the uses of user information, with no opt-out listed. US disputes go to binding arbitration, with an email opt-out within 30 days of first use.
Templates and materials labeled Commercial Use may be used commercially, and CapCut can remove or mute licensed music later, even in saved projects.
How we score CapCut, and where rivals fit better
We score CapCut on eight axes, each on its own evidence, weighted by what drives a video-editing purchase for a small team. Reach across three apps and a free tier that exports clean video pull the composite up. Reference-only pricing, platform gaps and expiring credits pull it down. The result is 3.7/5, and the breakdown below gives the reasoning for every axis.
TikTok account linking, direct posting and TikTok templates in the mobile app, Google Drive and Dropbox imports, YouTube export, export to the Shopify backend, an Epidemic Sound offer for new users, and the CapCut x Codex plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app on PC that turns prompts and raw footage into editable drafts. Held back by TikTok linking and posting on mobile only (one TikTok account at a time), no project import or export with third-party editors such as Premiere Pro (rendered video only), no importing one CapCut project into another, a Codex plugin whose availability varies by version, account and region.
One editor across CapCut Mobile, Desktop (Windows and macOS) and CapCut Online, with a multi-track timeline, a large template gallery, auto captions in 20+ languages with SRT or TXT export, text to speech, keyframes, background removal, Auto Cut, Lip Sync, Desktop exports up to 4K at 60 fps (Pro), Teams with shared space and real-time co-editing, and one account on up to 5 devices. Held back by features split by surface (Teleprompter and TikTok posting on mobile only, no Auto Cut on the web, no AI image generation on mobile), caption recognition that times out past about 15 minutes, web 2K/4K only for projects created at that resolution, an iPad app still in Beta and not in the US App Store, and effects, templates and licensed music that CapCut can remove without notice, even from saved projects.
A Free plan that exports without a watermark when no Pro assets or template ending clip are used, and per-account paid plans: CapCut's US pricing page lists Pro at $19.99 a month billed monthly (1,200 monthly AI credits, all premium templates, 1 TB of space storage), Ultra at $79 a month billed monthly (8,645 monthly AI credits) and Teams at $12.49 per seat a month billed monthly per seat for the default 2 seats, with Pro working on Mobile, Desktop and Web. Held back by prices the page calls 'for reference only' (final price after sign-in, varying by region, device and account, with promotions tested on selected users), no regular yearly price shown, subscription credits that never roll over and vanish when the plan ends, credit packs from $4.99 for 100 in CapCut's help, unpublished storage add-on prices, Ultra's 'exclusive AI features' not itemised, and no refunds as a rule.
Templates that turn clips into a finished edit, a mobile app for iOS and Android, a browser editor that needs no install (Chrome, Edge or Safari, also on Chromebook), QR-code login from the phone, one subscription that follows the account across surfaces, and AI costs shown before you confirm. Held back by each login method (Google, email, TikTok, Facebook, Apple ID, phone) creating a separate account, a common reason a paid Pro does not show up, possible gaps on Firefox (built for Chrome, Edge and Safari), payments split by platform (store-only on mobile, Pro on Desktop redirects to the web), no plan switching mid-subscription (cancel, let it end, resubscribe), a credit breakdown visible only on CapCut Web, and a web editor that needs at least 5 Mbps (10 Mbps for template exports).
AI Lab, Infinite Canvas and Director Mode for story and shots, Edit Pilot in the editor, Video Studio, Design Studio and shareable Skills, CapCut's own Seedance 2.0, 2.0 Mini and 2.5 video models (2.5 clips up to 30 seconds with up to 50 references), Seedream images and Seed Audio, third-party models CapCut lists (Veo 3, Sora 2, Kling, Nano Banana Pro and others), auto captions, AutoCut, voice filters and text to speech, with visible AI labels, invisible watermarks and C2PA Content Credentials. Held back by premium AI that runs on credits (Pro's 1,200 a month covers Seedance 2.0 Mini up to 240 seconds at 720p), only a few free uses per tool, tools that roll out by region and app version, no AI image generation in the mobile app, Ultra's exclusive features not named, and an AI-safety article that makes no statement on whether user content trains CapCut's models.
A Trust Center published in 2025, a privacy team in the US, the EEA and Singapore, Download Your Data and account deletion from settings, privacy requests under the user's regional law, moderation with in-app notices and appeals reviewed by a different moderator, and AI content labels with C2PA. Held back by security claims ('advanced encryption, secure servers and regular security audits') with no certification named, no refunds as a rule (appeals only for cases such as double billing), failed renewals that are retried and can look like a double charge, Pro blocked for accounts created in China, India or Russia and in Pro-restricted IP regions, features that move from free to Pro after launch (Auto Reframe, BCD Studio music), and assets removed for paying members too.
A large help center at capcut.com/help with many dated articles split by Mobile, Desktop and Web (credit types and order, export limits, subtitle import, Teams purchase and seats, cancellation and refunds), a newsroom with dated model launches, a Trust Center and hundreds of tool pages. Held back by help pages still giving the old Pro allowance (100 GB, 480 or 550 credits), pages that disagree with one another, tool pages promising 8K exports or free 1080p-to-8K, '1 GB' or '5 GB' free storage (new spaces get 0 GB since 25 Mar 2026), and a pricing page that gives no regular yearly price.
Ratings split sharply by platform: App Store US 4.6 from about 1.1 million ratings, Google Play 3.5 from about 13.1 million reviews, and Trustpilot 1.2 from 1,364 reviews. Trustpilot collects mostly unhappy customers, so it is a map of complaints, not a trend. Axis score 3.6: the mean of each platform's displayed rating with at least 30 reviews, app stores included, weighted by review count (4.6, 3.5 and 1.2 = 3.585, rounded).
Weighted across the axes above (weights reflect what actually drives the decision in this category). How we score →
Read the store ratings and Trustpilot separately. Trustpilot draws mostly unhappy customers, so we treat it as a map of complaints rather than a trend.
The right alternative depends on what CapCut lacks for you. Descript edits video by transcript in a desktop app and a browser but has no mobile editing app. VEED is a browser editor with iOS and Android apps on one account, priced per editor seat. Canva is design-first and also edits video. Clipchamp's free plan exports without a watermark up to 1080p, and DaVinci Resolve's free version handles 8-bit formats up to Ultra HD at 60 fps on Mac, Windows and Linux. Our CapCut alternatives guide compares them.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free trial of CapCut Pro?+
A 7-day Pro trial exists in selected regions for new users who never had Pro. The web trial needs a payment method and charges when it ends. Windows users who never had Pro may get a 7-day trial on PC; it converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before it ends, so check the billing period shown at checkout.
Does CapCut offer free Pro for students?+
Only through Creative Campus partner universities in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan. Help also mentions student discounts on the web where applicable, without a figure.
What export formats and resolutions does CapCut support?+
CapCut exports MP4 and MOV. CapCut Desktop goes up to 4K at 60 fps with Pro and needs Windows 10 64-bit or macOS 12+ for 4K; on mobile, 2K and 4K depend on the device, source, region and app version.
How many languages do CapCut auto captions support?+
CapCut lists 20+ languages and one-click bilingual captions. Help recommends about 15 minutes of video per recognition, and auto captions export only as SRT or TXT.
The bottom line
CapCut gives a small team a capable editor for nothing and a clear upgrade path, which is where our score gives it credit, though commercial limits keep it below the other video tools we score. Its weak points are commercial rather than creative: prices confirmed only after sign-in, credits that expire and a refund rule that rarely bends. Start on Free, pick one login method, check for Pro icons before every export, and pay for Pro only when you need 4K on Desktop, premium assets or monthly AI credits. Look elsewhere if you trade project files.
