What CapCut Desktop gives you, and where Pro starts
CapCut Desktop is CapCut's video editor for Windows and macOS, and the download costs nothing. The free plan covers the editor, free templates and basic tools. The top export setting, 4K (3840×2160) at 60 fps, is a Pro feature: for non-Pro users the desktop export dialog locks 4K, 60 fps and the No Watermark option. The app also carries tools the web editor lacks, such as Auto Cut and Lip Sync. Its gaps are just as specific. There is no template search and no TikTok linking. Edit here; browse templates on your phone.
CapCut's help calls the desktop app the most stable platform for long or high-resolution exports, because rendering runs on your own machine. That is the reason to install it. Watermarks follow a simple rule. CapCut says it adds none of its own; marks come from the ending clip that templates append, which you can delete, and from any Pro-marked asset. A video built from free assets in the standard editor exports clean.
Install, sign in and keep your projects safe
Download the installer from CapCut's official site; updates come from the same site or the Update button at the top right of the app. Installing a newer version over the current one keeps your projects, but needs 1 to 2 GB of free disk space. Never uninstall mid-update. CapCut warns that this can lose local projects that have not synced. It also cannot supply older installers, and outdated builds may stop working with login and cloud services.
Two features set clear hardware floors. Auto Cut needs CapCut Desktop 5.0 or newer on Windows 10 (64-bit) or macOS 11 Big Sur and later. 4K export needs Windows 10 (64-bit) or macOS 12 Monterey and later, plus enough GPU, CPU and storage. For heavy Pro tools such as AI background removal and 4K export, the help center recommends at least 4 GB of RAM. Weak hardware will lag.
Sign-in on desktop works with Google, TikTok, Facebook or a QR code; phone-number login is not offered. Log in on your phone first, then scan the QR code on the PC, so projects and drafts sync to one account. That matters because each login method creates a separate account, even with the same email. A purchase on one stays there. Projects created while logged out may stay local only; the Cloud and Local views show where each project lives.
Sign in on the mobile app, then scan the QR code on the PC, so both use one account. Each login method (Google, TikTok, Facebook) is a separate account with its own subscription.
The tools that live on the desktop
Auto Cut trims and syncs clips to music beats, speech pauses or a text prompt, and it runs on Mobile and Desktop but not on CapCut Web [1]. On desktop it needs an internet connection, because the AI processing happens in the cloud. Auto Cut is rolling out by region, so some modes may not appear on your account yet. Lip Sync sits under Video, then Basic, and wants a clear face video plus an audio track. It may reach your account later depending on region or version.
Precision work is where desktop pulls ahead. Arrow keys nudge layers by 1 pixel, the canvas zooms to 400 percent, and you can save custom effect presets with blend mode and opacity. Captions get shortcuts: Ctrl or Cmd selects scattered lines, Shift selects a range, and Ctrl+B or Cmd+B splits a subtitle. SRT or TXT subtitle files import through Captions, then Add Captions, and should be UTF-8. In some regions, desktop also downloads local speech-recognition language packs.
AI Design, CapCut's image generator, needs Desktop 7.7.0 or later; as of December 2025 the mobile app has no AI image generation. Desktop offers Standard (1024×1024), High (1536×1536) and Max (2048×2048) presets, Max in select regions only. CapCut's blog says Desktop supports video generation with Seedance 2.5, which CapCut's US pricing page lists only on its paid plans (Pro, Ultra and Teams). Credit visibility is thin. Desktop 6.0 and later shows your balance only before an AI action, with no credit types or expiry dates. Image import has no hard count limit, up to 200 MB per image.
Exporting 4K at 60 fps without stalls
The export panel offers 1080p, 2K (2560×1440) and 4K (3840×2160), 30 or 60 fps, and a custom bit rate, in MP4 or MOV. You reach 4K at 60 fps only when the source supports it, and only on Pro. Rendering is local, so time depends on your hardware: CapCut's help says a five-minute 4K video can take 10 minutes or more [2]. Keep 2 to 3 GB free on the export drive. Avoid system root folders and Program Files. Exports there fail.
When an export stalls or looks wrong, check Settings, then Performance. Proxy speeds up the preview but makes it differ from the final file; turn it off to see the real result. The same panel disables hardware encoding, the first fix for exports that hang at the start. Dropping to 1080p or lowering the frame rate also helps. CapCut names low RAM, outdated GPU drivers, full disks and background apps as the usual causes. AI Ultra HD export is different: it runs on CapCut's servers and can queue.
Pro assets lock exports the same way everywhere. A premium template, effect, transition or BCD Studio track blocks a watermark-free export until you subscribe or remove it, and a paid template shows a lock icon beside the resolution options. If Pro lapses, drafts stay editable, but the ones with paid materials cannot be exported. Swap them for free elements first. Your draft survives either way.
Proxy, under Settings then Performance, speeds up the preview but makes it differ from the export. Switch it off to see the real result.
What the desktop app can't do
Templates and TikTok stay on the phone
Desktop has no template search. It shows a small set of preloaded official templates and cannot browse the community gallery, open TikTok templates or paste template links. New templates arrive mobile first and reach desktop weeks or months later, or never. Paid templates cannot be bought here, though ones you already own work through synced projects. You cannot post remakes either; desktop exports save locally only. TikTok anchor-point templates work only partially, when launched from TikTok Web.
TikTok linking and direct posting are mobile-only, and desktop cannot reach TikTok's official sound library, so music added here can be muted after upload. Export an MP4 with AAC audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz and upload it yourself. The Teleprompter, Auto Lyrics and profile-picture changes are mobile-only too. Password resets happen on CapCut Web. Caption emoji can also vanish after you save or reopen a desktop project, so CapCut suggests emoji-style stickers instead. Plan around that.
When another editor fits better
If you cannot install software, the browser editor covers the same timeline with cloud rendering; our CapCut Online guide explains its export rules. DaVinci Resolve's free version handles 8-bit formats up to Ultra HD 3840×2160 at 60 fps, adds multi-user collaboration and HDR grading, and runs on Mac, Windows and Linux; its Studio edition is a one-time purchase. Clipchamp's free plan exports unlimited videos up to 1080p without a watermark, from the browser or a Windows app. Filmora's free version watermarks exports, but it imports XML timelines. CapCut exchanges only rendered video with other editors.
Paying for Pro and Teams
CapCut's US pricing page lists Free at $0, Pro at $19.99 a month billed monthly per account with 1,200 monthly AI credits and 1 TB of storage, Ultra at $79 a month billed monthly per account with 8,645 monthly credits, and Teams at $12.49 per seat a month billed monthly for the default 2 seats [3]. The page marks these figures as reference only, and the price after sign-in can differ by region, device and promotion, as our CapCut pricing guide explains. By our arithmetic, twelve monthly Pro payments come to $239.88 a year billed monthly. CapCut's US pricing page also has a Yearly tab, but like the monthly figures it is labelled reference-only and CapCut runs time-limited yearly offers, so we don't quote a yearly price; check the Yearly tab after you sign in.
Pro is not paid inside the app. Clicking Join opens CapCut Web in your browser, and your Pro status can take 2 to 5 minutes to sync back to the desktop app. Pro bought on any platform works on desktop. CapCut says the desktop Pro price can be higher than on mobile, on purpose, so read the payment page before you confirm. Extra AI credits are bought on CapCut Web too; the desktop Buy more button sends you there. CapCut has run seasonal offers that appear only in the desktop app, so open Pro from the desktop app and compare the price on the payment page before you confirm.
Only the Team Owner can buy Teams [4]. You manage the team from CapCut Online or Desktop, not the mobile app, and desktop checks team access online at launch. A desktop referral also exists: each invited new PC user earns you 7 free Pro days, up to 10 friends.
Windows users who never had Pro may get a 7-day Pro trial. It converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends, so check the billing period shown at checkout before you confirm.
Frequently asked questions
Can CapCut Desktop open a Premiere Pro project?+
No. CapCut cannot import or export project files from third-party editors such as Premiere Pro (.prproj); export a rendered video (MP4, MOV or AVI) and import that instead.
Where does CapCut Desktop save exported videos?+
By default in the system Videos folder or a CapCut folder. The Open folder button at the bottom left of the export page takes you straight to the file.
Which image formats does CapCut Desktop import?+
JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP and HEIC (HEIC on macOS only); RAW files are not supported. CapCut also advises against importing directly from external drives or cloud-synced folders.
Can I go back to an older version of CapCut Desktop?+
No. CapCut says it cannot provide installers for older desktop versions, and outdated builds may be disabled or lose login and cloud features.
The bottom line
Install CapCut Desktop if you edit longer videos, need frame-accurate control or want 4K at 60 fps, and budget for Pro if that last one matters. The free plan is a working editor with basic tools that exports clean videos from free assets. Keep the phone app for templates, TikTok posting and the Teleprompter, and use CapCut Web for Pro payments, credits and password fixes. Sign in the same way on every device, and the three surfaces behave like one account.
