The short answer: safe to install, generous with your data
CapCut is safe to install when you get it from the official website, the App Store or Google Play; CapCut's own help center warns against modded APKs and cracked or premium-for-free builds.[1] The bigger question is data. The CapCut US Privacy Policy, last updated April 15, 2026, lets CapCut analyze what you upload, use your information to train machine-learning models and share data for targeted advertising. It lists no opt-out for model training. For everyday social and marketing videos, many people will accept that trade. For confidential footage, it is not.
CapCut says it published a Trust Center in 2025, keeps a global privacy team with experts in the US, the EEA and Singapore, and protects data with advanced encryption, secure servers and regular security audits. The privacy page that makes these claims names no independent certification behind them. Its help center says desktop updates should come from the official website or the in-app Update button, and mobile updates from the App Store or Google Play. A modded build is not the app these documents describe, so none of their commitments can be assumed for it.
Get CapCut from capcut.com, the App Store or Google Play, and update desktop builds from the in-app Update button. CapCut warns against modded and cracked versions.
Who runs CapCut for US users, and what it collects
Two documents name two different companies. The US Privacy Policy (April 15, 2026) says CapCut's services for US users, covering the app, desktop software, CapCut Web, Pippit and CapCut Commerce Pro, are operated by TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, with a mailing address in Culver City, California.[2] The Terms of Service served at capcut.com, last updated June 9, 2020, name Bytedance Pte. Ltd. as the company you contract with. We report both as written. Neither document explains how the two relate.
The collection list is broad. Under the same policy, CapCut analyzes the content of your videos, images and audio, including the text of spoken words, which features such as auto captions rely on. The policy also says it may collect your content, AI prompts and AI responses included, as you create, import or upload it, even if you never save or publish it. It receives data about your activity on other websites and apps from advertisers and analytics partners. CapCut says it does not sell personal data for money but shares it for cross-context targeted advertising, and with service providers and TT Commerce and Global Services LLC and affiliates, within categories the policy calls consistent with Executive Order 14352.
The policy does not say in which countries your data is stored or processed. If data residency is a procurement requirement, that silence belongs in your vendor review as an open item. Ads add a separate layer. CapCut's ads article, written for the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, says it runs no ad-serving system of its own, uses third-party ad network SDKs and shows personalized ads only to consenting users over 18. For the US it points back to the Privacy Policy, so do not read the 18+ rule as a US promise.
Your videos, the content license and AI training
CapCut's legal page says the content you create belongs to you and that CapCut does not use your content or likeness commercially without your consent. When you share content on the platform, other CapCut users get limited rights to download, repost and collaborate on it. The Terms' US supplement grants a wider license than that page suggests: a nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, transferable and sublicensable license to use, host, reproduce and display your content.[3] You also promise you hold the rights to everything you upload.
On AI training, the documents say different things in different places. CapCut's Trustworthy AI page says its models were trained on publicly available information, proprietary datasets and synthetic data, which in some cases may include personal information about individuals.[4] The help article on AI safety makes no statement either way about training on user content. The US Privacy Policy is broader: it lists training, testing and improving machine-learning models among the uses of user information, with no opt-out for that use. Assume uploads can feed model work.
CapCut's own advice fits that reading. It tells users not to upload government IDs, financial or medical records, confidential work material or children's personal data to its AI features, and says using an AI feature does not by itself make a video public. Legal exposure matters too. The 2020 Terms make your license to the service personal and non-commercial and license no music rights. Our CapCut for business guide covers those rules for ads and brand work.
The US Privacy Policy (April 15, 2026) lists training machine-learning models among the uses of user information and offers no opt-out for that use.
The controls you do have
You can download your personal data with the Download Your Data tool, in JSON or TXT format, while projects and media leave through the normal Export function. Account and data deletion is available at any time from account settings, though CapCut says some information may be kept briefly for legal or operational reasons. CapCut's privacy page points to a request form. The US Privacy Policy also lets US users ask to know, access, correct or delete their data, and appeal a decision, by email or by mail to its Culver City address. Download first, then delete.
Ad sharing has its own switch. The US Privacy Policy lets you opt out of the sale or sharing of your data for targeted ads under Your Privacy Choices in the mobile app settings, or with the Global Privacy Control signal, which covers only the browser where you turn it on. It lists no such opt-out for model training. Set both on every device you use, because the browser signal does not follow you to the app.
Moderation combines automated tools with human moderators and covers templates, comments and AI-generated content. CapCut says it sends an in-app notice for every action on your content, and an appeal goes to a different moderator. For AI output, it adds visible AI labels, invisible watermarks and C2PA Content Credentials, and a tool on its website identifies media made with CapCut AI. Prompts that break its policies are blocked, and at the Seedance 2.0 launch CapCut restricted videos made from real faces. Expect clients to spot AI clips.
Use Download Your Data (JSON or TXT) and export your projects first; account deletion is available any time from settings.
Age rules, teens and families
The 2020 Terms set the floor at 13 and require a parent's or legal guardian's consent for users under 18; the US Privacy Policy adds that CapCut is not directed at children under 13. The help center says the login age is typically 13, rising to 16 in some regions such as the EU and South Korea. On web and desktop, CapCut does not ask your age itself. It inherits the birth date from the account you sign in with and checks it in real time.
Age checks have teeth. An account flagged as under age is scheduled for deletion, with a data download link offered first, and appeals can only be filed in the mobile app; an unsuccessful appeal means permanent deletion. A false birth date breaks the Terms and can get an account closed for good. After a failed age appeal, CapCut automatically refunds purchases not made through Apple within 7 days after the appeal deadline. App Store purchases have to be refunded by Apple through Report a Problem. Otherwise CapCut generally gives no refunds, as our guide on how to cancel CapCut explains.
What the fine print settles, and what it leaves open
Under the Terms' US supplement, disputes start with an attempt at informal resolution, then go to binding arbitration with the American Arbitration Association in Los Angeles. Jury trials and class actions are waived, and small-claims court stays available. Individuals can opt out of arbitration by emailing capcut.support@bytedance.com within 30 days of first using CapCut. Mark the date. After that window, the arbitration route applies to you as written, so decide early rather than after a dispute.
Some questions have no answer in the sources, and we would rather say so than fill the gap. The pages we read name no security certification behind CapCut's encryption and audit claims. The US Privacy Policy does not say where data is stored or processed. The AI-safety help article does not say whether your own uploads train models, while the policy lists model training as a use without an opt-out. And the Terms as served still carry a 2020 date and a different company name from the 2026 policy. Treat each gap as unknown.
Frequently asked questions
How many devices can one CapCut account use at once?+
CapCut says one account works on up to 5 devices at the same time, and the subscription is tied to the account, not the device.
Is signing in with TikTok the same CapCut account as signing in with Google?+
No. CapCut treats each login method (Google, email, TikTok, Facebook, Apple ID, phone number in the US) as a separate account, even with the same email, so a subscription bought on one does not appear on another.
Can CapCut remove music or effects from my saved projects?+
Yes. CapCut can remove low-use AI effects, seasonal templates and licensed music without notice, and removed music disappears even from saved projects, so export finished videos promptly.
The bottom line
CapCut is safe software when it comes from official sources, and its US documents are clear about the cost: content analysis that includes your audio, a perpetual license on what you upload, model training without an opt-out and data shared for targeted ads, which you can opt out of. That suits everyday social and marketing video. It does not suit footage you are contractually bound to protect. Read the April 15, 2026 Privacy Policy yourself, keep sensitive material out of the AI features, and decide on the arbitration opt-out within your first 30 days.
