The short answer
Ubersuggest and Ahrefs both start at $29 a month, and that is where the resemblance ends [1] [2]. Ahrefs crawls its own web index, sells an API and charges more as you grow. Ubersuggest rents its backlink data from Moz, has no API and stays cheap at every tier. For most small sites, Ubersuggest gives more for less: more tracked keywords, more seats and more AI prompts per dollar. For backlink work, large sites and anyone who needs an API, Ahrefs is the right tool, at a much higher price. Both track rankings weekly. Different tools, same entry price.
Who each tool is built for
Ubersuggest aims at solo owners, small businesses and budget agencies who want guided SEO and AI tracking for one to fifteen sites. Ahrefs aims at SEO professionals and teams who need deep backlink and keyword data, with plans from personal projects up to enterprise. The overlap is the beginner, and Ahrefs Starter courts exactly that buyer at the same $29 price. So the useful question is not which tool is better in the abstract. It is whether you need Ahrefs' own data badly enough to keep paying for it as your team, your site list and your keyword count grow.
Ubersuggest sells extra users at $5 a month, Ahrefs at $40 or $60. Seats and projects, not the entry price, decide which tool is cheaper for a team.
What you pay: plans, billing and seats
| Tier | Ubersuggest | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Individual $29/mo | Starter $29/mo |
| Next | Business $49/mo | Lite $129/mo |
| Team | Enterprise/Agency $99/mo | Standard $249/mo |
| Top self-serve | n/a | Advanced $449/mo |
The $29 tier is not a tie
Above entry, Ahrefs costs about two and a half times as much per tier, by our arithmetic from both pricing pages. At entry the prices match, but the plans do not. Ubersuggest Individual gives one project, 150 searches a day, 125 tracked keywords, a 1,000-page audit and AI tracking for 10 prompts. Ahrefs Starter runs on credits, with limited access to Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker, and tracks 50 keywords. Ubersuggest gives the bigger allowance; Ahrefs gives you Ahrefs data. And Ahrefs writes that "Asides from the Starter plan, all other paid plans can be purchased monthly or annually" [3].
So Starter costs $348 a year at best, while Ubersuggest Individual costs $192 billed yearly, a $156 gap in Ubersuggest's favor. Small, but real. Ahrefs advertises savings of up to 17% for paying annually on its other plans, and Lite costs $1,290 a year against $1,548 in monthly payments. Ubersuggest's yearly plans save about 44.7% on every tier, a discount more than twice as deep. It also sells Lifetime plans at $290, $490 and $990, paid once, with cut AI limits, lasting while the product exists, at the owner's discretion. Ahrefs sells nothing similar and says it never runs discounts.
Seats and projects, where the gap is widest
Ubersuggest includes 1, 2 or 5 users and sells extra users at $5 a month with no cap. Ahrefs includes one user on Lite, Standard and Advanced and sells the rest: $40 a month on Lite, for up to 2 more, and $60 on Standard, for up to 5 more. A five-person team on Ubersuggest Enterprise pays $99 a month. On Ahrefs Standard, the same five people cost $249 plus four seats at $60, or $489 a month. Nearly five times as much. Count heads before you compare anything else.
Projects tell a similar story. Ubersuggest offers 1, 7 or 15 projects; Ahrefs offers 5 on Lite, 20 on Standard and 50 on Advanced. For an agency with 20 clients, Ahrefs Standard fits at $249, while Ubersuggest needs Enterprise plus five $5 project add-ons, or $124 a month. That is half the Ahrefs price, with weekly AI tracking and Moz link data instead of Ahrefs' index. Lite at $129 adds 5 projects, 6 months of historical data, 750 tracked keywords, 5 tracked AI prompts, 100,000 crawl credits, and API and MCP access. Ahrefs buys depth. Ubersuggest buys breadth.
Credits run underneath both. Ubersuggest gives 250, 500 or 1,000 monthly credits for data refreshes and AI articles. Ahrefs Starter runs on credits, Lite gives 1,000 credits per user, and Standard is unlimited. On Ubersuggest Individual, two full Content Studio articles would use 200 of the month's 250 credits, leaving 50 for keyword refreshes, so writers who plan to draft inside the tool should price Business, with 500 credits, instead.
Starter cannot be bought annually and has no MCP or API, so it costs $348 a year at best. MCP and the API start at Lite, $129 a month.
What it costs for three real buyers
A solo blogger with one site, 100 keywords and weekly checks pays $192 a year for Ubersuggest Individual, which tracks 125 keywords. Ahrefs Starter costs $348 a year in monthly payments and tracks 50, fewer than this blogger needs. Ubersuggest is $156 cheaper and tracks more. Easy call. A freelancer with five sites, 500 keywords and no staff pays $49 a month for Ubersuggest Business. Ahrefs Lite costs $129 with 5 projects and 750 keywords, which is $960 a year more on monthly billing. Ahrefs adds the API and its own backlink index for that money, so decide what those are worth to your clients.
A small agency with fifteen clients and four people fits Ubersuggest Enterprise at $99 a month. Ahrefs Standard, with 20 projects and three extra seats, costs $249 plus $180, or $429 a month. Over a year that is $1,188 against $5,148 on monthly billing, so Ubersuggest saves $3,960. What the agency buys on Ahrefs with the difference is data depth: its own link index, a far larger keyword database, more crawl volume and an API for dashboards and scripts. For many small agencies that is worth less than the saving. For link-building shops, it is the job.
Keyword research and rank tracking
Ubersuggest gives volume, CPC, difficulty and intent, plus five expansion tabs and AI Prompt Ideas, and it claims a 2.2B+ keyword database. Ahrefs claims 29B keywords filtered, about 13 times larger on the vendors' own figures, though neither figure is dated, and Starter users get only limited access to Keywords Explorer. For niche or non-English markets, the larger database usually matters more. Ahrefs goes deeper; Ubersuggest explains more. Difficulty scales differ between tools, so do not compare their numbers directly. For bulk work, Ubersuggest's 50-keyword cap on Individual is the tightest limit on either side.
Both estimate competitor traffic, top pages and keywords. Ubersuggest rebuilds its estimates monthly from Google data, and the rebuild can take up to six days, leaving the newest month empty at first, so schedule monthly reports after the seventh. Ahrefs builds its estimates from its own crawl and keyword data, with 16 years of history in its index. Treat both as estimates. Connect Search Console for the truth.
Weekly rankings on both
Ubersuggest's help center says daily updates are no longer available, and Ahrefs' pricing table lists Rank Tracker updates as weekly on every plan. This is a shared limit, not a differentiator. A keyword that drops on a Tuesday may not show the loss until the following week's run, so neither tool suits watching a launch, a migration or a core update day by day. Ubersuggest's status page says the team is exploring a return of daily tracking, even though its home page still promises it. Trust the help center. If daily matters, look at SE Ranking or Serpstat.
For local work, Ubersuggest tracks desktop and mobile on paid plans, with 20 locations on Individual and unlimited above. Ahrefs Starter tracks keyword movements across 190+ locations on mobile and desktop, and Ahrefs covers 217 locations in total. On Enterprise, Ubersuggest adds Pixel Rank Tracking, still in beta, which measures how far down the page a listing sits, so ads and AI blocks show up as lost visibility. We found no equivalent on the Ahrefs pages we read. A niche advantage.
Backlinks: the core difference
Ubersuggest is plain about its source: "Our backlinks data is sourced exclusively from the MOZ API" [4]. Ahrefs runs its own crawler and describes its index as the world's largest index of live backlinks, claiming 35T external backlinks in history and 494B pages. Even Ubersuggest's own comparison page credits Ahrefs with an extensive backlink index. Ubersuggest publishes no backlink total; its reports show 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 rows by plan. For link audits, outreach at scale or competitive link research, Ahrefs is the stronger tool. That is its reputation for a reason.
History runs the other way. Ubersuggest keeps 3 years of link history and shows new and lost links over 30 days. Ahrefs keeps 6 months, 2 years or 5 years of historical data on Lite, Standard and Advanced, so only Advanced reaches further back than Ubersuggest. Ubersuggest Individual keeps three years for $29, while Ahrefs Lite keeps six months for $129. For prospecting, Ubersuggest's Backlink Opportunities lists sites linking to rivals but not to you, which is enough for small campaigns, while Ahrefs' Link Intersect draws on a larger index. Neither sells a disavow workflow on the pages we read, and Ubersuggest has no toxic-link scoring.
Site audits and WordPress fixes
Ubersuggest audits 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 pages per project weekly. Ahrefs gives 100,000, 500,000 or 1.5M crawl credits a month on Lite, Standard and Advanced. Small sites fit both. Large sites fit Ahrefs. A 20,000-page store fits a single Ahrefs Lite project with credits to spare, while on Ubersuggest it would exceed even Enterprise's 10,000 pages per project, leaving half the catalog unchecked every week. Paid Ubersuggest users can recrawl on demand; free users cannot.
Where Ubersuggest pulls ahead is WordPress. Its plugin runs audits inside wp-admin, recrawls with a one-minute cooldown and applies AI fixes for titles, meta descriptions and H1s, and it is compatible with Yoast SEO and Rank Math. Each fix costs credits. We found no equivalent Ahrefs plugin on the pages we read, so for a WordPress owner who works in a fix-and-check loop, this is a practical edge.
Use Ubersuggest for tracking and AI work and Ahrefs Free for your own site's backlinks. Add Ahrefs Starter for a month only when a link audit is due.
AI visibility, MCP and the API
Ubersuggest includes AI Search Visibility on monthly and yearly plans, with 10 to 20 prompts per brand, refreshed monthly, every two weeks or weekly by plan. Ahrefs includes 5, 10 or 20 tracked AI prompts per account on Lite, Standard and Advanced, and sells Brand Radar separately. The counting unit matters. At $99, Ubersuggest Enterprise tracks 20 prompts across 15 brands, which is 300 prompts, against 5 on Ahrefs Lite at $129. Ubersuggest wins on count. Our Ubersuggest AI Search Visibility guide covers the feature in depth.
Ahrefs wins on coverage. Its Brand Radar page lists AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Ubersuggest names ChatGPT and Gemini on paid plans, plus Google AI Overview on Enterprise, and says Perplexity, Claude, Grok and Copilot are not tracked today. For research, Ubersuggest's AI Prompt Ideas lists 25 to 75 prompts per search by plan, while Brand Radar draws on 476M+ organic prompts. Ubersuggest also leans further into content, with Content Studio drafting full articles for 100 credits each.
MCP, chat apps and the API
Ubersuggest's MCP server exposes 42 tools and works on a free account, while Ahrefs' MCP server is available on Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise. So the cheapest way to query SEO data from Claude or Cursor is a free Ubersuggest account; the cheapest Ahrefs route costs $129. Ubersuggest also has an official ChatGPT app and a Claude plugin with nine skills and a background strategist agent. For people who work in chat, it is the easier start.
The API is a different matter. Ubersuggest has no API or webhooks. Ahrefs includes API access from Lite and lets you try endpoints with free test queries. Any dashboard, script or data pipeline needs Ahrefs here. This is not close, and it is the single feature that settles the choice for technical teams before price even enters the conversation.
Free plans, trials and the fine print
Ubersuggest's free account works on any domain, at 3 reports a day and 25 tracked keywords. Ahrefs Free gives site owners limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for their own sites. Ubersuggest's free tier is broader; Ahrefs' is deeper on your own site. Ubersuggest also offers a 7-day trial on monthly plans, card required, and you should cancel by day six. Ahrefs answers the free-trial question by pointing website owners to Ahrefs Free. Only Ubersuggest lets you test a paid plan.
That matters because both are strict on money. Ubersuggest's fees are non-refundable after the free trial, and Ahrefs says it has no obligation to provide refunds beyond what the law requires. Testing first is the only real protection. Ubersuggest cancels in Account & Billing and later deletes rankings except the oldest project with 25 keywords; Ahrefs cancels from Account Settings and drops you to Ahrefs Free. Export before leaving either. Ubersuggest's terms follow California law with arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act, while Ahrefs' US terms follow the laws of Singapore. Ubersuggest holds no public SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification, so enterprise buyers should ask both vendors for security documentation.
Support, training and what users say
Ubersuggest includes email support on paid plans, a 20-hour SEO course with templates and monthly live Q&A sessions. Ahrefs offers Academy, with free video courses open to everyone. Neither lists phone support on the pages we read. Both teach well, but Ahrefs' courses cost nothing even if you never buy a plan, which makes them a useful resource whichever tool you end up paying for.
The two tools split the review platforms. Ahrefs leads on the software review sites, while Ubersuggest leads clearly on Trustpilot. In our samples, a fifth of Ubersuggest's latest 100 reviews were one-star, while Ahrefs' sample was mostly one-star, with credits and billing the common themes, and 25 of those 100 Ahrefs reviews mention support, mostly in complaints. Billing anger drives both. Our own composite score puts Ahrefs a little ahead on capability and integrations, with Ubersuggest higher on value for money and AI access per dollar. That gap is narrower than the price gap.
Which one to pick
Ubersuggest wins on price above entry, on seats at $5 each, on AI assistant access with a free account, on AI prompts per dollar, on WordPress fixes and on trial access to a paid plan. Ahrefs wins on backlink data from its own index, on keyword database size, on API access and on crawl volume for large sites. You can also use both: Ubersuggest for tracking and AI work plus Ahrefs Free for your own site's backlinks, which costs Ubersuggest's price alone. Add Ahrefs Starter for a month when a link audit is due.
A week is enough to test the pair. Start the Ubersuggest trial and Ahrefs Free on day one, compare your backlinks on day two, connect Ubersuggest to Claude on day three, and cancel or keep Ubersuggest by day six. Then decide whether Ahrefs Starter is worth a month. Ask Ubersuggest which AI engines your plan tracks, and ask Ahrefs what Starter's credit limits cover. For the full plan math, see our Ubersuggest pricing guide and Ahrefs pricing guide.
